Snowshoeing the Superior Hiking Trail
Snowshoeing the Superior Hiking Trail
Wait... Before you get lost in my snowshoeing adventure, check out photos from my most recent adventures on my homepage
When I started planning our snowshoeing trip I spent a lot of time trying to find information about some hikes on the internet. I was somewhat unlucky and only found good information from the Superior Hiking Trail Association Website. Hopefully, my recap of my trip can help you plan yours.
Hike 1 - Gooseberry Falls State ParkWe did this hike the first day, because I thought it would be nice to see the falls and it would be a nice start to a three day trip. Our goal was to follow the snowshoe path up the south side of the river to the fifth falls and then cross the river and come back down on the north side of the river. Unfortunately the path had such little snow cover we decided almost immediately to hike on Gooseberry River. The second part of our hike we decided to take off our snowshoes and follow the snowshoe loop on the south side of Hwy 61. This is a beautiful hike to a cliff that overlooks Lake Superior.Total hiking time for both hikes: 4 HoursOverall rating: B Path is much too beaten down for snowshoeing. If you accept that, or hike on the river, then it's a beautiful hike. The visitors center at Gooseberry falls is brand new and worth visiting!
This is Rose and me at the visitors center. They have an interactive exhibit about the wildlife, including this stuffed Wolf.
Hike 2 - Tettegouche State ParkOn this hike we finally made it onto the Superior Hiking Trail. We found a path with enough snow cover that made snowshoeing much more enjoyable. We started our hike by parking at the trailhead near the high falls. We decided to hike and see the falls before trying our planned hike along the Superior Hiking Trail. Regrettably this cost us much too much daylight and energy than it was worth.
Here are Rose and me at the high falls

The high falls. You can see open water at the bottom. Otherwise this is completely frozen. The park claims these are the highest water falls in Minnesota. They seemed higher than Minnehaha, so I can't argue against that claim!
Brave Rose. She takes her life in her own hands and sits on the snowy cliff over looking the high falls
After seeing the high falls we decided to see the two step falls too, which were further downstream. A draw back to seeing these water falls was that we had to climb back up the steep river embankment and this wore both Rose and I out, which affected our later hike that same day.

For the second part of our hike we went from the trailhead to the Superior Hiking Trail and headed west with intentions to make it to Mic Mac Lake. This part of the trail had good snow cover and was a challenging hike. The most challenging portion of the hike was climbing up a hill to the lookout point which is marked on the map. The climb was difficult and rose about 100 feet. The sign at the start of the climb called that portion "the drainpipe" and it was not an exageration! The lookout was beautiful and offered a panoramic view of Lake Superior and Superior National Forest.
The lookout at the top of the "drainpipe"
Unfortunately our earlier trek to see the waterfalls and the challenging hike up the "drainpipe" wore both Rose and I out, and ate into our valuable daylight. We decided at the intersection of the Superior Hiking Trail and the ski trail (right near Raven Rock lookout) that we should turn back to our car. We walked (snowshoes off) along the ski trail back to the trailhead. I apologize to the skiers when Rose and I decided to run part of the way because I'm sure wasn't good on the grooming. But, we felt like running!
Worn out!
Total time hiking both hikes: 4.5 HoursOverall rating: B- Had we skipped the falls and started straight out on the Superior Hiking Trail we would have probably made it to Mic Mac Lake, but that would not have made this hike great because it still would be an out and back hike rather than a loop. I would not recommend hiking the Superior Hiking Trail to Mic Mac Lake because heading back would be boring (seeing the same things again) and potentially dangerous (I would not consider hiking down the "drainpipe" when it's snow covered!). But the falls were worth seeing. I would recommend seeing the falls and then hiking along the river if I were to do this again.
To cap off the day we decided to see the Split Rock Lighthouse on our way back to our hotel in Two Harbors. Unfortunately, the light wasn't on even though we both thought it was plenty dark out. We were caught by surprise to findout that the parking for the light house closes at sunset. Explain that one to me... Wouldn't you want to see the thing after sunset to see it light up?
These pictures of the lighthouse were taken using a slow exposure feature of my digital camera. I'm very impressed with the brightness (you can see the sunset in the background), but you definitly need a tripod in order for the photos to have any clarity!
Hike 3 - Split Rock Lighthouse State ParkSaving the suspense. This was by far the best hike of the three. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good snowshoeing hike along the north shore. We started by parking at the DOT Wayside at the base of the split rock river and then hiked along Superior Hiking Trail up to the river crossing. The snow cover was minimal, but at times wearing snowshoes made the hike easier. There are a few climbs that are challenging, but nothing as difficult as the "drainpipe".
After three days Rose finally found a good hiking stick (Although it was mostly used for poking). Someone kindly left it the Hwy. 61 wayside. Rose returned it there when she was finished using it.
One of many creeks that feed into the split rock river
The original bridge that crosses the Split Rock River was destroyed by an ice dam. The new bridge is an additional 1/4 mile upstream (which added an unexpected 1/2 mile to our hike). At the crossing is a campsite and sign-in book.
Rose contributing her personal touch to the bridge log book.
Crossing the brand new bridge.
Sitting down for a cup of Hot Cocoa on the other side of the river
After crossing the bridge we continued our hike by trekking down the Split Rock River towards Lake Superior (ironically we defeated the whole purpose of crossing the river by walking on it!). I recommend sliding down the frozen waterfalls (recommended to us in the bridge log book). Don't forget to look up and see the famous split rock! It's located about one and a half miles up stream from lake superior, or about 3/4 mile downstream from the bridge.
Waterfall sliding. It seemed safe, so what the hell!
Me in front of Split Rock.
The walk downstream took about half the time as going up stream. This was for two reasons. 1) We were heading in a more direct path, and 2) This river drops an amazing amount in its last 2 1/2 miles. According to the DNR map it's about 250 feet! To cap off a great three days of hiking we followed the river under the hwy all the way to Lake Superior and collected agates.
Rose's agate hunting. Notice the walking stick being abused and being used as a poking stick.
Total time hiking: 3.5 HoursOverall rating: A This was a good hike. I recommend that you follow the hike the same way we did. Hike upstream along the Superior Hiking Trail to view some beautiful panoramas of the river and the woods, and then hike downstream on the river. Don't forget to slide down the waterfalls! Rose especially like the equal balance of trail hiking and river hiking.
Additional Info:
We stayed at the Superior Shores Resort. I recommend it. Other than getting a rogue wake up call at 6:15 AM I have no complaints. If you stay near two harbors then you need to stop at Betty's Pies (about 1 mile north of Superior Shores Resort on Hwy 61). Their homemade pies are terrific!
