Michael Johnson is quite simply one of the greatest athletes on the planet, and one of the best ever.
His place in history was sealed at the Atlanta Olympics, during which he won an unprecedented 200 metres-400 metres sprint double.
No athlete has ever won both events at Olympic level, let alone achieving the feat at the same Games.
Unfortunately, his injury in the final of the 200m at the US Olympic trials means Johnson will not be able to attempt to repeat his double effort in Sydney, although he will run the 400m.
Winning the double in Atlanta was impressive enough, but it was the nature of the victories, particularly in the 200m, which made Johnsons name forever.
In shattering the record, Johnson finished metres ahead of silver medallist Frankie Fredericks. No-one else before or since has come near his time of 19.32 seconds.
The worlds best time for the 200m in 1999 was a full half a second outside Johnsons mark, at 19.84 seconds, recorded by Nigerian Francis Obikwelu.
But if anything, Johnsons domination of the 400m has been even greater. Although it took him much longer to break the world record in this event, his defeats have been rarer than thunderstorms in the Great Sandy Desert.
Overdue record
At the world championships in Seville in 1999 he completed the only piece of unfinished business remaining in his career by breaking the 11-year-old 400m world record held by Butch Reynolds.

Like his 200m victory in Atlanta, it was daylight second.
With that monkey off his back, Johnson was ready to concentrate on defending his 200-400 double in Sydney, but the cramp he suffered at the trials has put paid to that.
Ironically, the man who potentially stood in the way of back-to-back doubles for Johnson, 100m world record holder Maurice Greene, also broke down in that 200m final at the trials.
Greene won the 200m title at Seville in a time of 19.90 seconds after Johnson chose not to contest the event.
Greene had been trumpeting for months before the trials that he was the number one man in the event, and that he was going to consign Johnson to the history books.
Johnson fought back in the verbal stakes, but now that Johnson says he's run his last 200m race, the two will never go head-to-head in a major 200m race.
Although he has enjoyed double success at Olympic level, Johnson has also tasted bitter disappointment.
Heading into the 1992 Games in Barcelona, Johnson was a raging hot favourite for the 200m. But he was ill in the lead-up to the Games and failed to even make the final.
A gold medal as part of the United States 4x400m relay team was scant compensation.
Johnson has been a part of a number of relay triumphs for the USA since then, taking gold medals home from world championships and the Goodwill Games.
Characterised by his upright, short-striding style, Johnson will be one of the premier athletes and biggest drawcards in Sydney.
