World Cup Final  5 October 2008 - The World Cup Final for Men took place today in the beautiful city of Caldas da Rainha in Portugal. This was the final competition in the World Cup Series and the final major competition in what has been a long season including the Olympic Games in Beijing.
Recent Olympic silver medallist, Edvinas Krungolcas (LTU) took part in the competition however could not replicate his Olympic performance finishing the day in 21st. It was however a golden day for Robert Kasza of Hungary leading from the swim event and holding his lead throughout the run to be crowned World Cup Champion 2008. Ondrej Polivka (CZE) crept into the top three following a perfect round in the ride (1200 points). He started the run in third position and managed to overtake second placed Dmytro Kirpulyanskyy (UKR). After a consistely good performance, always within the top 10 throughout the day, Eli Bremmer (USA) entered the run in seventh position and seemingly prompted by an inner strength powered through the course to cross the line in third position for the bronze medal. In the women's competition yesterday, Elena Rublevska (LAT) lead the competition from the fencing through to the run. She achieved the best fencing score of 21 V/9 D and a perfect score in the riding or 1200 points, giving her a 25 second lead at the beginning of the run over her nearest competitior. Her strongest competitiors were Donata Rimsaite (LTU) and recent Olympic silver medallist, Heather Fell (GBR) with the trio commencing the run 1,2,3 respectively. COMBINED EVENTThe Combined Event is the proposed new format for modern pentathlon in which the shoot and run disciplines are combined into an action packed finale! This means that the competition will begin with fencing, followed by swim and equestrian ride then the shoot/run finish.
Throughout 2007 and 2008 UIPM has held a number of test events with this format. The final test event will be during the 2008 World Cup Final in Portugal 4-5 October. After this, the combined format will be proposed to the UIPM Congress 21-23 November for a vote to be held on whether to accept this format or not. If it is accepted the combined event will be the new competition format for modern pentathlon from 1 January 2009.
