PS: I'm such a maniac that I want to know the word"weightlifting" (USA, GBR) in alllanguages. So far I have for the different countries; "gewichtheffen"inBelgium and the Netherlands,  "gewichtheben" inGermany. In Poland the magic word is "podnoszenieciężarów" while In Slovakia they call it "vzpieračská"and in Czech "vzpírání".The Russian translation shouldbe "Тяжёлаяатлетика", pronounced as "tjascholaja athletika" andthe Bellarusian "цяжкаяатлетыка". In Latvian language "svarcelšana", but inLithuanian it's called"sunkioji atletika" and in Estonian it is "tōstespord".In Swedish  it looks like "tyngdlyftning",in Norvegian "vektlofting",in Danish "vægtløftning" and inFinnish "painonnosto".Italians use  "pesistica"and the French "haltérophilie". In Portugese "halterofilismo" but in Brasil theycall it "levantamento de pesos".In Spain it is  "halterofilia"but in South America they talk about "levantamienta de pesas".The Greek equivalent is "άρσηβαρών, pronounced Arsi Varon" and theTurkish is "halter".  News:Here you will find the most recentresults from (or links to)all kinds of Weightlifting Championships:from national to European and WorldChampionships. But also the updated sections will be listed here. Olympische DroomTom Goegebuer on National BelgianTV, every monday on Eén from 12th of May, at 20h35 in the "Olympic Dream" !2008-06-27: Official IWF list of doping offenders 2008  and 11 new cases in Bulgaria!* 40 athletes have already been suspended in 2008, and the names are published. TheIWF also announced that they can't withdraw olympic quota fromcountries wthat produced positive doping results, because it wasn't a confirmed and voted rule by the IOC.This is bad newsfor the individual athletes waiting for an Olympic ticket, cause thesetickets could have been reallocated to them.(Alreadyit is very hard to qualify as an individual when the main qualificationis done through team rankings), but IWF seems to put pressure on thecountries to withdraw (partially) from the Olympics, which is a veryimportant sign.* 8 men and 3 women of the BulgarianNational squad delivered positive samples in an out of competitioncontrol and the federation would withdraw from Olympics. Bulgaria had 2starting places for women and the maximum of 6 starting places for men.News   2008-06-12: Olympic news Accordingto the Greek radio, Greece would be allowed to send lifters to theOlympics eventhough 5 men and 6 women tested positive in out ofcompetition controls. They will have to pay a fine to IWF. Normally theIWF fixed 50.000 USD pro positive case, but the total fine would be limited to 400.000 USD. The case will be officiallydealt with in the IWF congress during the Junior World championships in Colombia from 14th-21st of June. Before delivering the positive tests Greece had earned 8 startingplaces at the Olympics (5 for men and 3 for the women).Because nearly all of their toplifters will be suspended, the Greeks would only send 3 men and 1 woman to the Olympics. If confirmed this would leave two extra olympic places for men and women to be reallocated.Ifan NOC chooses not to use all qualification places obtained, or ifindividual qualification places cannot be allocated, the qualificationplaces concerned shall be reallocated by the IWF with consideration tothe Olympic Qualification Ranking List.By 30 June 2008, the IWF will confirm the reallocation of unused quota positions.Thiswould leave an opportunity for lifters from smaller countries thatdidn't get a team qualification and also failed to get an dividualplace by being ranked in top 15 (top 10 for Women) on the Olympicqualification list.Another question is wether positive lifters areremoved from these qualification lists (which would be logical causethey can not be qualified). So far I heard following lifters would have earned an individual ticket:women:Ruth Kassirye (Norway -58/-63kg), Cocos Roxana (Romenia -58), RomelaBegaj (Albania -58), Weili Yu (Honkong -53), Genny Pagliaro (Italy-48), and Spain has to decide between Juan Estefania (-48) and LidiaValentin (-75) and Armenia between Melinel Daluzyan (-63 kg), NazikAvdalayan (69 kg) or Hripsime Khurshudyan (75 kg).men:Victor Scerbatis (Latvia +105), Saleem Jaber (Qatar +105), MinasidesDimitrios (Cyprus -69), Manual Minginfel (Micronesia -62), IbrahimAmirul Hamizan (Malasya, -56) and Hoang Anh Tuan (Vietnam -56),who istraining in Bulgaria with coach Stefan Tupurov. Itseems that not all individual places for men (8 men / 7 women) will befilled up so the remaining places will be allocated by the IWF withconsideration to the global interests of weightlifting.Further on a few wild cards (6 men/ 4 women) are also allocated end of june.Personally I really hope that I, as a silver medal winner at the European Championships, can get one of these last places. 2008-05-29: Doping cases : Tom Goegebuer Silver in -56Kg !!!!Inthe very strict dopingcontrols that have been conducted in the road toBeijing, already 41 weightlifters would have tested positive sinceJanuary. Not all names are published and not even all nations involved are known but what can be deducted from news going around: ARM 1 BUL 1 BIH 1 BLR 1 BRA 1 CHI 1 CUB 2 DOM 2 GRE 11 IRQ 4 IND 1 KSA 1 LBA 4 MDA 2 PAK 1 RUS 1   SEY1 SYR 1 VEN 3 *9 athletes gave a positive test on the PAN-American Games :BALDERA Yesenia, DOM -48 WomenFARIAS Leuzkis, VEN -69 Women NUNEZ Vanessa, VEN -69 WomenBELLORIN Claret, VEN -75 WomenSILVA Andreia, BRA -75 WomenDE LA ROSA Efrain, DOM, -56 MenOSORIO Victor, CHI, -105 MenSOTOLONGO Yoel, CUB, -105 MenMAKENCIE Joel, CUB, -105 Men* 4 lifters tested positive in the Asian Championships:IDREES Sarmad IRQ, -77 MenJOUGHILI Ahmad SYR, -94 MenALAIFURI Mohammed J., IRQ -105 MenRUBAIAAWI Ammar Y., IRQ, +105 Men* 4 lifters tested positive in the European Championships.JURIC Olivera, BIH (Bosnia)  -75kg WomenBOUR Igor, MDA (Moldavia) -56 kg MenPOPOV Vladimir, MDA -62 kg Men (already banned a first time a few years ago)MKRTCHYAN Artak, ARM +105 Men For me personaly it means that I get the Silver in snatch and total instead of the Bronze! *5 lifters in the African Championships:LOZAIQUE Brenda SEY, -63 WomenSHTEWI Abdelrahman LBA, -94 MenKHALIFA Abdalla LBA, -105 MenELADHEM Salaheddin LBA, -105 MenHSHAD Mustafa LBA, +105 MenBadpublicity for weightlifting once again, but on the other hand it isclear that the controls are effective and making the fight for theOlympic slots more honest. A sign...?Anyway in 2008, more than 30 years later,on 15th of April 2008, Tommanaged to snap a bronze medal in snatch and a bronze in total, also inItaly. Serge Reding competed in the heaviest bodyweight class, TomGoegebuer in the lightest (-56kg). A nice story and a great reward for Tom after 10 participations in arow at European Senior Championships!Unfortunately Tom couldn't make the total of  253kg that theBelgian Olympic Commitee asked in order to qualify for the olympics. After the starting weigths of 111 snatch and 133 clean and jerk, hewent for this total with 115 and 138 but missed leaving him with only244 kg total and a provisional 18th place on the Olympic qualificationworld rankinglist. TheseEuropean senior championships wereorganised in the Italian holiday town Lignano Sabbiadoro from14th till 22th of April. With140 kg total (62+78) she became 5th.  2008-03-08: German Bundesleague:Lastsaturday, 8th of March, the last round of the GermanBundesleaugue competitions took place. My German club KSV Hostenbach, and the opponent SV Germania Obrigheim II were sharing the lastposition in the second division Süd West, so it was a clear andstressing situation: defeat = degradation!  Ihad been in the training camp with the French team in Vittel and Iwasn't completely fresh, but nonetheless in a good shape and I weighedin at 59.7 kg. I had a perfect day in the snatch with 113 kg, 117 kgand a very good 119kg.The clean&jerk didn't go as planned. I started with 137 kg.With141 kg I had the impression that the barbell wasn't loaded equally onboth sides cause I was out of balance in the pull. Anyway, I catchedthe barbell very badly and came up heavily. It went black for my eyes, but I jerked it quite well but when I got my feet together "night came"and I fell down, just before the signal. No lift, bad luck. As weseemed to be certain to win the competition I asked for 142 kg and thistime it went really easy making me cautionless for the jerk. I didn'tconcentrate and missed it. The 256 kg total (that should have been atleast 260) were nonetheless good for 156 points. EventhoughObrigheim II succeeded in making there season's best with 598 points, Obrigheim-Hostenbach ended infavour of us y by also putting more than 20 points to ourprevious best till 621 points. The final ranking is a big relief toall, next season again Bundesleague II! 2008-02-23: German Bundesleague:On23th of  Februar I had to compete for KSV Hostenbach in the second division Süd West of the GermanBundesleague competition in the seventh round.  Lasttime we lost against Speyer with only two points, but this time Speyerwas reinforced be former Armenian Chakojan Rafik In last years EuropeanChampionships he was still competing for Armenia, but he gottheGerman citizenship like his clubmate Artyom Shaloyan. On topofthat they could also count on Armenian Amrean Hovhannes so it wasalready clear that we had no chance to win.Iquited the training camp in France shortly to compete andafter ahard trainingsweek I my energy was a bit low. I started with110snatch, and had to repeat my second attempt wit 114 kg to do it right. The clean and jerk went as planned with 133,138and 141 kg.  My total of255 kg at 60.7 kg bodyweight give me a reasonable 151 German Kilopoints and Hostenbach - Speyer, ended  in favour of Speyer with 637.8 - 583.1. 2008-02-16:BelgianClub Championships Thefirst round of the Belgian clubchampionships took place in Seraing. Teams consist of 3 athletes and the Sinclair points are added. The teamwith the highest score after three rounds is national champion. Myteam, Royal Olympic Ghent had 3 athleteslifting:  Chamoyan Hrajr, Bart Adins and junior BartVanthienen. Ourbest lifters Tom Van Thienen, Luc Lammens and I were all lifting inFrance at the same time so the goal was to end as close as possible tothe leader. BartAdins, came out of exams and had to be content with a for him moderate72 snatch and100 clean& jerk. His 172 kg total at 87.5 kg gave 200.13sinclairpoints.Our first year junior Bart Van thienen, 79.6.kg, made a new PBwith 71 kg snatch and 92 kg in the jerk.  His total addedanother200.13sinclair points. Hrajr Chamoyan made, nearly without training, asolid 105+120kg at 78.7 kg (277.99 sinclair). Our 679 sinclairpoints were, as expected, not enough to win the firstroundbut our second team did really well and ended 3rd with only 58.48Sinclair points distance from leader La Louvière. Results. 2008-02-16: French Club Competition 3:Inthe third round of the French Clubcompetition ASPTTLille could count on me to compete in the highest division N1A.Atthis home competition I weighed in at 60.7 kg and made a perfect row inthe snatch with 111, 115 and 118 kg.  In the clean I was stillstruggling a bit with the technics so I planned to lift moderately. Istarted with 135 and made a quite good 140 in the secondattempt.Though, not heavy at all I missed the clean of 142 kg, confirming thatI still have to work a bit on the clean and jerk. My 377.6 Sinclairpoints were good for the tenth place in the Sinclair overall ranking. TurkishSudas Benjamin made the highest score (418.99) followed closely byHennequin Benjamin (417,008).ASPTT Lille is now in 4th place in the clubranking, immediately behind AAJ BloisTwoother Belgian lifters from my club were also liftin in France. TheTournament took place in two women's (-53kg and +75 kg) and two men's (-56 kg and +105 kg) bodyweightcategories with international lifters competing in the A sessions andonly Chinese competitors in the B groups.Mostremarkable news is the come back of Mathias Steiner on theinternational stage. After his Olympic performance in the -105 kgclass for Austria in 2004 he has been waiting to get theGermanNationality. It took a little longer than expected but he made anoticed re-entry at nearly 140kg bodyweight with a good 193 kg snatchand 230 kg Jerk. * The first IWF-tournament of the year was the yearly Copenhagen Cup on19th of January.Lifters from Danmark, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Poland and Germanywere taking part. Results  2008-01-12: German Bundesleague:Aftera short rest,  I had to start in the firstcompetition of the year for KSV Hostenbach  of the German Bundesleaguecompetition.At59.8 kg my bodyweigth was still quite low and as the club had a smallhope to win the competition against Weinheim, I tried to lift maximum. With 6 good lifts till 112 snatch and 140 clean&jerk it wentverygood, but in the end my reasonable 152 points  didn't bring usvictory.Hostenbach-Weinheim ended 575.2points to 600.2 and we are still in a dangerous last but one positionin the second division Süd West.2007-12-15: German Bundesleague:On15th of  Decembre I did my last competition of the year for KSV Hostenbach in the second division Süd West of the GermanBundesleague competition.  Thiscompetition against Obrigheim was of extreme importance for my Germanclub, cause defeat could mean degradation at the end of the season, soeveryone was well prepaired. I also did an extra effort and losttwo kilo in sauna so my bodyweight was only 57.4 kg. As it was veryimportant to make a total I started low with 106snatch, and went on with easy 110 kg and 114 kg snatch. The clean and jerk went well with an easy 132,  and138 kg.Unfortunelaty I just couldn't get out of the squat with 142kg.  My total of252 kg give me a good 160 German Kilo points and we clearlywon the duel Hostenbach -Obrigheim (598.4 - 310.7) Competitionresults* The IWF World Cupfrom 28/11 till 1/12 in Apia on Samoa is atthe same time also Commonwealth and Oceania Championships. About 150 dopingtests have beendone on the World Championships resulting in about 10% positive cases. So we can estimate that if all 633 participants in the WorldChampionships would have been tested (245 women and 388 men) it wouldproabbaly result in about 63 positive cases. Knowingthat dopingtest don't have a detection rate of 100% (countries that usedoping knwo that they are going to be tested and they use drugs thatcan't be detected (or at least not always) so the real use of dopingmust be clearly more than 10%.Stilla long way to go in the doping fight, and new ideas to punish offendershave to developped. Some people think that it could be effective toban therepresentatives from recidiving countries from the executive commiteesand other positions in the international federations in order to ensurethat national antidoping programs are constructed efficientlyeverywhere. Personally, I believe that open information about positive cases ismaybe more efective. When countries come repeatedly in a bad news for dopingoffence at acertain moment the authorities of these countries start to care aboutthe negative publicity and start there own internal fight. It is also important that doping use gets a negative image, whichis not always the case in countries with a "doping culture".The pressure and influence of the media can not beunderestimatedin this, therefore the international and national federations should behave a policy of not hiding the positive cases. The GermanWeightlifting federation is one of the leading federations in thisaspect, publishing immediatley every lifter that has broken therules.   2007-11-17: Open BENELUXTournament (The Hague): I lifted threenational records in 56kg classTheNetherlands wanted to organise Benelux Championships 2007 (between BElgium&NEtherlandsand LUXemburg)but as there hasn't been an agreement yet between the three countriesabout the rules and mode of organisation? Belgium and Luxemburg call ittournament instead of championship. The invitation for the competitioncame very late (just 4 weeks before) and originally a highentryfee was planned. All of this lead to very few participants, sohopefully the agreement between the countries will be ready by nextyear! Mita Overvliet (organiser of the Thor Cup and winning the 69 kg classhere) invited female toplifter Ruth Kasirye from Norway and she made ainternational result of  250.7 Sinclair by doing her traininglifts of 90 snatch and 116 jerk (at 60 kg bodyweight). My club team was also present with very good performances.Bart Van thienen, our youth lifter made 185.6 Sinclair (62+85 at 74.5 kg bodyweight) missing his records with 69 and 90 kg.His junior brother Tom Van thienen took the second placeoverall with 300.2 Sinclair (114+140 at 85.6 kg bodyweight). Our Master lifter, Luc Lammens took the third place overall with 297.4Sinclair (110+140 at 84.5 kg bodyweight)And yes, I took the overall title of best lifter with 392.5 Sinclairand three (snatch&jerk and total) national records! After a diet of 8 weeks I got down to the 56 kg class, weighing only55.5 kg.I started with 109 kg followed by 113 kg. The third attemptwith115 kg was surprisingly high but I made a small technical mistake andthe barbell fell behind me in the end. The clean and jerk went fine with two good lifts, 132 kg followed by137 kg. The same mistake as a few weeks ago, straigthening my legs too fast, made me miss the last attempt with 140kg.Nonetheless my 250 kg is a very satisfying result of high internationallevel (4th place European championships 2007, 2nd 2006) and only 3kgbelow the Olympic limit demanded by the Belgian Olympic Committee andat this moment a 15th place on the Individual Olympic Qualification World rankinglist! So this result should be enough to get thesupport from the Belgian Olympic Committe and the gouvernemtssportssupport organ BLOSO. It turned outhowever that they had two foreigners lifting, which isn't allowed. Sosuddenly they were making 80 points less and there level was withinreach of my club so it promised to be a hard fight. My bodyweight was only 57.5 kg and after a hard trainingsweek I decidedto start low and try to make 6 good lifts. I started with 105snatch, and went on with easy 110 kg and 112 kg snatch. The clean and jerk was even easier with 125,131and 135 kg.  At that time we were still in front ofSpeyer. In the last attempt their Armenian athlete Hovhannes had to jerk 10kgmore to take them to the lead. He just succeeded so we lost with onlytwo points. My total of247 kg give me a good 155 German Kilo points but we the duel Hostenbach - Speyer, ended  in favour of Speyer (575.8 - 577.8)   2007-11-03:  Flemish championships and National MasterChampionships The championships of theDutch speaking part of Belgium were organized in Merelbeke My bodyweight was 58.7 kg and I just participated as a training. I didpower snatches till 100 kg and moderate heavy clean&jerks till137kg, still enough to become best lifter overall with 355.8 Sinclair. The second best lifter and best Master Overall was my trainingpartnerLuc Lammens. In the class till 85 kg he snatched 116 kg and jerked 142kg (307.32 Sinclair). The best youth lifter (till 16years) came also from our club KOG with189.2 Sinclair. Bart Van thienen made a personal best in the class till77kg with a 62 kg snatch and a 88 kg jerk. The jerk and the total werealso Flemish youth records.Andcoincidence or not, the best junior was also from our club. His olderbrother Tom Van thienen made 285.89 Sinclair with only two goodattempts, a snatch of 111kg and a jerk of 133 kg in the 85 kgclass. Best woman was Sarah De Coster who made a come back after a back injurywith 45 kg snatch and 70 kg jerk in the 53 kg class.2007-10-27: German Bundesleague:On27th of Octobre the third round of the German Bundesleague competitionswent on in several parts in Germany. As in previous years I'm competing for KSV Hostenbach in the second division Süd West. Istarted with my club against the club from Heinsheim, one of the strongest clubs in the second division. Hostenbach - Heinsheim, ended  to 581.2 - 600.2 points. My bodyweight was only 58.5 kg.  I missed 112kgsnatch in thefirst attempt but proved with my second attempt that it was just asmall mistake and 116kg in the third also was good. In the theclean and jerk I made two perfect and easy attemptswith 135and  140 kg. I used other knee wraps and wanted to try if ithelped to put them tighter for my last attemptwith 144kg. It didn't work out as I thought, cause it made my straighten my legs tofast and the bar slid down of my shoulders in the squat. Nonethelessmy total of256 kg delivered me a good 160 German Kilo points which places myprovisionally inthe 5th place overall (in the whole GermanBundesleaugue).  ThorCup 2008The2008 edition of the Thor Cup (seereport 2007) will be an open tournament counting for the IWFworld ranking list and is planned between 15 and 19th of may (IWFCalender 2008).Theorganiser MitaOvervliet has asked me to inform everybody that there will be anunpreceded price money of 1500 USD in every class (for the first threein every of the 8 male and 7 female bodyweightclasses,probably 800 dollars for the 1st, 500  forthe secondand 200 for the third). On top of that there will be money for the bestlifters on sinclair points.Officialinvitations will be sent later and I'll put a copy on my website.  Deceatfrom Azerbeidjan team?AsPolish newssite published, Olympiclifter Alan Naniyev, brought some schocking newsfor APA-sport.He claims that he has lifted in last years world championships with afals pasport for Azerbeidjan, and is mentioning the possibillity ofanother lifter (that would also have gained medals as a junior, whilenot anymore a junior). If it this can be proven it might have consequences for theolympic qualification of Azerbeidjan. In Memoriam Khachatur Kyapanaktsyan (ARM)Accordingto the newspapers, Khachatur Kapanakstyan, multiple medal winneron European and World Championships and a world record of 171.5 snatchin 76kg class, and coach for Armenia in the last years has been killedin a car accident just after the World Championships. He was not only known as a great athlete, but also as a funny andpleasant guy. The weightlifting community will certainly miss him.  2007-10_08:_Junior European ChampionshipsSanta Cruz-Tenerife 2007From 9-13th the bestof European's juniors will lift in Tenerife. You will be able to find the results on the officicial website (problemswith Firefox browser to read the page!)2007-10-01: WorldSenior Championships (Chiangmai ,Thailand 16 -26th of September)have ended ! -Read  my personal photoreporton these world championships.  I made a very dissapointing result wit 268 kg totaland a 27th place.-The main team qualifications have been made also and the countries whocan send 6,5,4 and 3 male athletes to the Olympics are known as well asthe countries that can send 4, 3 and 2 female lifters. Qualification list men, Qualification list female. In the continental Championships next year some countries that didn'tget any quota can still earn a maximum of two places forthe maleand 1 (2 in Europe) for the female. (Qualification rules). Athletes from "weak" weightliftingcountries without any places can earnan exceptional ticket by being in top 15 of a special worldranking list1 athlete pro country. It is a little bit weird that the IWF hasn't already published theIndividual world ranking qualification lists yet. As I have to qualifymyself by being in the top 15 I made the lists for the -56 kg and the-62 kg and in -56 kg class a 15th place is now 249 kg total and in-62kg it comes to 280kg. - I did a little statisticson the results of the last three pre-olympic qualification worldchampionships...Even though these WC had very high level and many participants, theAthens 1999 records in participation were not matched. In the men's competition 297 lifters from 59 countries took part(compared to Athens 345 lifters from 63 countries). 208 femalelifters from 47 countries fought for Olympic qualification (compared to231 lifters from 39 countries in Athens 1999). The trend of continuously higher levels of the female lifters seems toslow down a bit. The statistics show that the level of the last two pre-olympic worldchampionships is comparable (as well in the upper regions asin the lower):Chiang Mai2007-48-53-58-69-75+75Place1214219238276286319Place2196213237271281319Place3195211227244278281Average(1-3)201.7214.3  234.0263.7 281.7306.3Place10180193208225226255Vancouver2003-48-53-58-69-75+75Place 1200222,5225270272,5300Place 2190222,5217,5262,5262,5290Place 3187,5217,5210257,5252,5277,5Average(1-3)192,5220,8217,5263,3262,5280,6Place 10167,5187,5200227,5240255Athens 1999-48-53-58-69-75+75Place 1192,5215235247,5247,5285Place 2185202,5230232,5242,5280Place 3185197,5222,5232,5240252,5Average(place 1-3)187,5205,0229,2237,5243,3262,5 Place 10172,5185190215222,5232,5In the men's divisions we can see that the top results are considerablylower than in 1999 and a bit lower than in 2003, probably pointing tothe effect of WADA.  Interesting to notice is that the midsection resultsareabout the same as in 2003 and the places around the 30st place are evenfrom the same level as in 1999, pointing out that the density of theresults is higher than ever. A natural lifter has quite regularprogresses. In the starting years of a junior lifter a progress of 20kg in a year (without changing bodyweight) is quite good but once on alevel of a World Championship such a progress is very rare. Seeingseveral lifters from a country progressing with 20 to even 40kg in lessthan a year is very questioning. Similar, performing 10 kg less thanbefore is very normal, but some lifters seem to drop down from time totime with 30 to 40 kg total without any visible reason....In the world championships of2005 one getsa 10th place with 257 kg total, in 2007 the same total only reaches fora 32nd place. Ofcourse the world championships in 2007 are moreimportant, but wasn't anyone of those twenty potential liftersinterested to be in that top ten??? 5th place was 286 kg total, thisyear only 11th.  There are ofcourse other factorsthat can explain, but all together it is clear that doping use has notdissapeared yet. Idon't want to put my belovedsport in a bad ligth but I think that it has been proven that othersports suffer the same "desease" and the worst thing that could happenis what happened to cycling in the "Tour de France"...It is better to continously fight against it and regularly get somepositve cases than having an enormuos scandal in the Olympics. BesidesI really want a more honest chance for the clean lifters. So I want to keep the debategoing on, inorder to get even more efficient dopingcontrols. I'm thinkingespecially of the surprise effect of the controls. It seems that evenhalf an hour can be sufficiently to manipulate ones urine, so leavingthe athletes out of sight or anouncing the doping control a littlebefore arrival won't have much effect. (One also has to think about thecountries were a visa is required to come, so that by applyingfor a visa the federations might be warnedalready....)    World Senior Championships - Chiangmai(Thailand) -  16 till 26th of SeptemberThese championships, dedicated to King Bhumibol's 80th birthday, are the 76th for Men and 19th for Women. This is the second Olympic qualification event andtherefore the number of participants will be extremely high.  Theinscription list is also pointing to a very dense level withas much as 281 females and 430 male lifters. (Remark that a few reserve lifters can't compete). In the 69 kg class men there are as many as 74 inscriptions!I will be lifting inthe 62 kg class as always (18th of September). The preparation has been extremely good and when everything goes rightI should be able to surpass my best total ever.Looking at the entrylist however, I can't be very confident to reach a superbplace.  Actually a top 12 is demanded by BLOSO in order to be sure tobesupported next year also and the Belgian Olympic Committee even wants atop 10 (or 285 total) for the Olympics butconsidering  my 23th place (on 58!) on thepreliminary listthis seemsto be a extremely hard task. However the final entry list can differ alot and in last year's world championships with a similar entry listthe tenth place turned out to be 280kg but a 15th place was still 276kg. One thing is sure, every missed attemp wil make an athlete slide down afew places and the difference between 2 good lifts and six good liftscan easily be ten places. So I can easily end in 20th positionbut top 12 is not impossible either.Anyway I'm planning not to think too much and just focus on my ownlifts and hope to be in the top 15 one pro country on the world rankinglist afterwards cause that is the international limit for my Olympicqualification and if I don't fullfill that one than there is no pointin thinking about other limits...    For results I advice to check out the IWFwebsite, the Eleiko news agency,  Marek'ssite and ofcourse the officialsite.Wish me luck!  Rezazadehnot going to the World Championships:SurprisinglyRezazadeh announced that he will not be able to lift in the WorldChampionships due to an injury after a car accident (originally hewould have said that he had no injury at all) according to a newsagency Dopingcases:-The WADA out of competition control have found a few positive B-samplesaccording to the  IWF website:ALB - 3 male liftersBLR - 1 female lifterMEX - 1 female lifterBUL - 1 female lifterIND - 1 male lifterBecause three Albanian lifters would havetestedpositive they risk a doping fine of 50.000 USD in order to be able toparticipate in the coming World championships and Olympic Games!According to TV-IBC news  the threeconcerned lifters would be Endri HAXHIHYSENI ,Isa BALIand MirjanaLOCI following WADA controls on 7th of july and 25th of August (testingpositive on testosterone).- The list of suspended lifters was also  updated  onthe  IWF website:Combined with the previuos WADA results this leaves BLR and ECU withtwo positive females, and EGY with two positive males, so one positivetest extra would also leave them with a 50.000 USD fine.- Kenyan weigthlifter David Obiero received a two year ban following apositive out -of competition test according to a newspaper. Germanworld championship qualification results:After the first qualification competitionthe Germans had a second test and the team forThailand will be AndreWinter und Artiom Shaloyan (69 kg), Renè Hoch (77 kg), Michael Böhm (85kg), Tom Schwarzbach (85 kg/Reserve), Jürgen Spieß and Rene Horn (94kg), Jörg Mazur (105 kg) and Almir Velagic (+105 kg). Nonetheless I made a promessing total of 270 kgtotal at a bodyweight of 62.6 kg. I made two good snatch lifts, 118 and123. My head wasn't ready for 125kg and I made a pull with it.Inthe cleanI did eaqually with two good lifts  at 142 and 147 kg. Idecidednot to force and didn't try more.It gave me 381 sinclair points.- The results of the German test competition can be found on: Eleiko news  Dopingcases:The list of IWF suspended competitors can be found on IWF website. On the All African Games in Algiers three lifters would have testedpositiveAll African Games in Algiers in weightlifting: - Blassed Udoh (NGR, -48kg women, 3rd place)- Hadiza Zakae (NGR, -75 kg women, 1st place)- Botuwa Menyakoko (COB, -94 kg Men ,6th place. The results of these African games can be found here WorldChampionships Juniors:Theofficial site has some informationbut results can be checked on the IWFsite. Competitionsresults:- Small Nations Tournament2nd of June Belgian team (Tom Goegebuer, Luc Lammens, Nicky Van Wemmel, Tom Vanthienen)  reachedsecond place in the open Small nations tournament. Tom Van thienen made a new national junior snatch record with 114 kg.I lifted 117+143 kg  at a bodyweight of 62.2 kg which gave me373.77 sinclair. The tournament was won by Cyprus.Results- Belgianchampionships 26th of may: resultsI became overall champion with 115+135 at a bodyweight of 61.4 (362.8473sinclair)- 4´th International Eleiko Austrian Women´sGrand Prix 2007  (Austria) from 18-19th of may:Ruth Kasireye from Norway won the tournament with 250.5 Sinclairpoints, beating the Austrian Heidi Neubacher (227 sinclair). - Finland won the 2nd Tor Cup(Iceland) 18th of mayThe competition setup is a special formula to promote thesport in Nordic countries. The concept came from David Goldstrom and the organisation is done byMita Overvliet.Five teams from Norway,Sweden, Iceland, Denmark and Finland have tofight for the title by making the highest total.  Each teams consists of three lifterswith a maximum totalbodyweight of 280 kilo (a "lightweight", "middleweight" and a"heavyweight" lifter). In this way the public can easily see which teamis on the winning hand. The competition itself is organised in a largeshopping mall and is broadcasted on the Icelandic television. The bestteam received 3000 Euro and all the other teams also receivedmoneypricesI have been helping to build up the platform and I competed so I have anice and  informative photoreport.- Finals of the German Bundesleague 2006-2007 12thof may:   Samswegen won the competion clearly with 977.2 kilopointsfor Obrigheim (960.6), and Chemnitz (800.2). Results 2007-04-27:  Asian ChampionshipsThe 19th Women's and 38th Men's Asian Cahmpionships took place inTai-an, China. Most remarkable was the setting of three World records jerk in thefemale field by Chinese women (-48kg 120 jerk, 53 kg 129 jerk, -63 kg141 jerk). The big gap between the snatch and the jerk seems to begeneral for the Chinese women, pointing out an exceptionalstrength.  2007-04-22:  Final round of German Bundesleague competition My club KSV Hostenbach was still in the last but oneposition in the second Bundesleaugue divisionSüd-West, and a defeat against Ladenburg with more than18 points wouldlead to a degradation to third league. Only three days after my European championships I wasn't tokeenon lifting but I had no choice than to help my German club. My bodyweight was 62.8 kg. I made a fairly easy 112 kg snatch and then missedsurprisingly twice with 115 kg (or wasn't it sosurprisinglyafter the post EC party :-). After the snatch we had a 13 pointsadvantage but when one of our lifters got injured in the warm up forthe jerk all looked suddenly very negative. Instead of starting with130 kg, i decided then to start 140, followed with 145 kg.  Ievencleaned 148 kg quite well but I lacked energy to finish thejerk. My 145kilopointswere second best of the evening, in the end it didn't lead ustothevictory. The competition Hostenbach-Ladenburg ended556.7to 563 points. This left Ladenburg and Hostenbach each with 1 competion won in thisseason, but Hostenbach having a higher average score and thus avoidingdegradation! End score Bundesliga Südwest Nonetheless , KSV Hostenbach made the 19th best club result in all Germany this season. In the overallrankingI ended as 16th best lifter in the Bundesleague season with 160kilopoints.  2007-04-22:  European Championships PhotoReportFrom 15th till 22ththe 86th  Men's European championships and 20thwomen's  competitions were organized in France.  The results can be found onthe  website from the organizingcommittee  These championships were my 9 thEuropean senior championships. I had a normal competition (272 kg total) but my 11th place was quitedissapointing. Sarah De Coster lifted inher first senior Championships You can find Sarah's report on her website   2007-03-31: 7th round of German Bundesleague competitionMyclub KSV Hostenbach is still in the last but one positionin the second Bundesleaugue divisionSüd-West, so a victory against Weinheim was desirable.  My bodyweight was 64.0 kg (after a meal) and less than 3 weeks from theEuropean Championships,I didn't really want to force.  I made two goodsnatch liftstill 120 kg. I nearly snatched 124 but I didn't lock my arm properlyand lost it. I made three easy jerks till 145 kg.  My 150kilopointswere second best of the evening, but in the end it didn't lead us tothevictory. The competition Heinsheim-Hostenbach ended588.4to 603 points. 2007-03-24:  Finals of the  French club competition  Only one week aftermy last competition I started again for ASPTT Lille in the first division, were 9 teams arefighting for the title of strongestclub.  Ihad two good snatch lifts, 118 and 122 but missed 124kg. In the cleanand jerk I started 140, but I lost my balance a bit and had tomake a step in the squat. I jerked the weight without problem butprobably something moved in my back. I cleaned 146 easily but whilecoming up I felt a sudden pain in the back and dropped the weight. Istopped the competition immediately to take no risk.My bodyweigth was 63.6 kg bodyweight, so i made 134.8French pointsand 370.65 sinclair points which put me in 11th position in France Individual ranking. We ended 5th place in the final  ranking with 445 points on theaverage.World Champion Dabaya Vencelas made a superb 147+190 at a merebodyweight of  72.9 kg  2007-03-17: 6th round of German Bundesleague competitionMyclub KSV Hostenbach is still in the last but one positionin the second Bundesleaugue divisionSüd-West, so a victory against Weinheim was desirable.  My bodyweight was 63.0 kg and less than 5 weeks from the European Championships,I expected to bring a lot better performance than in the previuoscompetitions. And indeed, I made three good snatch lifts till 122 kg.As I'm still not sure how much my knee tendon can take I wasn'tplaanning to clean more than 145 kg. After my second jerk with 142 kghowever we were 10 kg behind with only two lifters from my team with alast lift. So I was kind of obliged to take 147 kg. This weight didn'tpose me any problems either so I totalled 269 kg. My 157 kilopointswere also best of the evening, but in the end it didn't lead us to thevictory. Wen the last lift from the competition from teammate Panchevwith 176 kg failed the competition Weinheim-Hostenbach ended 595to 586 points.2007-03-11: BelgianClub Championships  Thesecond round of the Belgian clubchampionships took place in Seraing. Teams consist of 3 athletes and the Sinclair points are added. The teamwith the highest score after three rounds is national champion. Myteam, Royal Olympic Ghent had 5 athletes lifting: the firstteam LucLammens, Chamoyan Hrajr and Tom Van Thienen and inour second team Mussa Elmurzayev and schoolboy Bart Van thienen.Luc Lammenswill be competing next week so he took it easy with 110 snatchand130 clean& jerk. His 240 kg total at 83.5 kg gave 287.27sinclairpoints.Our junior Tom Van thienen, 89 kg, made a new PB snatch with110 kg and made a new Belgian junior jerk record with 136 kg making285.38sinclair points.  Hrajr Chamoyan made 105+125kg at79.8 kg (282 sinclair).Our854.65 sinclairpoints was, as expected, enough to win alsothe  second roundwith nearly 55 sinclair points over PS Zaventem and 133 sinclairover Seraing. Results. 2007-03-8:  European Union championships La Coruna(Spain) 2007-02-17:  3rd round of the French club competition Icompeted again for ASPTT Lille in thefirst division, were 9 teams are fighting for the title of strongestclub. Afterthis round we are one place higher on the ranking with the 5th place. We made 456.8 points, the 4rd best result in the 3rd round.I had three good snatch lifts, 112, 116, 118 kg. In the clean and jerkI did 132, 138 but I lost my balance with 141.The reason of this is ofcourse that I haven't done any squat cleans inthe last 8 weeks to let my knee injury heal.I'm pretty confident I 'll lift more soon.My bodyweigth was pretty high after a big lunch in a restaurant so with64.2 kg bodyweight, I only made a moderate  127.6 Frenchpointsand 359.7 sinclair points. Individual ranking2007-02-15: Doping News-New developments in doping controls:   From 2008 on dopingcontrols will reveal the use ofHuman Growth Hormons   In the futuredatabases from the athletes will be put in place with theirlevelsof certain substances that can change when taking      drugs.   So any changesin an athletesprofile will be suspect and can be examined further on.  -News came that at least three indian weightlifters tested positive onthe national championships (1, 2).  TheIWF just lifted a sanction on the Indian federation for previoussimilar problems. 2007-02-10: BelgianClub Championships  Thefirst round of the Belgian clubchampionships took place in Waregem. Teams consist of 3 athletes and the Sinclair points are added. The teamwith the highest score after three rounds is national champion. Myteam, Royal Olympic Ghent had 5 athletes lifting: the firstteam LucLammens, me and Tom Van Thienen and in our second teamChamoyan Hrajr and schoolboy Bart Vanthienen.Luc Lammenswill be competing next week so he took it easy with 110 snatchand127 clean& jerk. His 237 kg total at 84.3 kg gave 282.3sinclairpoints.Our junior Tom Van thienen, 88.5 kg, made a new PB snatch with109 kg but only succeeded in his first jerk with 124 kg making 271sinclair points. I only made a light training, recovering from the flewand knewing that I have to lift next week again in France. So I made amodest 100 snatch and 120 kg clean and jerk at a bodyweight of 61.7 kg.I added another 318 sinclair points. In our incomplete second team Hrajr Chamoyan made a solid 100+120kg at81.2 kg (267 sinclair). Ouryouth lifter Bram van thienen made his first competition with 4 goodlifts 50+70 at 77.5 kg bodyweight (149.55sinclair).Our 871 sinclairpoints was, as expected, enough to win the first roundwith nearly 80 sinclair points over PS Zaventem and 153sinclairover Seraing. Our second team placed 7th.Results. 2007-02-03:  5th round of German Bundesleague competitionMy club KSV Hostenbach is now in the last but one positionin the second Bundesleaugue divisionSüd-West.  In the home competition against leader Altrip we had no chance at alland Hostenbach - Altrip, ended 526.6to 636.6 points. My bodyweight was only 62.6 kg and I was already inbetter shapethen one week before. I snatched 110 and 115 and madea pullwith 118 kg (in training I hadn't beensurpassing 107.5 kgyet). As I have a fissure (miniscule rupture) in my patella, of the rightknee this time, I have to be very careful in the clean soI started with a low and easy 129 kg followed by134kg and137kg.My total of 252kg,which gave me 140 German Kilo points, was the second bestresult of theevening.2007-01-20: 2nd round of the French club competitionI'mcompeting for ASPTT Lille in thefirst division, were 9 teams are fighting for the title of strongestclub .They lift against each other, grouped by three clubs, with teamsconsisting of 5 athletes. The points (total - double bodyweight) of the4 best athletes are added. The club with the highest average after 4rounds will be nationalchampion.    As I just started my preparation I wasn't in a very good shape yet andabove that I'm again suffering from a small rupture in my patellatendon of the right knee. My bodyweight was 61.7 kg and my first snatch of 108kg wentcompletely wrong but in the second attempt it proved to be really easy.My third attempt with 112 kg was also right. Because of my knee injury in the clean&jerk I had tostartlow. I made three succesful lifts with 127kg, 132 kg and 135kg.  My 247 kg total gave me a rather low 357.2 Sinclair points (123.6Frenchpoints) which places me 16 th in the overallranking.Currently Clermont Sport is in the lead with a monster score of 579.50points, followed by  Girondin Bordeaux with 537.5 and Française Besanconwith 472.6 points. Current Ranking.ASPTT Lille is only ranked 6th with 429.2 because I couldn't compete inthe first round and because Eric Bonnel is injured. My Belgian clubmate Luc Lammens made 100 snatch and 130 clean and jerkat a bodyweight of 84.1 for the second team of ASPTT Lille (in seconddivision).Other Belgian lifter Sarah De Costermade a new national record in the femaleclub competition. At a bodyweight of 53 kg she made 138 kgtotal.  2006-12-31:  Happy Newyear!2006-12-27:  Photoreport on trainingcamp Belgian Olympic Team (BOT) As mentioned before theBelgian Olympic Commitee organised a training camp for all sportsmen inthe Belgian Olympic team in Sevilla from 6th till 13th ofNovember. Now pictures available 2006-11-04:  4rd round of German Bundesleague competitionAs I couldn'tcompete in the third round while I was in training camp with theOlympic commitee my club KSV Hostenbach alsolost the third competition. Therefore it was extremely important to winthis roundto be able to stay in the second Bundesleaugue divisionSüd-West.  We did make it against Ladenburg but it was closewith Hostenbach - Ladenburg, ending563.9to 547.6 points. My bodyweight was only 60.7 kg and I wasn't really in topshape anymore. But I did what I had to do and snatched 112, 116 and 119 kg. I started the clean with an easy 140 kg. The second jerkwith 145 kg was also ok, but the third with 148 kg wasn'tteechnically perfect so I caught the weight badly and it hurted my kneeso I dropped it.Anyway, a pretty decent total at the end of this seasonof 264kg,which gave me 160 German Kilo points, the best resultof theevening.  2006-11-17:  Asian Games Results 15th Asian Games in Doha.  2006-11-17:  Myreport on the World Championships Finally you can readmy photo report onthe senior World Championships from October.2006-11-17:  Trainingcamp Belgian Olympic Team(BOT) TheBelgian Olympic Commitee organised a training camp for all sportsmen inthe Belgian Olympic team in Sevilla from 6th till 13th ofNovember. Around 50 athletesfrom Cycling,Judo, BMX, Athletics, Taekwondo, Thriatlon, Canoe, Rowing andweightlifting were present in the sunny south of Spain. The press was present and the selectionlimits for the Olympics werepresented.I was also there and I will put a short report on this in the nearfuture.2006-11-04:  BENELUX championships TheNOGB (Dutch Weightlifting  Federation) decided to organise thechampionships of theBENELUX (Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg) in Amsterdam. As theBelgian federation found they saw it too much as a privateorganisation instead of a mutual colobaration and decisionmakingbetween the three involved federations, they didn'trecognise them as "our Benelux" championships, which was also thereason that there were very few Belgian lifters.Nonetheless20 male lifters and 6 females competed.Luc Lammens, my trainingpartner, took the overal title men Benelux with 250 kg total in the 85 kg class. The open overall title went to Andrew Goswell from Wales with 361sinclair points.Other Belgian lifter SarahDe Coster made a new Belgian record jerk of 80kg in the -53kgclass. Her total of 139 kg is also the national record. She won theoverall title women Benelux and Open.More results.       OlderNews: Newshistory   Visitors since Sept. 2002:    Copyright© Tom Goegebuer                              lastupdate:2007-10-11
