Nov 17 9:11 am A second look at that 6-5 win: “It was just one of those crazy nights”(48)By David Pollak NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Actually, I’m typing away somewhere in the skies between Chicago and the next stop on the road trip. But since I won’t be able to post anything until we land, we’ll go with the Nashville dateline. Some games end and you wonder how you’re going to fill the space in the print edition. Others, and you worry about pretty good material that ends up on the cutting room floor. That 6-5 victory over the Blackhawks last night was one of the latter. I intended to post as soon as I got back to the hotel room, but ran into technical difficulties. Once those were resolved, well, it was awfully late and I ran out of energy.Back to hockey and a no-particular-order look at events at the United Center before the Sharks take on the Predators later today.********Brian Boucher is quite up front when it comes to his game. You wonder, for example, what he was thinking on that giveaway goal to Kris Versteeg in the first period and he’ll tell you. In detail. It’s not cold out there by Chicago standards, but it’s still pretty blustery and glad I remembered to bring along the tuque and scarf.Word from the morning skate is this: Everybody not named Evgeni Nabokov should be available for today’s game against the Blackhawks. That includes Jonathan Cheechoo, who has missed the last four games with an upper body injury, as well as Mike Grier (lower body) and Christian Ehrhoff (middle body), each of whom left the Calgary game early. That according to Coach Todd McLellan. Cheechoo and Grier were either slightly more cautious or simply deferring to their coach as they said they felt fine at that moment, but it would be a game-time decision. Nabokov was out on the ice this morning for the first time in six days and only the second time since he hurt himself making that final save of the shootout against St. Louis. But he didn’t fully participate in the drills. Most of the time he was doing exercises along the boards, testing to see if he could push off one leg or the other. When most of the skaters left the ice, he did get in front of the goal and handled a few shots.Afterward he said it felt better out there than the last time, but, no, he wasn’t ready to put the equipment on for tonight’s game. The dads were on hand for the practice — most of them wearing jerseys with their name on the back, which certainly made job easier. But, as most of you know, this is the fathers’ trip and the decision was made to extend it on each end — flying to Chicago one day early, staying overnight in Nashville after Monday’s game. The majority of the 18 dads (plus, in two cases, brothers of players) are meeting the team in Chicago, but there were eight relatives on the chartered plane when it left San Jose, mostly Western Canadians. I needed to talk with a couple for a story running in Saturday’s print edition, so I headed to the jet center this morning and was able to connect with Brad Lukowich’s father, Bernie, and Jody Shelley’s dad, Ned. Anyway, this is something the Sharks have done only once before, the infamous trip in late December 2006 when Phoenix embarrassed the Sharks 8-0 and GM Doug Wilson gave players an earful in the team bus on the tarmac while the dads were on the plane waiting and watching. San Jose went out and beat Dallas the next night, 4-2. And Evgeni Nabokov went another day without skating. That was the injury update this morning.“Cheech isn’t going to play tonight,” Coach Todd McLellan said. “He’s real close — cliche, if it was playoff time, he’d be in there. But we’re not prepared to run the risk at this point.”Cheehcoo absorbed a hard hit from Keith Tkachuk in the final minute of regulation during the Nov. 6 game against St. Louis, suffering what has been described only as an upper body injury. The right wing said he expects to play Sunday in Chicago, and that the decision not to play tonight was a mutual one between himself and his coach.“It’s a long season,” Cheechoo said. “We’re hoping to play into June and I want to be healthy for that. I don’t want something nagging me for the rest of the season, so let’s get rid of it totally.”McLellan said Nabokov is feeling better, despite not skating for a third straight day. Nabokov also hurt himself in that St. Louis game, and has tested the lower body injury on the ice only once, Monday. Last night, though, was the closest he has come yet to dissecting a loss and, in an indirect way, mentioning the officials. No, it wasn’t about Dave Jackson’s quick whistle that nullified what appeared to be a first-period goal by Joe Thornton. Instead, it came as McLellan was going through the Nashville goals.“You look at that first goal – we probably gave them that one,” McLellan said. “Their second goal, in my opinion, was offside and the third one, we’re on the back end of a power play and take a penalty. There are a couple mistakes we can correct quite easily. Obviously the overtime goal was the faceoff .”That second goal was about as disjointed as they come and frankly — without benefit of replay or TV commentary — I was as bewildered as most of the players on the ice seemed to be. Nabokov did not skate — and he could not say for certain when he would be out on the ice next.“I think we’ll take it a day at a time and see how it is because it’s been a different feeling every day,” said the goalie, who did go through limited drills on Monday. “It’s all going forward . . .but it’s not getting much better.”“It” is the unspecified lower body injury that Nabokov suffered making the final shootout save in last Thursday’s 5-4 victory over St. Louis. Nabokov said he was only able to skate for about 10 minutes on Monday. And on a slow day in San Jose, here’s the little modicum of news that I’ve got: Evgeni Nabokov and Jonathan Cheechoo did go through a series of informal drills this morning. They’re still listed as day-to-day and it clearly wasn’t a genuine workout because the rest of their teammates were taking part in the team’s annual charity golf tournament. If I had more particulars, I’d share them. There might not have been much hockey news here, but there was in Toronto and it even had a San Jose angle. Monday night, Igor Larionov became the first player who ever wore a Sharks jersey to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Yes, he’s there for his play in international competition and with the Red Wings, but he made his mark in San Jose as well.I won’t go into all his contributions during his 97 games with the Sharks. But let’s just say the case can be made that he did as much — if not more — than anyone to transform the franchise from lovable losers to playoff contenders who came within one win of the Western Conference finals their first time in the post-season.But I do want to share some personal memories. And, hey, it’s my blog. And a post-mortem on 4-2 loss to Phoenix(30)By David Pollak PHOENIX — The Sharks have their golf tournament today and there’s no practice to cover, so I booked a leisurely mid-day flight back home. Which gives me rare time for a morning post on a travel day.A second look at last night’s 4-2 loss to the Coyotes momentarily. Before that, though, I figure it’s time to mention the one guy in the Sharks day-in, day-out lineup who doesn’t have a goal this season and isn’t a defenseman (Brad Lukowich, Douglas Murray) or primarily there as an intimidating physical presence (Jody Shelley). That would be Jeremy Roenick. After 16 games a year ago, Roenick had five goals on his way to 14 for the season. This year, he’s been blanked. And this may be a little surprising coming from such a competitive guy with a lot of flair, but Roenick says that’s not bothering him a bit.“Scoring goals, I’ve scored 509 of them and whether I score another one or not, it’s not important to me,” Roenick said. “What’s important is I’m doing the right things for the team, and I’m doing the right things in being prepared to play.” Read the rest of this entry » a2a_linkname="Jeremy Roenick OK with no goals? You can decide/debate if that’s a good thing or a bad thing — without my help, right? I’m going to focus on the game that Brad Lukowich played. He had a role in two critical moments, but the truth is, that’s just an excuse to share a great story he told Saturday morning. Lukowich played for the Stars from 1999 to 2002 — when they traded him on his wedding day. We’ll get back to that later. First, those two moments. The first came early in the third period when he muffed a chance to move the puck out of danger and it ended up being Dallas’s only goal of the evening.“It was an unfortunate bounce,” Lukowich said after the game. “The thing was spinning. It happens.”What follows next in the game is what matters.“It’s either you make another (mistake) or the game goes on and you don’t let it happen,” the defenseman said. “I came back to the bench, guys gave me a pat on the back and it was over.” Read the rest of this entry » a2a_linkname="A 2-1 excuse to tell the story of how Dallas traded Brad Lukowich on his wedding day";a2a_linkurl="http://blogs.mercurynews.com/sharks/2008/11/09/a-2-1-excuse-to-tell-story-of-how-dallas-once-traded-lukowich-on-his-wedding-day/"; Nov 8 12:30 pm Nabokov: “I feel much much much better”; Cheechoo out, Goc in against Dallas(43)By David Pollak Sometimes the day starts out better than expected.Like at this morning’s skate, when Evgeni Nabokov — in shorts, with no brace, no taping and no apparent problem — climbed the stairs in the lower bowl at HP Pavilion to sit with his father and watch his teammates practice. Made my job easier. We talked. Players have been told by the coaching staff NOT to be any more specific than the team is about their injuries and Nabokov didn’t cough up any new information. But he did confirm Friday’s news that the damage wasn’t as bad as originally feared and he added that he might be back on skates as early as Monday. I asked him if the aftermath of the final save of the shootout in that 5-4 victory over St. Louis on Thursday night frightened him as much as it frightened the crowd.“Yeah, it was a little bit of a scary moment for me also,” said Nabokov, who didn’t get up right away and had to be helped off the ice. “I feel much much much better. It’s not even close to what I felt after the game.” Read the rest of this entry » a2a_linkname="Nabokov: “I feel much much much better”; Cheechoo out, Goc in against Dallas";a2a_linkurl="http://blogs.mercurynews.com/sharks/2008/11/08/nabokov-i-feel-much-much-much-better-but-cheechoo-out-goc-in-tonight/"; « Previous Entries Subscribe via RSS ReaderSubscribe via EmailEnter your email address:Tag CloudAdd new taglNHLSharksGetAd('tile','4','','','www.mercurynews.com','','160','90');GetAd('tile','5','','','www.mercurynews.com','','160','90');GetAd('tile','10','','','www.mercurynews.com','','160','600'); Recent Posts A second look at that 6-5 win: “It was just one of those crazy nights” All Sharks (except Nabokov) healthy for today’s game; dads all smiles at practice Sharks head to Chicago early with dads; scoring change negates assist record No Cheechoo, no Nabokov tonight against Calgary — but Boyle is back Post-mortem on OT loss: offside on Nashville’s second goal, JR on the power play Cheechoo closer to returning than Nabokov; Boyle misses practice for daughter’s birth Recent Comments boilerbink: "Hey Houlder: You’ve got it wrong Nabby=Steve Shields Boucher had a brutal game against the..." tadpole: "#35 Jeff - Drew said “Shinny Hockey”.
