Get the "Spirit of the Marathon"

Sunday October 12, 2008It might be a bit early to start your holiday shopping, but here's a great idea for the runners on your list: the just-released "Spirit of the Marathon" DVD. The documentary captures the unique stories of six runners preparing for the Chicago Marathon. Coming from all different backgrounds and levels of ability, the runners all have varied reasons for running the race and they all face challenges along the way. In addition to being entertaining, the film is very educational, as it tells the rich history of marathon running through vintage footage and interviews with running legends. Even if you've never run a marathon (or plan to run one), you're sure to be intrigued and inspired by this movie. Discussion: How can I recover from a hard run?

Sunday October 12, 2008Running/jogging forum member "TeeTime42" posted this question: "I can't seem to fully recover from a hard run. I normally take a day off after a fartlek training, but am still really sore, mainly in my hip joints, knees, calves, shins, the next time I run. I drink a whey protein shake and take fish oil every day. Can anyone recommend a good supplement to speed recovery or any other advice?" Lighten Your Mood With Running Humor

Friday October 10, 2008It seems like everyone I talk to these days is worried about the economy. With everything that's going on, how could they not be? Take a break from all the gloom and doom in the news and escape with some running humor. These items celebrate runners' unique sense of humor: You Know You're a Runner When…: Once you've been running for a while, you realize that you have certain habits and say things that only fellow runners can understand and relate to, such as referring to five miles as a "short run." See how many of these "You Know You're a Runner When…" items you're guilty of. Cartoons for Runners: Recognize yourself in any of these? Jokes for Runners and Walkers: Telling jokes is always a good distraction when running with others. Comments (1)Permalink

Should I Stretch Before or After Running?

Wednesday October 8, 2008I talk to lots of runners who are confused about whether they should stretch before or after running, or both. Now a new study offers more evidence to suggest that it's best to not stretch cold muscles and wait until after your run to stretch. Researchers from the University of Nevada Las Vegas found that two common pre-running stretches for the hamstrings and quadriceps may actually reduce performance by decreasing leg power. "Developing flexibility is important for reducing sports injury, but the time to stretch is after, not before, performance," said UNLV kinesiology professor and study co-author Bill Holcomb.
