Ben grappled his way to an 11-6 decision over Wozniak to advance to the quarter-final round. In the quarter-finals, Ben faced Justin Bonitateas (College of New Jersey). Hoover narrowly defeated Bonitateas with an 8-7 decision, advancing him into the semi-final. In the semi’s, Ben took on No. 1 seeded Tim Palmer ((UW LaCrosse). Once again, Ben prevailed with a 6-2 decision over Palmer, advancing to the National Championship bout. In the Championship bout, Ben matched up with the No. 2 seeded Tyler Burkle (Coe College). Ben Hoover captures NCAA DIII Regional Title, advances to NCAA National Tournament!

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Maranatha’s outstanding 165 pounder Ben Hoover blazed through the field at the NCAA DIII Great Lakes Regional Tournament, hosted by Saint Johns College. Hoover and Greg Taylor were the only Crusaders to experience wins in the tournament, but despite their own personal losses, the entire Maranatha team rallied around Ben as he swept through the field en-route to the Regional title by defeating Ben Youel of North Central College with a pin at 2:27. Youel is the only person to have defeated Hoover this season. The other Crusader who experienced victory was Greg Taylor as he pinned Chad Asato (Pacific University) in just 34 seconds in his attempt to wrestle back. Taylor then lost by Technical Fall to Greg Horn (Elmhurst College) to end his chances at advancing to the finals. Maranatha head coach Scott Hawes is thrilled with the success of his entire team, not just Hoover. “We have worked hard all season, and have seen significant improvement with this group of men…several, actually all but two of them didn’t even wrestle in high school, but began their career at Maranatha. We are proud of all the team…and the team can take credit for pushing Ben to this level. With the help of assistant coach Trevor Hall, and Maranatha’s former coach Ben Peterson, we have achieved this level of success.” Hoover will compete at the NCAA DIII National Wrestling Tournament in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 7-8 at the US Cellular Center. Collegiate teams create the new Northern Wrestling Association

Milwaukee, Wis. – The four wrestling programs from the Lake Michigan Conference announce the forming of the new Northern Wrestling Association. The Association is comprised of Concordia University-WI, Maranatha Baptist Bible College, Lakeland College, and Milwaukee School of Engineering. The history for these four collegiate wrestling programs goes back to 1994 with the inaugural season of wrestling in the Lake Michigan Conference. While members of the LMC, Concordia (WI) held seven conference titles, including last year, MSOE has won five titles and Maranatha Baptist, one. The four schools wanted to continue their wrestling tradition despite not having a conference to join at this time. Concordia University-WI, Maranatha Baptist Bible College and Lakeland College are also members of the new Northern Athletics Conference (NAC). MSOE is currently a provisional member of the NAC and will compete as a full voting member in the 2007-2008 school year. Currently, the Northern Athletics Conference does not recognize wrestling as a conference sport. All four schools will face each other in dual matches during the season, leading up to the NWA tournament to be held, Saturday, Feb.10, at Lakeland College. The teams will continue to compete at the Great Lakes Regional on Saturday, Feb. 17, with eyes set on the NCAA Division III championships to be held Friday, March 2 in Dubuque, Iowa.
