CROSS COUNTRY HEADLINESPioneers race at AMC meetNov. 8, 2008 PEPPER PIKE, Ohio - The Point Park men's and women's cross country teams competed at the American Mideast Conference champsionship meet at Ursuline Saturday. The Pioneers placed 10th in the women's competition and were 12th in the men's race.Lindsay Dill was the top finisher for the Point Park women's team. The freshman from Erie finished the race in 22 minutes, 38.8 seconds to take 46th place individually. Rainy weather made the track very muddy and contributed to slower times. Reuben Rono (Kapsabet, Kenya) placed 61st with a time of 31 minutes, 10 seconds and was the top finisher on the Point Park men's team. Rono and Dill were the top finishers on the men's and women's teams, respectively, in six of the Pioneers seven meets this season."It was a tough race to run given the conditions," said Point Park coach Jim Irvin. "Both teams ran well against good competition. The women's team had a solid season, and can make some strides if we continue to improve."Injuries took their toll on the men's team this season. We had some runners miss races with injuries and some guys ran through injuries. Overall, I'm proud of the work ethic that was shown."It was the final race of the year for Point Park as the top two teams and the top seven individuals advanced to the NAIA championships Nov. 22. Malone won the men's race with 20 points after claiming each of the top four individual spots and seven of the top 13. Cedarville (63 points) was second and advanced to the NAIA meet.In the women's race, Cedarville took four of the top seven individual places and won the meet with 31 points. Malone was second with 49 points.Rounding out the Point Park women's squad were senior Makenzie Smith (23:17), Sarah Austin (24:08), Carina Jollie (25:26), Heather Abernethy (25:37) and Leticia Henry (25:55).For the men, Alan Nascone (33:46), Mike Simpson (34:34) Jared Ferree (34:35) and Riley Faison (35:58) were other top finishers. Nascone, Dill pace Pioneers at WalshOct. 18, 2008NORTH CANTON, Ohio - Alan Nascone and Lindsay Dill paced the Point Park men's and women's cross country teams, respectively, Saturday at the Walsh Invitational.Dill finished 17th individually to lead the women's team to a fifth-place finish. Dill, who has been the top Point Park women's runner in five of six meets, had a time of 20 minutes, 46 seconds.Makenzie Smith (21:43), Carina Jollie (23:51) and Heather Abernethy (24:07) were the next finishers for the women's team.Nascone's time of 30 minutes, seven seconds was good for 30th place as he led the Point Park men's team to a sixth-place finish. Other top finishers for the Pioneers included Mike Simpson (30:33) and Jared Ferree (33:50).Point Park travels to NAIA regionals Nov. 8 at Ursuline.Cross country competes at CMUOct. 11, 2008The Point Park men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational Saturday.The Point Park women's team placed 12th out of 14 teams, and the Pioneers' men's team placed 14th.Lindsay Dill (Erie) paced the women's team as her time of 21 minutes, 57 seconds was good for 59th place. Other top finishers for Point Park include Makenzie Smith (22:19) and Sarah Austin (23:33).Reuben Rono (Kapsabet, Kenya) was the top finisher for the men's team with a time of 31 minutes, four seconds. Finishing next for the men were Mike Simpson (32:00) and Alan Nascone (32:25).Point Park competes in the Walsh Invitational Saturday.Women take third, Rono leads menGREENSBURG, Pa. - The Point Park women's cross country had three runners place in the top 16 and took third place at the Pitt-Greensburg Invitational Saturday. Freshman Lindsay Dill (pictured left), a native of Erie, placed ninth individually to help Point Park earn the highest team placement in school history. It was the first top-10 finish in Dill's career. In the men's race, Point Park's Reuben Rono (Kapsabet, Kenya), pictured below right, finished in third place as the Pioneers placed sixth of eight teams. Rono's third-place effort is the second highest finish by a men's runner in school history.Freshman Sarah Austin (Sweet Valley) and Makenzie Smith (Butler) finished 15thand 16th, respectively to give the Point Park women's team three runners in the top 16 spots. "It was a tremendous job by the women's team today," said Point Park coach Jim Irvin. "They ran well and raced well. As a team, we probably combined to pass 20 runners in the race. Lindsay was in 12th place until she passed three runners in the last mile. Leticia Henry and Martine Saul passed a lot of runners down the stretch to finish strong."In the men's race, it was a really well-run race by Reuben. Mike Simpson and Alan Nascone competed hard, and Riley Faison did a nice job in his first race at Point Park." Simpson (Endicott, N.Y.) and Nascone (Pittsburgh) were second and third, respectively for the Pioneers, who were without the injured Jared Ferree and Ian Mollick. Faison transferred to Point Park last month and will provide a boast to the men's team.Point Park travels to the Carnegie Mellon Invitational Saturday. The women's race is at 2:15 p.m. followed by the men's race at 3:15 p.m. The women's and men's races were originally scheduled for 2:00 and 2:45 p.m., respectively, but were moved back 15 minutes. Special activities will be held at the meet as part of Point Park's Family Weekend, which includes various events Oct. 10 and 11.Rono, Smith lead Pioneers Sept. 27, 2008LATROBE, Pa. -- Reuben Rono and Makenzie Smith led the way for the Point Park men's and women's cross country teams Saturday at the St. Vincent Invitational. Rono (Kapsabet, Kenya), pictured left, finished in 21st place with a time of 28 minutes, 39 seconds to help the men's team to a ninth-place finish.Smith (Butler) was the top finisher on the women's side. Her time of 22 minutes, five seconds was good for 25th place as the Pioneers' women's team took eighth place."It was a very tough course and the competition was good," said Point Park coach Jim Irvin. "The course had two long hills, and our runners worked hard to battle through. The men's team got a little healthier with the return of Jared Ferree, although the women's team is battling some injuries."Other top finishers for the men's team included Mike Simpson (31:40) and Alan Nascone (31:46). Ferree was the Pioneers' top runner last year although Saturday was his first competition of the season. He missed the first three meets with a leg injury.On the women's side, Lindsay Dill was 29th with a time of 22 minutes, 10 seconds while Sarah Austin had a time of 23 minutes, 15 seconds.Point Park travels to the Pitt-Greensburg Invitational Saturday at 10 a.m. Pioneers give back to communitySept. 22, 2008PITTSBURGH - Members of the Point Park men's and women's cross country teams volunteered Saturday with KaBOOM's Playground Build Day in Clairton, Pa.The Pioneers did not compete Saturday, but used their day off to help construct the playground near Pittsburgh. Point Park was involved in the program for the second straight year, and players performed tasks ranging from general playground construction to carrying 80-lb. bags of concrete across the property. The Point Park men finished ninth out of 18 teams with freshman Reuben Rono (Kapsabet, Kenya) leading the way with a 22nd-place individual finish in 29 minutes, six seconds. In the women's race, freshman Lindsay Dill (Erie) was the top finisher for Point Park. She finished in 32nd place with a time of 21 minutes, 36 seconds as the Pioneers were ninth out of 17 teams.For the second straight week, Rono and Dill paced the Point Park squads (see below) while the rest of the lineups once again turned in solid performances."Both teams ran well against some good competition," said Point Park coach Jim Irvin. "A lot of runners are improving their times week to week, and if they continue to steadily get better, then our results as a team will improve."For the women, senior Makenzie Smith (Butler) set a personal-best time of 21 minutes, 28 seconds and finished shortly behind Dill. Freshman Sarah Austin (Sweet Valley) was third for the Pioneers at 25:10.Senior Mike Simpson (Endicott, N.Y.) was the second Pioneers' men's runner to cross the finish line with a time of 32:04, and Irvin said junior Alan Nascone (Pittsburgh) and sophomore Ian Mollick (East Vandergrift) performed well.Rono, Dill lead PPU at Cal. InviteSept. 6, 2008 CALIFORNIA - Freshmen Reuben Rono and Lindsay Dill led the Point Park men's and women's cross country teams in their season-opening meet at the California Invitational Saturday.Rono (Kapsabet, Kenya), pictured left, helped the Pioneers' men's team finish 11 out of 14 teams with a time of 29:03, which is the second best time by a Point Park men's runner in school history. Jesse Bender held the previous men's record.Dill (Erie), pictured below, right, led the Point Park women's team to a ninth place finish out of 15 teams with a time of 21:32, which is the fastest time by a Point Park woman at the course. The team placement was the highest finish in the last three years. "It was a very solid effort in our season-opening meet," said Point Park coach Jim Irvin. "Especially on the women's side, this meet included a lot of ranked teams from NCAA Division I and II. The team looks to continue adding to its success next week at the Penn St. Behrend Invitational."Senior Makenzie Smith (Butler) was second on the women's team with a time of 22:25, which is the second fastest time by a Point Park woman at the Cal course. Three freshmen with solid finishes include Sarah Austin (Sweet Valley) at 23:03, Leticia Henry (Ellicott City, Md.) at 25:42 and Martine Saul (Augusta, Ga.) at 25:54.Veterans who are well ahead of last year's times include Heather Abernathy (LaPorte) and Carina Jollie (Pittsburgh), who had times of 26:30 and 26:34, respectively.In the women's meet, Slippery Rock took first followed by Grove City an Franciscan. California won the men's meet followed by Slippery Rock and St. Francis.Point Park travels to the Penn St. Behrend Invitational Saturday at 11 a.m. Cross Country Teams ReportAug. 17, 2008The Point Park men's and women's cross country teams reported to campus today to begin preseason training under fourth-year coach Jim Irvin." I'm excited for the season," said Irvin last week. "We will be much improved from last year. Our goal is to establish a good base of fitness and continue to improve as the season goes along. Our student athletes are good students, good citizens and they represent Point Park well."
