The
Ontario Quarter Horse Industry loses a large part of its’ heart
Anyone
involved with the Ontario Quarter Horse scene has had some association with
the imposing figure that was George Egerton.
The industry’s racing wing at Ajax Downs was most recently where you
would see this mountain of a man, with a heart as big as the truck he drove.
His image is the one many relate to when you mention Ajax Downs –
Picov Downs.
George
was a key figure in many aspects of the Ontario Quarter Horse scene.
Added to positions George held on the executive of the racing
association dating back many years, George was associated with virtually every
facet of the industry. He was a
perennial figure at major Quarter Horse Shows, providing himself as the Ring
Manager of the Canadian National Exhibition show, Quarterama, and other key
shows. When not involved with racing or a show, he would often be
helping anyone who asked for his aid, be it hauling a horse somewhere,
providing his expertise and knowledge, or just plain providing a helping hand
in any way.
Retired
from the Toronto Fire Department, George kept active in his profession as a
volunteer fire fighter. His
expertise and experience in this regard was often drawn on at the track.
With
his knowledge of the Quarter Horse breed, the intricacies of the
Association’s operations and advancing the breed, George was key person in
the history of the Ontario Quarter Horse scene.
He will indeed be missed.

Egerton shown here accepting the 2007 Ken Mucklstone Award.
Just One Person's
Reflection...
I had a
call from a friend today who wanted to pass on his
condolences regarding the passing of the Vice President of our
association. Quite obviously, this person did not know who
George Egerton was, which that in itself was amazing, but as I
responded quite clearly to this person he wasn't just the Vice
President, he was a friend.
After
hearing the news yesterday of George's passing, I wanted to put
down my personal reflection of the man known, as "Big
George", one of many, many hundreds if not thousands, literally,
that are reflecting about this man.
Being a
relative new comer to this sport, I can honestly say, very few people
will leave an impression on me like Big George. Not just in
this sport, but in life.
When you
speak of quarterhorse racing and specifically our small family the QROOI,
was there an individual that was more passionate about our sport? Not
in my mind.
On many
occassions I have asked George, "how long have you been around
this place?". George would always give me the year, the
month and rub his chin and try hard to even think of the day he fell
for this sport. To all of us the answer is quite simple -
forever.
I don't
have to get into all of the things that George has done, and will
be remembered for, the list is truly endless and he is most
definately a worthy recipient of the Ken Mucklstone award for 2007.
If there
was a builders category in the QROOI...
"Big
George" would be at the top of the list.
