As most normal people contemplate their Sunday lunch this week, some 60,000 others will wend their way to Celtic Park for this season’s inaugural bloodletting fest that is an Old Firm derby.Both sides have started the season tentatively and both have dropped points but both are showing signs of improvement as the games ensue. Several new faces have come to Glasgow, some players on loan have made their move permanent and Shaun Maloney has returned to his old stamping ground. Celtic laboured against St Mirren and, although they picked up at Tannadice, only a single point was claimed and in both these games even Celtic fans will admit they received the benefit of controversial refereeing decisions. Their best performance to date was their most recent outing at home to Falkirk and the form of Samaras and the returning Maloney will encourage them.Across the city, rivals Rangers are still licking their wounds after a disastrous early exit from European competition. Many fans will question why the investment in the team was not made prior to the qualifying ties.They can consider themselves fortunate to take three points at Falkirk due to Alan McGregor’s spot kick save but this was followed up with an improved performance and a comfortable win at home to Hearts. In their last game they will be concerned not to have killed Aberdeen off during a first half which they dominated only to concede a late equaliser. The seeming improved form deserted them in the second forty five and they had to settle for the draw.Several players will be making their Old Firm debuts and it will be interesting to see which ones are inspired by the passion and which are swept away by the frenzy. Celtic Park will be no place for the faint hearted but there will equally be no room for the hot head. Players of the ilk of Scott Brown and Kevin Thompson will do well to remember that a game lasts ninety minutes.Both sides have injury problems. Definitely out is the Rangers play maker and long term absentee, Barry Ferguson. Venegoor and McDonald are Celtic doubts. Key men on Sunday will be both goalkeepers and play makers Aiden McGeady and Pedro Mendes. Even without the two injury doubts Celtic can field a menacing strike force with Samaras and Maloney. Rangers on the other hand have no clear cut first picks up front and Walter Smith must make a careful choice. Kris Boyd’s goals have dried up which renders him a liability rather than an asset so does Smith hope that a goal is bound to come or should he go for a more all-round contributor like Kenny Miller? How sweet it would be for him to get himself on the score sheet.Celtic manager Gordon Strachan’s key selections will be in midfield where Nakamura, Hartley, Robson, Brown, McGeady, amongst others will be vying for a place.The home side will start as favourites but this is a chance for Rangers to show that their recovery is continuing. This fixture can be settled by a moment of brilliance, a moment of madness or a disastrous mistake.
