Sam Grover '08 Wins Two Regional Triple Jump Titles, Also Places Second in New England Open
After placing third in the triple jump at the 2007 NESCAC Track & Field Championships and second the two years before that, Sam Grover '08 (photo) capped his four-year career with a NESCAC title by the slightest of margins during the meet at Hamilton Sat., April 26. With a jump of 47-8 1/2, Grover took first place by less than 1/2 inch while teammate Tommie Lark '11 was third in the event. Grover collected 23 team points for the Cardinals as he also placed fourth in the high jump, fifth in the long jump and fifth in the 110m hurdles. Lark was second in the long jump, less than 1/2 inch out of first, and Mike Moody '10 was second in the javelin with a throw of almost 180 feet. In all the Cardinals gained 41 of their 67 team points, good for fourth place among the 11 colleges, from the field events. Individually on the track, Jonah Blumstein's '09 third-place posting in the 10k led the Cardinals. The distance medley relay squad of Chris Foster '09, Chris Greene '08, Brad Litchfield '09 and Matt Katz '11 set a team mark of 10:21.64 while placing third. During the New England Division III Championships at Coast Guard which concluded Sat., May 3, Grover took another triple jump title with his 47-1 effort. Lark also scored in the triple jump with his fifth-place performance while also taking fifth in the long jump, accounting for Wesleyan's 18 team points as the Cards finished 17th of 26 scoring teams. During the New England Open Championships Thurs.-Sat., May 8-10 at New Hampshire, Grover, Lark, Moody and the 4x800m relay squad of Chris Coleman '09, Foster, Litchfield and Sean Watson '08 combined for 17 team points, allowing Wesleyan to finish 18th. The 4x800m relay shattered the team record set in 1976 (7:52.25) by placing fifth with a time of 7:46.30 ; Moody was seventh in the javelin (185-0) ; and Grover (2nd, 47-9 1/4) and Lark (6th, 46-5 1/4) placed in the triple jump. Grover's jump was his best of the season. A bit earlier in the Little Three meet at Amherst April 19, Grover cleared 6-4 3/4 in the high jump, 21-0 in the long jump and 46-8 1/4 in the triple jump to become a three-event victor for the Cardinals. Grover also added a second-place finish in the 110m hurdles to collect 26 team points as Wesleyan totaled 117 on the afternoon, good enough the beat host Amherst (82) but not enough to overtake Williams (182). Grover was honored by the NESCAC as its Field Performer of the Week. Wesleyan also got a first-place showing from Moody in the javelin (175-7 3/4) as more than half of the squad's point came from the eight field events. Dan Manuyag '09 was second in the 100m dash and third in the 200m event to lead the Cardinals on the track. The last action of the year took place at Wisconsin-Oshkosh Thurs.-Sat., May 22-24 where triple jumpers Grover and Lark competed in the NCAA Division III Championships. Neither Grover, seeded seventh in the country, nor Lark, seeded 15th, qualified for the finals as they placed 10th and tied for 12th during the preliminaries.
