Many people skip breakfast because they don't have time or they don't like traditional breakfast foods. But if you wait until lunch to eat, your body assumes you're fasting and responds by slowing your metabolism. You're also more likely to consume more calories with bigger meals and snacks later on in the day.
To assist you in your weight loss efforts, make an effort to eat breakfast every morning and be sure to include protein and fiber. If you're pressed for time, try eating something quick like cereal and milk, peanut butter on toast, or cottage cheese and fruit. And remember, if you eat breakfast, you have a greater chance of burning off calories (during a run, for instance!) since you're consuming them early in the day.

To make sure you're not fatigued enough to skip your runs, it's important to make good nutrition choices. Here are some energy-boosting tips to keep in mind:
Try to include a lean protein such as chicken, turkey, fish, or low-fat dairy at every meal. High-protein foods will help keep you from getting hungry and getting low on energy between meals.
Pick whole grains whenever possible. They contain more fiber, take longer to digest, and they'll supply you with more energy than simple carbs.
Avoid caffeine, or try to limit yourself to one cup of coffee or other caffeinated beverage a day. Consuming too much caffeine can actually make you feel weak or jittery.

Try These IdeasWednesday August 27, 2008Lack of time is a popular excuse for missing regular runs. But when you do take the time to run, you may actually find that you'll have more energy and be more efficient at getting things done. Take these opportunities to get running:
Break up your runs. Stressing about getting your 10-mile long run done? Don't put pressure on yourself to get it all done at once. You can break it up in morning and evening runs. As long as you complete it during the same day (without sleeping in between), your body is getting the same basic benefits as it would from a long, continuous run.
Run in the morning. Morning runners are more consistent than those who run at other times of the day. When you run first thing in the morning, you won't have to worry about putting off your run because something else comes up during the day or you're too exhausted in the evening to run.
Socialize on the run. Instead of having lunch or coffee with a friend, catch up with buddies during a run. Set regular dates with running friends, so you'll be more motivated to run.
