Battle-Tested Youth Football Plays, Drills & Coaching Tips.

Football Training Drills - Circle Drill

07-02-2008 I got the inspiration for this football coaching tip from Ted, one of my subscribers. It includes some fresh ideas for football training drills. Try it out and let me know what you think!Football Training Drills and TipsFrom Ted…We call this football drill–a circle drill. After a proper hitting progression and usually about 3 or 4 weeks into practice, we ask the boys to get in a group of 5, with one guy on the middle and the other 4 in a square pattern around him. Each of the boys, including the one in the middle are asked to “chug” their feet and stay with low hips and head up (in an athletic stance). The boy in the middle spins every one or two seconds to face someone else in the group. When the coach whistles, whoever the guy in the middle is facing, he goes and blocks until the whistle blows again. (He drives his opponent backwards until the second whistle.) He then returns to the middle, until he has made 4 blocks and then we switch the middle man.We use this football drill once per week, usually Tuesday of a Friday game week and it usually produces some fairly intense contact.Technorati Tags: football coaching tip, football training drills, football drill, football Link To This Entry | Email This Entry | Related Entries: Youth Football, Football Coaching

Maine Youth Football - Tip Drill

06-27-2008 Phil, one of my subscribers, wrote in to suggest these football drills he uses with his Maine youth football team. Keep ‘em coming.Maine Youth FootballFrom Phil…We are a new high school program (this will be our 4th season) and have about 30 - 40 players at the most every year, so we have kids playing both sides of the ball. Some of our receivers have been on the “D” line. Kids could end up playing anywhere so everyone does this football drill. We do a “Tip Drill” (it’s probably nothing new to you veteran football coaches). We have kids in lines of 6 - 7 kids.A football coach is facing them with ball in hand. The first player starts running towards coach as he’s “Passing” the ball. The player tips the ball so that it goes backwards to the next player jogging behind him. The first player runs to the back and it continues until we go through twice without the ball dropping. Then we change it up:The player will tip the ball behind him to his left or right or straight back. We have players in all 3 spots and let the “Tipper” decide where to tip the ball (like if your playing CB and the FS is coming into help on the pass). So he’ll tip it or bat it towards the other player and that would be our “Tip / Interception Drill”.It’s a football drill that works for us, being so young. It teaches the players to keep their hands up, helps with reaction and keeps the players focused. Also with the “Tip / Interception Drill”, after the ball is “intercepted” we turn into offense and run like you would during a game, block on air, Wedge up if you can, Etc.Technorati Tags: football drills, Maine youth football, football drill, football, football coach Link To This Entry | Email This Entry | Related Entries: Football Drills, Youth Football

Fun Football Drills for Kids - Balloon Toss

06-23-2008 This is one of the fun football drills for kids that one of my subscribers sent to me. Try this out with your team this summer and reap the benefits!Fun Football Drills for KidsFrom Scott…Coaching in a youth football league is fun and challenging. Each year we try to find new things to keep our youth interested in coming to football practice and working hard. We always try to reward our boys with something fun to end the practice with.We do our conditioning at the end of practice and it is always a challenge motivating the boys. I want them to work hard, see results and stay motivated and learn to love this great game. One of the fathers asked if they could bring water balloons to practice. His idea was during ladders to arm all of the fathers with the balloons, place them on the side lines and let them throw at the players, while they ran. This was a instance hit.Our boys ran harder than they ever had. Once you got hit you were out. Last boy not to be hit was the winner. We went through this football drill a number of times and the boys never realized that they had run more than they ever had.We use this each year to motivate our players, telling them if they will work hard and the coaches see success we will reward them with the balloon toss. This gives them something to work for, gives them a goal and rewards them for their hard work, not to mention cooling them off on a hot August night.Technorati Tags: fun football drills for kids, football, football practice, football drill Link To This Entry | Email This Entry | Related Entries: Youth Football, Football Practice

Football Tackling Drills - Bull Rush

06-20-2008 I’ve gotten a whole bunch of requests for football tackling drills over the past few days. Here’s a football drill that Jim sent in.Football Tackling DrillsFrom Jim…Here is a tackling/game football drill I use often during the season. Its called “Bull Rush“.Basically, it’s sprints with tackling. Object of the game is to be the last player standing at the end.Coaching Point is to work on open field tackling. By the book. Tackling legs.“Square off” a 40 yard area with cones.2 end lines and 2 out of bounds.Line your team up at one the line at one end, like they were lining up for sprints.Choose someone to be ‘in the middle’. On that player’s command (yells BULL RUSH), the entire team sprint to the other end. It is the player in the middles job to tackle someone before they make it to the other end. (Runners MUST stay in bounds.) When he does, the player he tackled stays in the middle with him while the team lines back and goes again on his command “BULL RUSH”, while the two try to make tackles. And this is repeated until all the players have been tackled and end up in the middle, or just one is left standing. The last player to make it through without getting tackled is the winner and starts the next ‘game’ in the middle. You can play this as many times as you have time for.POINTS: First and foremost, this IS a sprint. Don’t let anyone ‘jog’ or TRY to get tackled. Secondly, don’t let them ’street tackle’ . No by the shirt, or by the head, or jump on someones back. Good crisp tackles. Wrap up, drive through. This is a chance to see how quick, and tough your runners are. Or maybe find a runner in the rough or a fullback. And it’s a chance to see how good your tacklers are. This is a game the kids love and will ask you to play often. I use it as a ‘reward’ for a good football practice. It teaches them good tackling form in the open field. It’s a football conditioning drill that makes running sprints at the end of practice a lot more fun. And it teaches teamwork. There is some strategy involved in this game.Technorati Tags: football tackling drills, football, football drill, football practice, football conditioning drill Link To This Entry | Email This Entry | Related Entries: Football Drills, Football Practice — Next Page » Pages: Home Football Coaching Resources Categories: Football Drills (RSS) Football Plays (RSS) Youth Football (RSS) Football Practice (RSS) Football Coaching (RSS) Football Tips (RSS) Recent Entries: Football Training Drills - Circle Drill Football Conditioning Programs - Agility Drill Maine Youth Football - Tip Drill Fun Football Drills for Kids - Balloon Toss Football Tackling Drills - Bull Rush Drills for Football - Pursuit Drill Conditioning for Youth Football Football Coaching Drills - Bust A Move Offensive Football Drills Football Practice Drills - Lock and Load Just use your first name & valid e-mail address as your password: First Name: Email: Recent Comments Archives: July 2008 June 2008 May 2008 April 2008 March 2008 February 2008 January 2008 December 2007 November 2007 October 2007 September 2007 August 2007 July 2007 June 2007 May 2007 April 2007 March 2007 February 2007 January 2007 December 2006 Feeds: Entries (RSS)
