TATLOCK MAKES THREE;
MOCCASIN OUTFIELDER BECOMES THIRD
RECENT
GRADUATE TO SIGN PRO CONTRACT
The list of former Florida
Southern softball players in National Pro
Fastpitch grew to three when Michelle Tatlock
became a member of the Philadelphia Force. The
2008 graduate was a four-year starting
outfielder for the Moccasins, helping them win
three SSC titles and two South Region titles
during her career.Tatlock
played and started 214 games at Florida
Southern, hitting .304 with seven home runs, 104
RBI and 40 stolen bases. She also graduated as
one of the top postseason performers in team
history, with a .323 career batting average in
the NCAA Tournament to rank fifth on the Mocs'
all-time list. Her 13 postseason RBI are third
in team history.Seven of
those RBI came during the 2006 South Region
Tournament, earning her a spot on the
all-tournament team and helping the Mocs advance
to the Division II national tournament. She
again came up big in Salem, Virginia by driving in the
winning run with a two-out single in the 11th
inning to beat Emporia State 1-0, and send FSC
into the national semifinals. Tatlock also went
four-for-10 with two RBI at the 2007 national
tournament.During her senior
year, Tatlock hit a career-high .331 out of the
#2 spot in the batting order, drove in 18 runs
and stole 18 bases in 19 attempts. She also
hit .338 in the Mocs' 20 games against teams
that qualified for the NCAA Tournament, the best
average on the team.Tatlock
joins two other former Moccasins now playing at
the professional level. 2007 graduates Megan
Brown (Rockford Thunder) and Leah English
(Washington Glory) are also playing NPF softball
this summer. As of June 10, Florida Southern had
produced three of the five Division II players
on NPF rosters. The other two came from St.
Edward's (TX) and Florida Gulf Coast. Division
III power St. Thomas (MN) also had an alum
playing at the professional level.
ANOTHER ONE GOES PRO: LEAH
ENGLISH JOINS
WASHINGTON GLORY IN NATIONAL PRO FASTPITCH
For the second time in as
many weeks, a former Florida Southern softball
player has signed a professional contract to
play the 2008 season in National Pro Fastpitch.
Leah English, Florida Southern's starting
catcher from 2005-07, has signed with the
defending league champion Washington Glory,
joining pitcher Megan Brown of the Rockford
Thunder as former Moccasins now in the pros.
English came to Florida Southern as a junior
college transfer in the spring of 2005 and
started all but three games behind the plate
over the next three years. She hit .314 during
that time with a .411 on-base percentage, 30
doubles, four triples, nine home runs and 91
RBI. She also stole 10 bases in 10 attempts.
A two-time All-South Region selection and a 2007
Academic All-American, English also stood out
defensively for the Moccasins. As a senior, she
was second in the country in throwing out
runners attempting to steal (53 percent), and
had a .995 career fielding percentage. Her
biggest moment though came in the 2007 South
Region Championship Game when her three-run
homer gave the Mocs a 3-0 win over Florida Gulf
Coast, the only postseason walk-off home run in
team history.English is
joining a team that went 34-10 last year and won
the NPF league championship. The Glory's season
begins on May 29, and English and Brown have a
chance to go head-to-head one week later when
Washington visits Rockford for a four-game
series.
FORMER MOCCASIN PITCHER
SIGNS WITH ROCKFORD THUNDER
Former Florida Southern
pitcher Megan Brown signed a contract May 15
with the Rockford Thunder of National Pro Fastpitch.
Brown played for the Moccasins from 2004-07 and
was a three-time All-American. She holds school
career records for wins (124), earned run
average (0.69) and strikeouts (997). Her win
total is currently third in NCAA Division II
history, and she also finished her career with
12 no-hitters and 20 postseason wins.
The native of Carrollton, Georgia was more than
a pitcher for the Moccasins, twice earning
Academic All-American honors as well. In 2007,
she was both the Sunshine State Conference
Female Athlete-of-the-Year and the
Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year before earning a
post-graduate scholarship from the NCAA. It
added to a long list of awards that included
three-time SSC Pitcher-of-the-Year (the only one
in league history), two-time MVP of the South
Region Tournament, and two selections to the
all-tournament team at the Division II national
finals.Brown is
currently one of four pitchers on the Rockford roster,
though Cat Osterman is expected to remain with the
United States Olympic Team through the season. That
leaves Serena Settlemier as the only returning starting
pitcher for the Thunder. Settlemier also plays first
base and had a 10-8 record in 2007.
Rockford finished last season with a record of 24-20
good for fourth place in the NPF standings. The Thunder
qualified for the playoffs and advanced to the league
championship game where they lost to the Washington
Glory, 3-1.The regular season begins
May 29 and runs through August 17.
