2008-09 Basketball Team

Coach
Head basketball coach Richie Waggoner came to Hollins after six seasons as head coach of Lynchburg College. While with the Hornets he compiled a 67-84 record, making three ODAC tournaments and finishing as high as third in the regular season standings. In 2003-2004 he led Lynchburg to a 16-10 record, the school’s best in ten years. Waggoner received his B.B.A. from Roanoke College in 1992 and served as an assistant with the women's basketball team there for nine seasons. During his stint at Roanoke, the Maroons won seven league championships and made eight NCAA tournament appearances, reaching the Final Eight in 1991 and the Sweet 16 in 1992.
In addition to working with the women’s basketball team at Roanoke, Waggoner also served as an assistant at Glenvar High School. In 1997, he helped guide the Highlanders to a Virginia Group A State Championship.

2007-08 Season Highlights
The Hollins University basketball team persevered this season despite growing pains and adversity. A team roster that only included just two seniors was decimated throughout the season with injuries and departures. During J-Term, for example, two players left the team to study abroad, and at the beginning of Spring Term, two more players left to study in Europe. Often, the team struggled to put a full squad on the court. Nevertheless, the season featured several highlights – including a strong showing against ODAC rival Washington & Lee in December – and standout performances. Despite a disappointing campaign in 2007-08, the team’s future appears bright and the basketball program is heading in the right direction.
Season highlights:
First-year guard Tamara Phillips had an outstanding season, leading the team with an average of 10.3 points per game. She also led the team in steals and assists, falling just 12 assists short of the Hollins single-season record. In the ODAC, Phillips was ranked in eight different categories and was named to the All-ODAC Honorable Mention Team, marking the first time a Hollins first-year player has received this distinction.
Junior post player Emily Long led the team in rebounds and blocked shots. Long posted an average of 9.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. On January 15, she scored a career-high 24 points against Emory & Henry. Emily enjoyed another huge game just two weeks later when she scored 21 points against Lynchburg. Long ranked in the top 20 in both scoring and rebounding in the final ODAC standings.
Senior forward Emily Frost finished her Hollins career by representing Hollins and the conference in the ODAC/USA South All-Star Game. Despite getting in early foul trouble, Frost scored four points and grabbed four rebounds in the game played at North Carolina Wesleyan on March 16.
