Also thanks must go to Blumantle and the North West Point-to-Point Club who helped by Sponsoring some of the expenses for the Dinner and also to the various people and businesses that contributed raffle and auction prizes that enabled us to give something back to these very worthy Charities that have helped people within our sport in the past. Pointers can be sponsored under new scheme A new scheme introduced by the Point To Point Authority (PPA) allows for horses to be commercially  sponsored for the first time.  Owners can receive £450 per horse in exchange for a sponsoring  company's name appearing in the racecard and (optionally) its logo being displayed on the horse's paddock sheet. The scheme has been introduced to help owners offset their training and running costs, and a registration levy is being used to underwrite a national marketing plan for the sport. Guidelines issued by the PPA draw a distinction between the new plan and the existing BHA Owners' Sponsorship Scheme, so Hunter 'Chases are excluded and there are no VAT considerations. Heather Kemp, the PPA's independent member  who has developed the new scheme, believes the advent of commercial sponsorship will inject vital new funds into the sport. "Costs have been soaring and many owners have been hard pressed to keep going. While there have been concessions over syndication and partnerships, and individual events and race series have attracted sponsorship, the new scheme puts money right into the grass roots where it is most needed." Under the new rules (effective from November 1st and downloadable from www.pointtopoint.co.uk) any one business can sponsor up to five horses, although no horse can be sponsored more than once. No arrangement will be recognised unless registered with Weatherbys via Hunters' Certificates. A registration fee of £45 applies, deductible from the £450. Logos must not be larger than 32sq.in (206 sq.cm) and company names are restricted to 45 characters. This is an exciting new venture with the Burton Hunt staging their meeting on Sunday 1st February 2009 and the Blankney Hunt following on Sunday 1st March 2009. Prior to 2009 the Burton Hunt Point to Point was held at Market Rasen racecourse and the Blankney Hunt Point to Point was held at Garthorpe, Leicestershire. Both Point to Points were held at the Carholme racecourse at Lincoln until 1991. Entrance to the North Carlton course is via Gate 6 of the Lincolnshire Showground Directions: A1500 off Tillbridge Lane, 1 mile north of Lincoln Address: Lincolnshire Showground, Grange-de-Lings, Lincoln LN2 2NA Light refreshments will be available. 2008/9 Fixtures Burton Hunt on Sunday 1st February 2009Blankney Hunt on Sunday 1st March 2009 Looking forward to a Great season ahead The UK Point-to-Point season begins this year on November 30 th. By the time it finishes on 13 th June 2009 with the Torrington Farmers fixture at Umberleigh, 212 meetings will have taken place (weather permitting) on 117 different courses. There are two new venues for 2009 - Whitfield, a new location for the Grafton’s meeting on May 17 th, and North Carlton, to be used by the Burton (Feb 1 st)and the Blankney (March 1 st) in place of Market Rasen racecourse. With Weston Park now not being used as a venue, the Albrighton fixture on January 25 th has been moved to Bangor and the Meynell meeting on May 24 th now takes place at Garthorpe. There are seven fixtures taking place before the turn of the year, including a revival of the Thames Valley Club at Tweseldown on December 7 th and a change of date for the Farmers Bloodhounds at Dunthrop which now runs on December 14 th. Robert Waley-Cohen, chairman of the Point-To-Point Authority (PPA), said: “The sport is coping very well indeed in the face of any number of tough external trends, not least the weather. There is a solid demand and growing interest for country racing from participants and spectators alike, and we expect the forthcoming season to provide great sport and an exciting spectacle for all involved.” "Open Forums" The Point-to-Point Stewards’ Seminars are being held at the end of October, and following each of these there will be an open forum so as to give people the opportunity to come and see how things have moved on since the creation of the PPA in July. PPA chairman Robert Waley-Cohen will deliver a presentation and chair a question and answer session. People wishing to attend are asked to contact the PPA office on info@p2pa.co.uk or 01285 841920. Having retired from race riding in 2007, Tabitha still rides and hunts with the Blackmore and Sparkford Vale. Based in the West Country, Tabitha heads the Health and Safety and Regulatory team for Bristol solicitors, Veale Wasbrough. Robert Waley-Cohen, PPA chairman, said: “Tabitha brings an enthusiasm for the sport and a primary aim to encourage greater involvement in the sport by participants and spectators alike. Richard Russell takes over as the Jockey Club representative on the Board when Andrew Merriam, the current incumbent, steps down. The changes become effective on January 1 st, 2009. Steven Astaire joins the Board as Chairman of the Point-to-Point Secretaries Association (PPSA) having taken over from Robert Killen. The other three Board members are Simon Claisse representing the Point-to-Point Owners’ & Riders’ Association (PPORA), Michael Felton representing the Master of Foxhounds Association (MFHA) and Heather Kemp, as an independent. For further information, contact The Point-to-Point Authority Limited on 01285 841920 or info@p2pa.co.uk £1,000 on offer at Tweseldown Club meeting on 4th January 2009 There will be £1,000 on offer for the Mens Open race at the Tweseldown Club meeting, which will be run in memory of Philip Scouller, who recently lost his battle with cancer. Philip rode his first winner in 1968 and rode 116 winners in all, 60 of these at Tweseldown, making him the winning most jockey at the course. He was also the Chairman of Tweseldown Club and a steward at various point-to-points and at Fontwell Park. Thank you for a fantastic evening! On Friday 29 th August there was a Dinner and Dance held at Sandy Park, Exeter Rugby Stadium in aid of The Injured Jockeys Fund, Sarah Gaisford and Wayne Burton. The aim of the evening was to raise as much money as possible. Robert Webb-Bowen did an amazing job as our compare. Followed by an entertaining speech from Richard Pitman. Andrew Elliott from Brightwells Auctioneers conducted a fantastic live auction of top National Hunt jockeys and Graham Piper – local jockeys valet. This created a real buzz in the room as the jockeys strutted their stuff trying to out do each other. With Cornish bred David Davis having the top bid of £1100. The final line up of jockeys included: Paddy Brennan, David Dennis, Tom O’Brien, Daryl Jacob, Nick Scholfield, Graham Piper – all of whom donned collars, cuffs and smothered in baby oil! Richard Johnson, Choc Thornton and Sam Thomas were unable to attend but all agreed to be auctioned in their absence. “Daryl Jacob and Tom O’Brien both said on Saturday at Newton Abbot Races it was enormous fun and a great honour to have helped raise money for their less fortunate colleagues.” The Silent Auction ran throughout the night proving to be very popular with people watching over their bids right to the very end. Music was provided by Bristol based, Spectrum, who had everyone up and dancing till the small hours. A final fund raising amount will not be known for a couple of weeks as there are monies to be collected and donations are still coming in. The organising committee would like to thank the endless number of people who have assisted, donated and particularly the sponsors and those who attended the evening for making it such a success. We are all very grateful!! Photos from the event can be found at http://gallery.me.com/edmund_hamilton. Anybody who wishes to make a donation to the evening can obtain more information from Hilary Hornby on 01364-653408. Eligibility of Horses for the 2008\2009 Point-to-Point Season What's New?
