98 Topguns Heat Up Vegas!

Saturday, July 12, 2008
The 98 Topguns were expecting to be in for another tough tournament at the North American AAA Champions Cup in Las Vegas. They were hoping to play their best against some very strong teams and have some fun on the Vegas strip. But everything changed during the first game.
The boys overcame a 2nd period 3 goal deficit to beat a stacked Canwest Falcons team 7-6.
The next day they overcame another 2nd period 3 goal deficit to beat a very skilled team from Boston.
Our 3rd game was a dominating 8-1 win against a team from California.
The 4th game saw the 98 Topguns overcome a 3rd period 4 goal deficit to take a 5-4 lead late into the period against the Sask Grrrowl. An unfortunate bounce with 1 minute to go lead to a late goal by the Grrrowl which ended the game in a tie.
All this left the 98 Topguns in first place overall heading into the playoffs. The talk at the arena was centered on what our team was doing. The kids and the parents could all feel the excitement in the air.
Our first playoff game against the Falcons was a seesaw battle that saw no less than 3 lead changes. A late empty net goal made the score 6-4 for the Falcons.
Our final game against a very talented Vancouver Selects team didn't go our way as the boys were physically drained.
All in all it was the most successful tournament to date for our team and bodes well for the future.
Oh yeah... and the boys had fun on the Vegas strip!

The 1999 Top Guns won the Bronze Medal at the North American Subway Classic Tournament in Winnipeg on June 15th. The tournament played host to the top teams from Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Midwest United States. The 3rd place game featured a rematch with the talented Minnesota Machine. The Top Guns jumped out to a 3-0 lead and hung on for an exciting 7-6 victory. The Guns were relegated to the Bronze Medal game after a tough 6-1 loss to the U.S Midwest All-Stars. The Guns out-chanced and out-shot the Midwest All-Stars but could not capitalize on their chances.
The Guns started the weekend with a 7-0 victory over the host Manitoba Lightning. The Guns dropped their second game to the Minnesota Machine by a score of 10-2 in a game that saw the Americans score six power-play goals. The third game was a must win for the Top Guns if they were to move on to the A-Side Pool. The Guns played a great game in coming back with 3 third period goals to beat the top Saskatchewan team, Wheatland Wild, 4-2.

2000 Top Guns Win Home Tournament
The 2000 Top Guns have won the Top Guns AAA Tournament - Super Series Division, catapulting the team to an unbelievable 16-1-1 tournament record.
Since the tournament was divided into two divisions to maintain parity between teams, it gave the boys a challenge from start to finish. The tournament started with a game against our crosstown rivals, the Selects. True to the philosophy of the two divisions, the game was tight and our team pulled out a close 3-2 win with the winning goal coming with less than 5 minutes remaining. The second game was against the NAA Xtreme, and much like the first game our team skated to a close 9-8 win. Again the winning goal came with less than 5 minutes remaining. Our third game, which was early Saturday morning, was an especially tough one against the Foothills Attack. The boys had a slow start and were down 2-1 after two periods. They needed to dig deep within themselves to come from behind, but they did just that with two unanswered goals in the third. The Attack tied the game with less than 5 minutes remaining to eek out a 3-3 tie. The last round robin game was a bit less stressful for the parents with a 10-0 win over a Wolverines South team.
With a 3-0-1 round robin record our boys finished first in the division, and set up a rematch against the Foothills Attack in the semis. Our boys had a 3-1 lead at one point but the Foothills team climbed back to tie the game. But our Top Guns showed their heart and pulled out a 5-4 win, with the winning goal coming with less than 2 minutes remaining. With the Selects defeated by the NAA Xtreme in the other semis, which set up a rematch with NAA Xtreme in the final.
At this point in the tournament the team changed the focus from hockey to plain old fun with a tailgate BBQ. This was certainly a highlight for the parents for the simple reason that it is nice to get together outside of the rink. The boys played, and the siblings played harder and we all enjoyed the sunny day.
But back to the action…the finals were underway. The Top Guns came out firing on all cylinders and took the play to the Xtreme and jumped out to a 4-1 first period lead. Then they stretched it to a 7-3 second period lead and the game ended 9-5 for our boys, to claim our third tournament gold medal game win this season. The game was exciting with a lot of action, a few penalty shots, and some spectacular saves. Way to go boys!
To summarize this weekend, our team endured the challenges of the opposing teams desire to defeat our talented team. But in the end we prevailed. They worked through some tough situations, supported each other when needed and always, I mean always, came out of the dressing room with a smile. For this parent, watching this season unfold makes me feel privileged to be part of this experience. Until the next time, Tops Guns rock! Yahoo!

The Guns went undefeated in the round robin after posting four wins. In the first game the Guns defeated the Calgary Prospects 13-2. In the nightcap the Guns defeated a stubborn Red Deer squad by a 7-3 margin. In Saturday’s games the Guns defeated the Southern Alberta Selects 9-4 and the Wolverine South (Medicine Hat and Lethbridge) 11-0. The semi-final game featured a rematch with the Rustlers from Red Deer. The Top Guns jumped on the Rustlers early on their way to a 9-1 victory and a trip to the Finals.

2000 Top Guns Win Showdown in Cowtown AAA Tournament
The 2000 Top Guns team, riding a winning streak, went into the Showdown in Cowtown tournament feeling the groove. The Alberta Champions Cup was a great test for this young team and we were eager to prove the trend could continue.
The first game was a testament to how well the kids have come together. The passing is phenomenal. The parents were amazed. The game ended with a win against the Red Deer Rustlers. What a great start. We followed this win with 4 - 0 round robin record with wins against the Prince George Ice Hawks, Foothills Elites South and the Southern Alberta Selects. This qualified our team for the first semi-final game vs. the Top Gun Posse team. The game was tight early, but our boys poured it on and kept steady pressure and prevailed as the winner. With the win we advanced to the final against the Southern Alberta Selects, for the rematch! Both teams came out of the gate with pressure and persistence but much like the semi-final game our boys were consistent from start to end and came up with the win.
The tournament was another building block for the boys. Keep up the great work, your moms and dads are proud.

2000 Top Guns Win Alberta Champions Cup
With only two exhibition games under their belt, the 2000 Top Guns headed to Edmonton for the Alberta Champions Cup to prove that they were contenders and to prove that the practice time since early Jan/08 was plenty enough to gel as a team.
The first game on Friday was against the Sask Grrrowl, our team came out full of energy and defeated the opposition 11-1. Michael Hodge and Peyton Krebs netted a hat trick and singles came from Hoon Kim, Hunter Nelson, Louis Jamernik (and nicely setting up two of the goals) , Max Giangualano and Quinn Olson. And the defense was superb, limiting the shots on our goalie to 10 shots, but Davyn LaRocke was there when we needed him.
The second game on Friday was against a very tough Young Guns team from Surrey, BC. The team fought hard together but fell in defeat by a score of 9-2. Jarret Timmerman and Spencer Moe netted out goals. Our goalie Davyn LaRocke was very busy with 23 shots, that's a lot of work for sure. With a long day put in at the rink and the kids unphased by the loss, they played hard at the hotel and had a blast. The highlight of the day was our lunch at BPs between games, where the boys were nice and loud, laughing, running the waitresses off their feet and having lots of fun.
With a good nights sleep (ha ha) the boys came out for the early morning game on Saturday full of fury again, defeated the NAA Xtreme by a score of 7-5. This was a very close game with Davyn LaRocke making 18 awesome saves and the goals coming from Jarret Timmerman with a pair, and singles from Quinn Olson, Louis Jamernik, Kyle Braco (with a nice end to end rush), Michael Hodge and Max Giangualano. Peyton Krebs, Michael Hodge and Jonathan Tychonick added several helpers as well. The most exciting part of this game, and the TSN turning point as voted on by the parents, was the 2nd intermission pep talk by the coaches Lou Jamernik, Perry Giangualano, Kerry Tychonick and Tim LaRocke. It only took no more than a few minutes in the dressing room, but it certainly worked. After the 2nd period we were down 5-4 but bounced back with three unanswered goals in the 3rd period to win the game. Just awesome say the parents.
The second game on Saturday was much different than the second game from the day prior, as we defeated CWH Quest by a score of 11-5. Jarret Timmerman netted a trick, Jonathan Tychonick and Spencer Moe netted a deuce, and loners came from Kyle Braco, Quinn Olson, Michael Hodge and Hoon Kim. Louis Jamernik had several nice assists as well. Davyn LaRocke was limited to 13 shots and the parents want to give a shout out to the opposing goalie, who got peppered with 36 shots. The kids hit the pool to unwind (ha ha) in the evening.
Sunday was a bit of a rush for the parents, with some confusion with game times but nonetheless we were on our way. We had finished second in our pool, just behind the Young Guns, and the cross-over semi final game was against a sharp looking Wolverines North squad. The kids came out like a team on a mission for the first two periods and gave the opposition very little opportunities, then settled back in the third to conserve some energy in a convincing 8-1 win. Spencer Moe netted three juicy shots, and singles were added by Max Giangualano, Kyle Braco, Jonathan Tychonick, Hunter Nelson and Jarret Timmerman. Hunter added a nice assist on one of Spencer's goals. Davyn LaRocke added 17 saves. With the kids playing five games already, the parents just could not believe the kids were ready and willing to put in one last push in the finals against an undefeated Sask-itoba Rangers. The wear and tear of a long weekend was showing, but the team united with one another and fought hard. The 1st period ended at 0-0 . The 2nd period gave some relief for the parents with three goals from Spencer Moe, Louis Jamernik and Max Giangualano and it ended 3-0. The third period had us 20 minutes from victory, but the opposition came back with two goals. The parents were a wreck. The coaches had no voices left. The kids were riding on empty…BUT they pulled off a 3-2 victory. We were victorious. The kids were ecstatic! The most exciting part of this game was the play of our goalie Davyn LaRocke, with so many highlight reel saves. Just amazing.
In summary, the parents are over the moon proud of their kids and the coaches are just as proud for playing like a team. There is no 'I' in team. We win together, we lose together…but for now we win.
Good job Top Guns.

'98 Top Guns 'n Stars Champions
May 9-11, 2008
Top Guns Minor Atom Super Series Tournament
The '98 Top Guns Super Series Tournament was a very competitive weekend all in all. With close games and end to end battles, the '98 Top Guns 'n Stars came out victorious in an exciting overtime win. It took only 39 seconds into overtime for the Guns to bury one deep in the Selects net to claim the Tournament Championship. It was a battle all weekend between the Selects and the Guns with the Selects winning the first game 6-5....then a tie game at 6-6 only to have a one goal game in the final. The '98 Top Guns team never quit all weekend and although they were outscored by a fair margin in the first two games against both the Guns and the Selects, the final two games was a different story. Their development over the weekend was nothing less than sensational as they held the Guns to a 2-2 tie after the first period and battled to the end with the Guns moving ahead as the game moved on. Sunday morning the Selects too had a battle on their hands winning by 5-2. The Top Guns "Never Quit" attitude was truly remarkable and their development will surely enhance their team as the move forward into their other spring tournaments. Special thanks to Cherryl at Top Guns for all her efforts in making this a memorable weekend for the players and a big thank you to the score keepers and referees that worked through out the Mothers Day weekend.

Alberta Champions Cup (Edmonton) May 2-4, 2008
The newly formed '99 Top Guns Black Aces were introduced to some of the finest AAA hockey in Northern Alberta.
The first game saw the Black Aces come out very strong defeating the Peace Country Selects 8 to 1, Luke Legault led the team with a hat trick performance, Jane Jacobs added a pair and singles went to Zachary Cox, Jeremy Brigham, and Cody Brodhagen.
Onto the afternoon matinee, the kids followed up their early morning win with another Victory against Alberta Predators,
6 to 3 leading the team this time was Noah Birkkjaer who potted a pair, singles went to Dylan Rieberer, Matthew Fowler, Tyler Witzke, and Jeremy Brigham.
Saturdays games proved to be a little tougher for the kids, the first game they fell to a defeat of 4 to 3 in a penalty filled game against the NSD Thunder, goals went to Mason Reid, Tyler Ziehl, and Dylan Anhorn.
Needing a win in the afternoon matinee to qualify for the Playoffs, the kids showed up with their "A" game winning 3 to 2 against a strong CAN West Rebels Team. Scoring with just 2:14 left in the third was the confident Cody Brodhagen , the other two goals were scored by Luke Legault and Tyler Witzke.
This vaulted the Black Aces into the Gold Medal game against the Saskitoba Rangers, unfortunately the kids ran out of gas in the third period falling to defeat 7 to 2, Scoring the two goals was Tyler Witzke and James Yan.
The tournament was a great experience for the kids and they are looking forward to the next.

Our very own Top Guns 2000 team put forth a hard working TEAM effort and defeated the Southern Alberta 2000 Selects Saturday at Springbank arena. It was a very tense game with hard work from both sides but Top Guns prevailed with an 8-3 victory. The game started out fast and furious with action at both ends. Top Guns jumped out to a 4-0 early lead with the first goal coming from Spencer Moe, followed by 2 quick ones form hard working Jarret Timmerman. A lot of credit goes to the Selects for their never quick attitudes as the came back to pot the next one. But the boys were strong and played great defensively and rallied to score 4 more and shutting down the late surge from the Selects. Jarret Timmerman scored 2 more and added 2 assists while determined goaltender Davyn LaRocke shut the door making 17 saves on 20 shots. Also adding goals were Michael Hodge, Peyton Krebs, and Jonathon Tychonik. What a great game and an outstanding effort from the entire Top Guns 2000 AAA team. Top Guns will be having the rubber match on Tuesday at Ernie Starr. Good Luck and go get em’!!!!!
