Shitoryu karate-doInom karaten brukar man säga att det finns fyra "grundstilar". Vi tränar den som heter Shitoryu. Typiskt för stilen är höga ställningar, korta rörelser i blockeringarna, höftvridning i teknikerna, tillbakadrag i slag och sparkar samt snabb rak attack framåt. Härstamningar av stilen leder oss tillbaka till stilarna Shorinryu och Gojuryu. Teknikerna är en blandning mellan den snabba explosiva stilen Shuri-te och den mjuka Naha-te där de berömda andningsövningarna finns. Som exempel kan nämnas katan Tensho. En intressant observation är också att våra höga ställningar beror i stor del på att vi i katatillämpning (bunkai) strävar efter att vara så nära verkligheten som möjligt. På grund av intryck från olika karateskolor och intresset för redskapsträning (kubudo) brukar man kalla Shitoryu för en "multi-karate".Namnet Shitoryu är en sammansättning av skrivtecknen (kanjin) för mästarna Kenwa Mabuni, Shitoryns grundare, Higaonna och Itossu. Kenwa Mabuni, Shitoryuns grundare. Han var dåtidens "katalexikon". Det sägs att när Mabuni dog så dog med honom många odokumenterade kator.I Sverige verkar idag ett stort antal skolor inom Shitoryukaraten. Mellan skolorna finns en stor förståelse och i många fall ett tydligt samarbete. Som ett uttryck för det utkämpas varje vår ett Riksmästerskap i Shitoryukarate, Hayashi cup.
