Fotini Xenidis '11 & Kathryn Kulowski '11 are NESCAC Champs After Doing Same at Little 3
Both Fotini Xenidis '11 (main photo) and Kathryn Kulowski '11 (photo insert upper right) captured a first-place finish during the annual NESCAC Championships, this year hosted by Hamilton Sat., April 26. Xenidis, in winning the javelin, threw 141-6 1/2, the second-best toss of her career while better the rest of the field by more than 30 feet. Kulowski cleared 5-1 as one of three jumpers to do so but won the event on fewest attempts. As a team, Wesleyan amassed 53 points to place eighth. The top performance by a Cardinal on the track came from Lynn Edmonds '11, whose :58.59 clocking was her best of the season and good for third place. A week later during the New England Division III Championships at Coast Guard Sat., May 3, Xenidis took another javelin title with a toss of 141-4. She led the way for the team as Wesleyan collected 21.5 team points to place 14th of 28 scoring teams. Other individual placewinners for the Cardinals were Christina Barnett '11 (7th in the 100m hurdles), Kulowski (tied for 6th in the high jump) and Lucia Pier '08 (5th in the 5k). The 4x400m relay squad of Hannah Overton '11, Kiran Sheffrin '10, Steph O'Brien '08 and Lynn Edmonds '11 came in fifth. On Sat., April 19, Wesleyan picked up three first-place finishes during the Little Three meet, this year hosted by Amherst. Xenidis took the javelin (115-3 1/2) and the discus (99-11 1/4) while Kulowski cleared 5-3 to win the high jump. As a team, Wesleyan finished behind its Little Three rivals as the scoring was Williams 169, Amherst 120.5, Wesleyan 93.5. The Cardinals' best efforts on the track came from Edmonds with a solid second-place posting in the 400m (:58.91) and Barnett in the 100m hurdles, also with a second-place effort (:16.57). Wesleyan had just one participant at the U. of New Hampshire Thurs.-Sat., May 8-10 for the New England Open meet. There Ravenna Neville '10 placed ninth in the 10k. At the team's final action before the NCAAs, the ECAC Division III meet at Springfield Thurs.-Fri., May 15-16, Sokki Chham '11 was the lone Cardinal placewinner as her 16-11 1/4 long jump was god for seventh place. Xenidis qualified for the NCAAs with her best javelin throw this season seeding her fourth among the participants at Wisconsin-Oshkosh Thurs-Sat, May 22-24. There, Xenidis placed 11th in the trials and did not advance to the finals.
