-Sean Ratliff homered and Cord Phelps tripled in Stanford's four-run fifth inning, and the Cardinal ousted top-seeded Miami from the College World Series with an 8-3 victory Wednesday night. The Cardinal (41-23-2) advanced to the Bracket 1 finals against Georgia, needing to beat the Bulldogs twice to return to the best-of-three championship round for the second time since 2003. Starter Danny Sandbrink and reliever Erik Davis held the potent offense of Miami (53-11) in check. The Hurricanes failed to join the 1999 squad as the only No. 1 national seeds to win the College World Series.

-SMU's Schellas Hyndman (SHELL-us HIGHND-mun) is leaving a collegiate power to try to invigorate a struggling pro team. FC Dallas introduced Hyndman as its new coach Tuesday, less than a month after an embarrassing 5-1 loss in front of the biggest home crowd in franchise history. Steve Morrow was fired two days after that setback. The 58-year-old Hyndman made 30 trips to the NCAA tournament in 31 years as a college coach, including 23 of 24 seasons at SMU. The Mustangs were 368-92-35 under Hyndman and made four trips to the College Cup, the soccer equivalent of the Final Four. His overall record was 466-123-49, and he had more wins than any coach in SMU history.

North Carolina underclassmen Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington and Danny Green will return to Chapel Hill next season after removing their names from the NBA draft Monday. The school's announcement came less than an hour before the deadline for underclassmen who had not hired agents to withdraw from the draft. It means the Tar Heels figure to enter next year as prohibitive favorites to reach the Final Four. North Carolina will return its top six players while also adding one of the nation's top recruiting classes.

Can we please see someone other than Ohio State play for the national championship? Despite what some believe, I don't have a Buckeyes-bias. I just want to see some new blood playing for the national title. And hopefully that new blood puts up a real fight this time.

We get our first big weekend of the season when Week 3 rolls around. Headlining everything is, of course, arguably the biggest regular season matchup this season. It's Ohio State-USC in the L.A. Coliseum in a showdown that will have wide ranging implications. But Buckeyes-Trojans isn't the only big game on the board. It may be the marquee matchup, but other games certainly deserve some attention.

Maybe the majority of SEC coaches wanted to have an early signing period, but apparently some did not. Urban Meyer was among those who did not think having an early signing period was an intelligent move.

As we hit Week 2, we run into arguably the worst weekend of the year. Most of the big names are playing nobodies and you'll see some ugly, ugly scores. You could even see some ugly scores in the games we've highlighted as the week's best. But here's hoping we get a few close ones to hold us over until Week 3.

College football returns for the 2008 season in its usual spot - the last Thursday in August. Twelve games dot the schedule that evening, with the most enticing - arguably - coming in the form of a North Carolina State-South Carolina matchup in Columbia. Fortunately, the weekend features more appealing games than that.
