Roller Skating History Page(New Zealand) The following is my best attempt to tell the story of Artistic Skating in New Zealand From its beginnings to 1980ish
Mr G S Bright
If one name pops up time and time again its Joe Bright.I would think that Mr G.S Bright has had the single most impact on Artistic skating in New Zealand . As you read on we will learn more about him, but for now, we will honour him with his picture at the top of the page .

Artistc Roller skating in New Zealand first began in 1936, when the New South Wales skating club (Australia) contacted the Wellington Evening Post asking for information regarding any amateur skating organisation in New Zealand. As no such body existed in New Zealand, the enquiry was handed on to Mr G.S Bright, who was operating a rink at the time. A reply was then sent to Australia, that tests would be held in Wellington, and one lady and one man would be selected to go to Australia, to skate in the New South Wales Centennial Amateur Roller Skating Championships (Sydney). Miss Jean Hahn of Christchurch and Mr Roy Blair of Dunedin, were selected to represent New Zealand. This was New Zealands first international team, as a result Miss Jean Hahn won the waltzing competition, our first international success.By this stage, interest was steadily growing, in roller skating, the New Zealand Association was formed, under Mr G.S Bright and Mr A Power. Later that year, the first Amateur Skating Association made plans for the first National Championships to be held in Auckland in 1938.The Glide rink in Kyber Pass (Auckland) was selected for the first NZ National Championship, the event took all of one day. It was only for seniors. The following year, the National Championships were held in Dunedin. This time the event took all of 2 days, one day for seniors and one day for juniors.By 1946, the National Championships were taking 4 days to complete, with new events being added.1946 was also a very important year for NZ roller skating. NZ received an invitation from the Americans to skate in their Amateur World Championships in Oakland, California, 1947. This proved to be a turning point in NZ artistic skating, as our new international representatives, had been introduced to new dances and styles of skating, which they brought home, and as a result the standard of skating in NZ improved dramatically.
Today amongst us young onesthe names and results of our first elite and international skaters are all but unkown. Our first team to the USA in fact received several minor placings.Joyce and Sandy Allchurch received a 3rd place, Oakland 1947.
In 1950, the first Australasian Amateur Championships were held. (Oceanias - modern day equivalent) The event was an outstanding success, with "full house" signs being displayed at all eventing sessions. On the final night, over 1000 people were turned away.OH! to have those numbers again!
Joyce and Sandy Allchurch, 1943-1949 NZ Champions.During the early 50's, Mr G.S Bright took over the presidency, and Mrs H.A Allchurch took over as secretary. In 1953/54 there was internal conflict within the skating association. (not quite sure about what yet) the end result was the association being split in 2. One being the New Zealand Roller Skating Association (NZRSA) and the other being the Amateur Roller Skating of New Zealand (ARSANZ).The NZ Roller Skating Association, which was the bigger of the two, associated itself with the Americans and the World Roller Skating Congress. The Amateur Roller Skating of New Zealand, affiliated itself with the europeans based in Switzerland.New Zealand, up until 1970, had 2 sets of National Championships and International representatives.Records indicate that the NZRSA had just under two thirds of the registered skaters in New Zealand, while the ARSANZ musted just under one third of the skaters, they had a much smaller region to draw upon, consisting mainly of the central north island , However they Ran most of the out door rinks.
1947 rep team from left to right:Sandy Allchurch, Valerie Burgess, Jean McNulty, MrsA.LPower, (chaperone), Joyce Allchurch, A.L Power (manager) and Bill Travis (in front)
1956 was another turning point for NZ skating. 7 skaters were selected to compete in Richmond Virginia, USA, under the management of Mr G.S Bright. All members of this international team were successful in securing places at this competition. In fact, Ian McPhee won the half mile race, becoming a World Champion. After the return of this team, NZRSA went through a complete reorganisation, changing skating styles and even changing nationals from mid season to January. (and since then its has changed back and forth a few times)
