Students snatch injury time winner UCD0-10 ST VINCENT'S 0-9 Thestudents of Belfield kicked the concluding four points of this tie tobe crowned Dublin senior football champions at Parnell Park on Mondaynight in front of a crowd of 6,000. Vincent's led 0-4 to 0-2 atthe interval and heading towards the final ten minutes were threepoints to the good when holding onto a 0-9 to 0-6 lead. However, timing is everything and UCD held their nerve the better over thefinish with points from Sean Brady, Austin O'Malley (two, one free) andShane Lennon edging them to victory. Lennon's point in injury-time was the winning score when he angled overbrilliantly with his left foot from 30 metres. Overthe close of the game the Vins had enough possession to force the drawthey probably deserved to failed to turn it into scores while they wereunlucky not to get at least one late free in a very scoreable position. In a stop-start game which neither team dominated for any extendedperiod goal chances were minimal. DermotConnolly came closest when he struck the inside of the post in thethird minute of the game after a good crossfield pass by Tomas Quinn. UCDopened the scoring in the 11th minute when James Sherry scored butthree pointed frees from Quinn, including ones from 45 and 50 metres, helped Vins to settle on their way to a half-time lead of 0-4 to 0-2. TheVins strengthened their position with points from Pat Gilroy and KevinGolden, brilliantly curled from a standside free, to lead 0-6 to 0-2 inthe third minute of the second half. With 15 minutes to go therewas the minimum between the sides, 0-7 to 0-6, as UCD lifted the tempowith points from the influential Billy Sheehan, sub Niall McNamee andLennon (free). But Vins responded with Gilroy showing hisexperience to slot over from 35 metres before the hard-working TiernanDiamond cleverly knifed through the UCD cover for another score, afterbeing picked out by Gilroy. But it was the students who finishedwith a surge with the strength in depth helping to help them capturetheir seventh Dublin SFC title and they now progress to meet Meath'sWolfe Tones in the Leinster Club SFC this Sunday in Navan.
