THAT'S A HORSE-HUSBAND !  How can YOU tell if YOU'RE a Horse-Husband? By the symptoms:1. Do you ever get up (against your own will) in the dark on weekends to travel miles from home in bad weather to watch a contest where your family will only SPEND money with no hope of GETTING any?2. Do you have ABSOLUTELY no time for your own interests because you have to:(a)repair "vintage" farm equipment.(b)dig fencepost,jump,water or any other type of hole.(c)babysit a child wearing a tee-shirt with any type horse related graphic upon it.These are just a few of the possible symptoms...more to come. I'm filing the symptoms submitted by our "breathren". Why a Horse-Huband Webpage? Because we've been oppressed for too long. There is strength and support in numbers. We need to share advice, tips, do's/don'ts. Here's an example:Rule #1: Don't build a barn any bigger than necessary. It will never store your motorcycle, boat or snowmobile. All that equipment will be rusting in the rain.It will be filled with stalls. They will multiply to fit space available. .........We don't intend to overthrow our oppressors (resistance is futile) we need to make life as palatable as possible. I'm not going to post them at this time as I don't want to publish their names/address. But welcome to Steve in the Midwest and Tony in the Granite State. My experiences this weekend were pretty typical for an HH. Here Goes.. Here in upstate NY we're in for an early MUD SEASON. I can tell by the subtle changes in the wind (the spreader is stinking more), the landscape is changing color, and the sure sign...I'm upto my ankles in slop. The unusually warm weather and a good dose of rain has changed the farm from solid under foot to not knowing if you'll soon be on your butt thrashing wildly. Saturday I was able to take my 6yr old daughter and her best Bud for a ride in a sleigh behind the old skidoo (or as I frequently call it, the Ski-Don't). I found myself wondering if we CAN get enough speed up to slide across the now swollen stream/slush flows. We made it most of the time. After that, "Spring Fever" inspired me to start driving the post-bases for the new run-in. Through lots of frozen crust of course. A job well suited to carbohydrate consumption from brown bottles...More later. NEWS 2/29/00 What can I say, re-re-re-re-designed the run-in. IMPORTANTANT ! ! ! I've not implemented the latest theory( but I'm Close). The new "run-in"(building) is half in the paddock and half outside the fence. Gee..great for the equines, out of the elements, and.....a...good place to mount the fence charger...YEAH, THAT's IT ! ( thank you Mr. Lovitz ). I AM staking out a new shed and there will be space for the $90 motorcycle and the $75 SkiDoo. NO I'M SERIOUS THIS TIME ! Thaaanks to everyone that has written, interesting note: received almost as many supportive males....errr....I mean mails...from our spouses. Anybody other vehicles other than a couple of indians and a Lotus that are getting dusty? Can any HH help me "enhance" the page? HH News 3/2/00Can anyone steer me to an easy to use webpage editor that I can use to upgrade this page. The AOL 123 publish is really limitted?How much do you guys/gals pay for hay? Around here we're paying about $2 for good quality rectangular bales.Here's a couple of tips for today:1: When being dragged to a horseshow, put your project of choice in the second stall of the horse-trailer (next to the beer cooler). I squeeze in my dirtbike. There's always downtime between the events.2: DON"T get a pony for your kid. It will be around long after you are a grandfather/mother.Maybe more tonight, keep the mail coming...how about some "one of those bad days" stories.Then I'll tell you about my latest, involves tractor,shovels, poop and LOTS of snow.Update 3/7/00Do you move piles of dirt by hand/shovel? Have you ever called a neighbor or a tow truck to pull your car/pick-up or Mother-in-Law out of the mud? Have your hands touched the handle of a snow-shovel lately?If you answer "yes" to any or all of these questions, YOU need a tractor. Not of the little wimpy garden variety, and not the air conditioned eight-wheel Monster tractors that ADM uses( I wish). Just one suited/sized to your property. A good used farm tractor can cost less than a new quality weenie tractor. Rationalizations: Plowing snow, extracating stuck vehicles/relatives mowing gradingREAL Reasons ! Hayrides for birthday parties. Build huge snowforts when you're supposed to be plowing. You can play neighborhood hero during blizzards. The best part is pulling out your neighbor's " 4 WD ". Best Part. IT'S LIKE HAVING A GIANT TONKA-TOY ! Tractor Rules: No riders, there are no other seats. No beer (booo..) But we stand around and admire our tractors with can in hand.
