RSS A lucky break for New Jersey Devils' Holikby Rich Chere/The Star-Ledger Monday November 17, 2008, 7:49 PM Aristide Economopoulos/The Star-LedgerBobby Holik said his hand feels good after the scary injury and subsequent surgery, but he's not yet ready to begin skating again. Devils center Bobby Holik said Monday he feels fortunate he didn't lose his right pinkie to an infection. Although he knew he was bleeding inside his glove after being struck by an Alex Ovechkin shot Oct. 18 in Washington, Holik said he didn't realize how serious the problem was until a doctor told him Monday as he had the cast removed and pins taken out of the finger. "When you have a bone coming through your skin, there's a tremendous chance of infection. (The doctor) said if it was any worse, I could've lost a finger," Holik revealed after stopping by the Devils' practice facility at the Prudential Center. "It wasn't just a broken finger. This was an open wound. Infection was a problem, the biggest worry the doctor had." There is no word on whether Rolston is moving closer to rejoining the team for practice or how his ankle is feeling. "Sammy is quite a guy," Sutter told me. "In more ways than one. He's certainly very intriguing He's got that skill level to his game that you like to see. He's good on our power play. "He's one of those guys who doesn't get too rattled about too much. You do have gobs of your hair fall out every now and then in a game. He brings things to the table and he does some things and you say, 'Oh, my God. I can't believe he just did that. Or just tried that.' But I give him credit. He tries it." Brian Rolston (ankle sprain), Bobby Holik (broken right pinkie), Andy Greene (broken right hand), Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond and, of course, Martin Brodeur all remain out. There is a great deal of respect between the two capable veterans. But it is also true that the fight for playing time has become very personal for Clemmensen, who entered this season with 28 games of NHL experience and a promise of nothing more than a season in the minors with the Devils' Lowell (AHL) team. For Clemmensen, the 31-year-old who won his first game of the season Saturday night by stopping Alex Ovechkin and two other Washington Capitals in a shootout, this is a fight for the chance to remain an NHL goalie, whether with the Devils or elsewhere. And he believes he is seizing the opportunity.Continue reading "Devils' Clemmensen fighting to show he belongs in NHL" » Post a comment | View commentsSee more in Breaking News, Devils beat reporters blog, Devils print edition stories from the Star-LedgerTags: The Star-Ledger Devils get a day off after 6-5 shootout victory over Capsby Rich Chere/The Star-LedgerSunday November 16, 2008, 9:43 AMAfter a shootout victory over the Washington Capitals Saturday night, the Devils were rewarded by coach Brent Sutter with some time off. They got Sunday off and don't practice again until 3 p.m. Monday."I'm tired right now," goalie Scott Clemmensen said Saturday night. They earned a day off, and won't play again until Thursday.1. What makes the Devils think that a shootout win ends their troubles? They need something to build their confidence back up. Ending their four-game losing streak is a major step for this club, which is still battling key injuries. Remember, they need to stay within striking distance of a playoff spot until Martin Brodeur gets back and every point matters.Continue reading "Devils get mental, physical break after emotional victory over Caps" » Post a comment | View commentsSee more in Breaking NewsTags: The Star-Ledger Clemmensen's mask takes beating from Ovechkin in Devils' 6-5 victory over Capitalsby Rich Chere/The Star-LedgerSaturday November 15, 2008, 11:51 PM Al Bello/Getty ImagesScott Clemmensen stopped Alex Ovechkin in the shootout of the Devils' 6-5 victory.NOTEBOOK Scott Clemmensen was joking, but the Devils' goalie would like to send Capitals sniper Alex Ovechkin a bill for a new mask.It was Ovechkin who dented Clemmensen's mask with a shot on Feb. 25, 2007, in Washington. He scored the tying goal in that game, which Clemmensen and the Devils eventually won.Saturday night, Ovechkin did it again. "I think it's a huge win for us," captain Jamie Langenbrunner said. "Obviously we have five days now until we play again. That would've been tough sitting on five (losses) in a row. Rarely, in fact, do NHL goaltenders have to deal with the level of panic Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom can create during a flurry around the goal crease with a game hanging in the balance. So when Ovechkin scored his second goal to tie the game with one second remaining in regulation time, Devils goalie Scott Clemmensen took a quick glance at the clock and then started thinking about overtime and a possible shootout."They came out hard and threw the puck at the net and there was a scramble in front," Clemmensen said. Here are a few things to watch:1. Will Scott Clemmensen get some offensive support? They've scored five goals in their last four games. Clemmensen played well in Washington Friday night, but could use some support.2. Will Alexander Semin play for the Capitals? He leads the NHL with 13 goals, so it's a big deal. Semin suffered what is believed to be a shoulder injury late in the second period Friday night.3. Anssi Salmela. He's only played nine NHL games, but the Devils' rookie defenseman is fun to watch. He takes chances, makes mistakes and gets shot on net. He could give coach Brent Sutter some gray hairs, but he gives fans their money's worth. Among them: the struggle to score goals, a possible breakout for Patrik Elias, and a good effort by Scott Clemmensen in goal.1. Unlike the Rangers' game, you can't complain about the effort. The Devils played hard for 60 minutes. That's the good news. The bad: They play again Saturday night, their third game in four nights. Are the forwards who are getting extra shifts going to have anything left? They actually feel fortunate that they have another shot at redemption so soon. "We've got to be a little more opportunistic when we have the chance to score," Brian Gionta said. I can't remember it being this tough for the Devils to score in a very long time. Fortunately, Sutter has two even-tempered goalies, because it would be logical for Weekes to feel he should get an extended chance to take over for the injured Martin Brodeur and just as understandable for Clemmensen to think he'd be the No. 1 guy if he plays well. Coach Brent Sutter suggested at the morning skate that Martin could use the next few days off and be ready by Thursday night against the Florida Panthers. But Martin just told me he expects to play. The game continues. 2. Does Scott Clemmensen earn points? Sutter says he doesn't have a No. 1 goalie, but a goaltending tandem. The coach says he'll decide game by game which goalie he plays, regardless of how he performs. However, Clemmensen has his own ideas. He sees this as his big chance and intends to seize it. 3. He took a shot in the left skate. "I'm good," he said. "Just because Zach is hurting, he wanted to get me, too." Mike Rupp joked that Parise was above the circle when he shot, out of his danger range because he scores so many goals from in close. Parise says his left heel is still very sore, but he'll play. "It's definitely sore," he said. "It's tough because the skate presses on it, but it will be fine. The swelling went down and the color is better." He said he came off the ice Thursday during practice because it was too sore. "It was sore (the night he got hit), but the worst was the next day," he said. "When I put my shoe on it was sore.
