RSS Anderson leads No. 13 Memphis over UMassby The Republican Sports DeskTuesday November 18, 2008, 6:37 AM (AP Photo/Lance Murphey)Memphis guard Wesley Witherspoon, back, blocks a shot by Massachusetts guard Gary Correia over Massachusetts teammate Tony Gaffney (24) and Memphis guard Antonio Anderson in the second half of a college basketball game Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, in Memphis, Tenn. Memphis won 80-58. MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Antonio Anderson had 15 points and a career-high 12 rebounds and No. 13 Memphis shook off a poor shooting performance to beat Massachusetts 80-58 on Monday night.Freshman Tyreke Evans had 19 points and Robert Dozier added 18 for the Tigers, who were limited to 39 percent shooting for the game, including 2-of-19 outside the arc. It marked the second straight game where Evans, one of last season's prized recruits, has led the Tigers (2-0) in scoring. Evans keyed a first-half rally that put the Tigers up for good.Ricky Harris led the Minutemen (1-2) with 17 points, while Tony Gaffney scored 16 points and grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds.Continue reading "Anderson leads No. 13 Memphis over UMass" » Post a comment | View comments (0) Live Blog: UMass at Memphisby Jeffrey R. LarnardTuesday November 18, 2008, 12:18 AMEnd of Game -- Memphis 80 - UMass 58The loss of Luke Bonner was certainly felt today by the Minutemen as gave up 50 points in the paint with the lack of another big body down low. UMass was clearly over matched by Memphis but still showed that they have the potential to compete with some of the top schools in the nation. They also did it in the national spotlight which never hurts either.UMass 74 - Memphis 49 3:41 left in second half -- The 13-point lead has grown to 25 as Memphis has begun to run away with this one. Gaffney has continued to be a force in the second half and now has 14 points, 19 rebounds, three steals and four blocks. UMass 40 - Memphis 53 11:39 left in second half -- Memphis is out to its biggest lead so far, 13. Memphis has gotten another eight points off of turnovers to bring the total to 27. For UMass Tony Gaffney has been the driving force behind them. Gaffney almost has a double-double with nine points and 13 rebounds.UMass 31 - Memphis 39 16:18 left in second half -- The turnovers have continued for UMass and prevented them from getting back in this game. Two more turnovers in this half for UMass and Memphis now has 19 points off of turnovers. UMass 25 - Memphis 33 End of first half -- Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. UMass has turned the ball over 15 times and allowed Memphis to take 11 more shots in the first half than the Minutemen. Memphis' play hasn't been pretty either. The Tigers have turned the ball over nine times but have also grabbed nine offensive rebounds and turned them into six points.Three's -- or lack of them -- have been huge in this game. Memphis is just 1-of-12 from behind the arc while UMass is 3-of-13. The only issue for UMass is the only player that can hit a three is Harris. Harris has 12 points to lead UMass and has hit 3-of-5 from three while the rest of the Minutemen have gone 0-for-8.UMass 16 - Memphis 24 4:58 left in first half -- Both teams have finally started scoring...somewhat. Ricky Harris hit a three to put UMass back on top 16-15 before Robert Dozier hit a jumper to bring Memphis back on top and give him 10 points so far. Harris leads the Minutemen with nine points. After Dozier put the Tigers on top, Memphis went on a 7-0 run to widen the gap.As sloppy as the game has been (12 turnovers by UMass, seven by Memphis), it's got plenty of action. Both teams play at a fast pace and don't hold onto the ball for long. A shot clock isn't even needed for this game.UMass 9 - Memphis 9 12:00 left in first half -- UMass was off to an early lead but not for long. Both teams are playing very sloppy from the start, especially behind the 3-point line. UMass is 1-of-5 from behind the arc, while Memphis is 0-for-5.It's a matchup of teacher and student as UMass and No. 12 Memphis face off. Derek Kellogg, former Memphis assistant coach will square of against John Calipari, his former coach when Kellogg played guard at UMass. Keep checking back here for updates throughout the game. "When I talked with coach (Derek) Kellogg, we didn't just talk about basketball or recruiting," Riley said. "We talked about regular stuff." Hill appeared in five games as a freshman. He played eight minutes, took four shots, made two and had one rebound. The Minutemen badly wanted a return trip to the NCAA tournament after making it to the College Cup last season."When you rely on a committee to make a desicion you're always nervous because you don't have control over it," Koch said. "I felt confident that we had a good shot, but I also know that anything can happen."It turned out these fears were unrealized as the committee recognized UMass (10-7-3) for its strong performance over the second half of the season, which including a nine-game unbeaten streak before the loss to Dayton. The Minutemen were granted a unseeded spot and will face Harvard (11-5-0) at Rudd Field on Nov. 22. They team is thrilled that it not only made the tournament, but will get to host the opening round match."To be able to play at home, where we feel comfortable on our home field is great," Koch said. "We have such a good group of fans that support us and we are excited to play in front of them." MurrayJohn Calipari and Donte Bright, 1996.It's the question of the day: Are you staying up for the game? For many UMass fans, a matchup against John Calipari is a dream game. Little did they suspect it might literally be a dream game — as in, a game experienced while in a dream state. With a midnight EST tip-off time, many of us may wake up Tuesday morning with muddled memories of the Minutemen's first game against the man who stewarded the program to its greatest heights during the 1990s. The whole thing might be a little bit hazy around the edges, the details somewhat cloudy.Continue reading "Dream game for UMass in the wee hours of the morning" » Post a comment | View comments (0) UMass signs top 100 recruitby Adam MillerMonday November 17, 2008, 2:02 PMThe Massachusetts men's basketball team announced the signing of Freddie Riley this afternoon prior to tonight's tip-off against Memphis.Riley is the second guard that UMass has signed this season after signing Javorn Farrell last week. Scout.com rates Riley as the No. 87 player in the nation and is currently playing for the Hargrave Military Academy, which has produced some NBA talent. He currently averages 22.8 points per game in five games.
