You Make the Call          You make the call In You Make the Call, you are the referee of a fencing bout. You will see the final action of a touch (the part just before the electric machine signals that a touch has been scored). You must decide if the touch (the point) goes to the fencer on the left, the fencer on the right, both, or neither. Choose either sabre or foil (epee rules are too simple, we don't want to make it too easy on you) and direct five rounds. Just to make sure you know what you're doing, here is a review of the rules you need to know. Click on the picture of a weapon to start You Make the Call for that weapon Foil  Target area on foil is the upper body including crotch but not including mask or arms. Foil is a point weapon, the point of the weapon must contact the target. In these examples you will know when the point makes contact because that blade will bend. Sabre  The target area in sabre is the upper body including arms and mask. Attacks in sabre can be made with the point, or a fencer can cut with the side of the blade. Right of way Both of these weapons, sabre and foil, use right of way. The fencer who has right of way will always get the touch. The person who begins the attack first has the right of way. If the fencer hesitates, or the fencer's blade is beat, the fencer will lose right of way to the opponent. Point in line (extending the blade straight out) will take right of way over any action after it except for a beat (hitting the blade purposefully to show control). If an attack is parried, then the fencer who parried it has the right of way to attack. The rules of right of way listed above basically say that the fencer who is in control of the situation gets the touch.
