Our View Garcia has a tough match-up against Carolina, who rank 4th in the NFL in total defense and 3rd in passing defense. Chris Taylor, RB - Houston Texans October 12 @ 11:15am CT Houston Texans Week 6 inactives - Texans inactives: RB Chris Taylor, FS Dominique Barber, LB Xavier Adibi, G Kasey Studdard, OT Rashad Butler, TE Mark Bruener, DE ND Kalu, DT Frank Okam. Our View As expected, Chris Taylor (quad) is out. Ahman Green will back up Steve Slaton at running back. Ernest Wilford, WR - Miami Dolphins October 12 @ 11:12am CT Miami Dolphins Week 6 inactives - Dolphins inactives: QB John Beck (3rd), WR Ernest Wilford, G Shawn Murphy, DE Lionel Dotson, T Nate Garner, T Kirk Barton, WR Derek Hagan, DE Rodrique Wright. Our View Ernest Wilford continues to disappoint as a healthy inactive. Brian Griese, QB - Tampa Bay Buccaneers October 12 @ 11:08am CT Tampa Bay Buccaneers Week 6 inactives - Buccaneers inactives: QB Josh Johnson (3rd), QB Brian Griese, FB BJ Askew, LB Matt McCoy, T Anthony Davis, T James Lee, WR Joey Galloway, DT Greg Peterson. Our View Jeff Garcia starts in place of Brian Griese (elbow) and veteran wide receiver Joey Galloway (foot) is becoming a staple on this list. Samari Rolle, CB - Baltimore Ravens October 12 @ 11:08am CT Baltimore Ravens Week 6 inactives - Ravens inactives: QB Troy Smith (3rd), CB Samari Rolle, S Dawan Landry, DB Fabian Washington, T David Hale, T Adam Terry, WR Marcus Smith, DT Lamar Divens. Our View Peyton Manning should look to exploit Frank Walker at cornerback, who is starting in place of Samari Rolle. Ray Lewis and Willis McGahee are active, as expected. Bob Sanders, S - Indianapolis Colts October 12 @ 11:05am CT Indianapolis Colts Week 6 inactives - Colts inactives: S Bob Sanders, CB Kelvin Hayden, LB Buster Davis, G Daniel Federkeil, WR Roy Hall, DT Daniel Muir, DE Marcus Howard, DB Nick Graham. Our View Defensive end Dwight Freeney is active. The Ravens should be able to run the ball effectively with Bob Sanders still out. D.J. Hackett, WR - Carolina Panthers October 12 @ 11:05am CT Carolina Panthers Week 6 inactives - Panthers inactives: QB Matt Moore (3rd), WR DJ Hackett, DB Quinton Teal, LB James Anderson, C Ryan Kalil, T Jeff Otah, WR Kenneth Moore, DT Darwin Walker.
Our View D.J. Hackett (knee) is out and will be replaced in the slot by Dwayne Jarrett. Dwight Freeney, DE - Indianapolis Colts October 12 @ 11:03am CT Freeney active in Week 6 - Dwight Freeney (hamstring) is active in Week 6 and should start. Our View The Ravens have played conservatively on offense this season, so it could be tough for Freeney to add to his sack total. More Player News AL NL Paul Konerko, 1B - Chicago White Sox October 12 @ 10:35am CT Konerko comments on season - Paul Konerko commented on Chicago's season, which ended in the ALDS against the Rays, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The veteran first baseman said, "All in all, I look at this year as far as the team, and I think we went exactly as far as we were supposed to go with the injuries we had at the end. We got every last gasp out of how it shook out the last month and a half. Guys went down (namely Joe Crede, Carlos Quentin, and Jose Contreras). You don't complain about it. You don't make excuses. But it makes you have to dig deeper earlier. Your playoffs start in September, and it's tough to keep it going. We just ran out of gas."
Our View He will turn 33 in March, and will work on his conditioning and improving his health in the off-season after being limited to 122 games due to several injuries. Rocco Baldelli, CF - Tampa Bay Rays October 12 @ 10:26am CT Baldelli expected to start Game 3 - Rocco Baldelli is expected to get his first start of the playoffs in Game 3 of the ALCS against Boston, according to the Providence Journal. Manager Joe Maddon said, "This young man, I know you got a chance to see him a couple years ago, but physically gift-wise he's one of the tops in the American League. Getting him to play on a regular basis, again, would be beautiful. Just being able to utilize him as we have as a right fielder- DH, possibly pinch-hitter is all great. But also his influence and his stability within the clubhouse matters. I'm really big into all that stuff. I think it goes well beyond your batting average."
Our View He is expected to get the call over Gabe Gross in right field while facing lefty hurler Jon Lester. Hiroki Kuroda, P - Los Angeles Dodgers October 12 @ 9:27am CT Kuroda set for Game 3 - Hiroki Kuroda will take the hill in tonight's Game 3 of the NLCS, with the Dodgers trying to come back from a 2-0 deficit in the best-of-seven series against the Phillies. Our View Kuroda is a major league rookie, but the Dodgers are in good hands, as he held a 1.22 WHIP during the regular season, and hurled 6.1 scoreless innings in Game 3 of the NLDS against Chicago (Los Angeles won 3-1). He will be opposed by 45-year-old vet Jamie Moyer. Manny Ramirez, LF - Los Angeles Dodgers October 12 @ 9:08am CT Ramirez comments on free agency - Manny Ramirez commented on his inpending free agency by saying, "Maybe I can get a six-year deal," according to the NY Daily News. Our View Dodgers' management agreed to discard his $20 million options for 2009 and 2010 upon his acquisition from Boston. He remains among the best hitters in the majors, but would be 42 at the end of a six-year deal, and could be hard-pressed to find a club willing to fulfill his wishes for a contract that long. Mike Lowell, 3B - Boston Red Sox October 12 @ 7:46am CT Lowell likely done - Mike Lowell is likely done for the remainder of the postseason due to his ailing hip, according to the Boston Globe. Our View Indications are that off-season surgery should get him back to his normal self in 2009. J.D. Drew, RF - Boston Red Sox October 12 @ 7:28am CT Drew held out - J.D. Drew was held out of Saturday's Game 2 of the ALCS against the Rays, and manager Terry Francona said the decision was not injury-related, according to the Houston Chronicle. Drew was hit in the right shoulder by a pitch from hard-throwing Tampa Bay reliever Grant Balfour in the eighth inning of Game 1, but Francona said, "He’s not in the lineup, and that’s not because he got hit. We’re putting Coco in center more because of Scott Kazmir. We want Ellsbury to stay in the leadoff spot."
Our View Drew hit a game-winning home run off closer Francisco Rodriguez in Game 2 of the ALDS against the Angels, and there is a chance he will make a solid impact at some point during the ALCS. Dan Wheeler, P - Tampa Bay Rays October 12 @ 12:48am CT Wheeler tosses 3.1 scoreless - Reliever Dan Wheeler deserves a round of applause for his efforts in the Game 2 ALCS win over the Red Sox. The veteran tossed 3.1 scoreless innings. He allowed one hit, walked one, and struck out four. Unfortunately, his wild pitch in the eighth inning allowed the tying run to score, and Wheeler was credited with a blown save. Our View Wheeler has a very good regular season for the Rays, and he continued that work in Game 2. He did a great job of quieting a Boston lineup that seemed destined for double-digit runs. B.J. Upton, CF - Tampa Bay Rays October 12 @ 12:44am CT Upton drives in game-winner - Outfielder B.J. Upton homered in the Game 2 ALCS win over the Red Sox, but his biggest at-bat was a game-winning sac fly in the bottom of the 11th. Our View Upton came up with the bases loaded and one out, and he quickly got down 0-2. His flyball was shallow, but J.D. Drew's throw was up the line. It wasn't a very good at-bat by Upton, but you can't argue with the result. B.J. has four long balls already this postseason. More Player News Ben Wallace, F - Cleveland Cavaliers October 12 @ 11:17am CT Wallace practices on limited basis - Ben Wallace practiced on a limited basis Saturday, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Our View He is nursing a sprained ankle and a sore back. He has missed 15 games over the past two seasons, and his production has declined in each of his last five seasons. He could be ready for the start of the regular season, but should be avoided as a fantasy prospect in standard sized-leagues. Delonte West, G - Cleveland Cavaliers October 12 @ 11:11am CT West remains absent from camp - Delonte West remains absent from camp while attending to an undisclosed personal matter, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Our View He is a top candidate to start at shooting guard, but is missing valuable camp time, and could lose ground to Mo Williams and Wally Szczerbiak. Wally Szczerbiak, G - Cleveland Cavaliers October 12 @ 11:06am CT Szczerbiak returning to form - Wally Szczerbiak is returning to form heading into his first full season with the Cavs, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. He is more comfortable with the team and said, "I think the camp's going well. I'm getting to know everyone a little better, going through the rigors, the aches and pains with all the guys doing shooting drills like we're doing, I think that's going to go a long way toward building chemistry and trust."
Our View He is competing for the starting gig at shooting guard. He only averaged 11.5 points over 23.2 minutes per game in 2007, but averages 15 points over his career, and could get back on track as a full-time starter in 2008, making him worthy of a late-round pick. Quincy Douby, G - Sacramento Kings October 12 @ 10:44am CT Douby day-to-day - Quincy Douby is considered day-to-day after sustaining a sprained ankle, according to the Sacramento Bee. Our View Douby should see more playing time in his third season with the Kings, but won't likely be productive enough to garner fantasy interest. Beno Udrih, G - Sacramento Kings October 12 @ 10:40am CT Udrih practicing - Beno Udrih is practicing this weekend for the first time since straining his left hamstring Wednesday, according to the Sacramento Bee. Our View Udrih is questionable for Sunday's game, but the ailment isn't serious. Bobby Brown could start at point guard if Udrih is held out. Tim Thomas, F - Los Angeles Clippers October 12 @ 10:20am CT Thomas misses practice - Tim Thomas missed Saturday's practice while dealing with a strained left groin, according to the LA Times. Our View The team did not disclose the severity of his ailment. If healthy, Thomas would rank as a favorable reserve, as he averaged 12.4 points and 5.2 boards in 2007. Marcus Camby, C - Los Angeles Clippers October 12 @ 10:15am CT Camby sits out - Marcus Camby sat out Saturday's practice while nursing a bruised right heel, according to the LA Times. Our View The injury is not believed to be serious, but he could be out for 4-5 days. Camby doesn't score much (only averaged 9.1 points per game in 2007), but he is among the best defensive centers in the NBA, and should serve as a strong fantasy starter in his first campaign with the Clippers. He averaged 13.1 rebounds, 1.1 steals, and 3.6 blocks over 79 games with Denver last season. Dontell Jefferson, G - October 12 @ 10:10am CT Jefferson released by Clippers - Dontell Jefferson has been released by the Clippers, according to the LA Times. Our View The Clippers could use depth at the guard position, but Jefferson was not deemed worthy of a roster spot. More Player News Paul Ranger, D - Tampa Bay Lightning October 12 @ 10:50am CT Ranger close to returning - Paul Ranger is back on the ice and is close to making his 2008 debut with the Lightning, according to the Tampa Tribune. He is recovering from shoulder surgery. Our View If healthy, Ranger would hold value in deeper leagues as a defenseman, as he registered 31 points (10 goals) and 56 penalty minutes over 72 games in 2007. Jiri Novotny, C - Columbus Blue Jackets October 12 @ 10:02am CT Novotny should be fine - Jiri Novotny took a brutal hit (elbow to the head) by the Coyotes' Shane Doan late in the third period Saturday, had trouble getting up, but returned to play another shift, according to the Columbus Dispatch.
Our View He appeared to be fine following the game, and shouldn't miss any ice time. He already registered one assist over the first two games of the season. Fabian Brunnstrom , LW - Dallas Stars October 12 @ 9:55am CT Brunnstrom could make debut Wed. - Stars' coach Dave Tippett commented that Fabian Brunnstrom could make his NHL debut Wednesday, according to the Dallas Morning News. Our View Dallas is 0-1-1 in the early going, and Tippett is looking for players who can get the job done. Brunnstrom racked up strong numbers while playing in Sweden (posted 37 goals over 41 games with Boras HC in 2006-07) , and could be worthy of a flier in deeper leagues if he earns favorable ice time. Derek Dorsett, RW - Columbus Blue Jackets October 12 @ 9:48am CT Dorsett makes NHL debut - Derek Dorsett made his NHL debut with the Blue Jackets Saturday, according to the Columbus Dispatch. Our View He spent nine minutes in the sin bin and nine minutes, 39 seconds on the ice. The source noted that he performed well, and could be worth a look as a flier in deeper leagues that award points for penalty minutes. Ville Koistinen, D - Nashville Predators October 12 @ 9:42am CT Koistinen was scratched - Ville Koistinen was scratched from Saturday's lineup, according to the Tennessean. Our View The second-year defenseman is expected to play a key role on the power play this season, making him a worthy backup for fantasy teams. Erik Cole, RW - Edmonton Oilers October 12 @ 9:36am CT Cole to work on top line - Erik Cole will work on the Oilers' top line (at left wing) with Shawn Horcoff and Ales Hemsky, according to the Calgary Herald. Our View Edmonton will open their 2008 campaign tonight against the Avalanche. If healthy over a full season, Cole could top 30 goals. George Parros, RW - Anaheim Ducks October 12 @ 9:20am CT Parros misses practice - George Parros sat out Saturday's practice to recover from general soreness, according to the LA Times. Our View The team did not state whether he will play in Sunday night's game against Phoenix. Nathan McIver, D - Anaheim Ducks October 12 @ 9:17am CT McIver practices - Nathan McIver practiced with the Ducks for the first time Saturday since being claimed off waivers from the Kings, according to the LA Times. Our View The 23-year-old defenseman can be a physical force, but is a stay-at-home defender, and will not likely be fantasy worthy with Anaheim. More Player News Burton wins Lowe's October 11 @ 10:37pm CT Jeff Burton won the Bank of America 500 with a risky pit strategy; on the final pit stop, he chose to take fuel only and held off a number of cars with two tires. Our View The key to success this night was to get into the clean air of the lead. Every driver who ran up front was able to lead regardless of the car's strength. N'Wide: Busch wins Lowe's crashfest October 10 @ 11:26pm CT Kyle Busch scored his ninth Nationwide victory of the season and his 20th in NASCAR's Big Three divisions in a crash-marred Dollar General 300. This race was also slowed by two rain delays. Our View Busch raised the ire of his fellow drivers twice by leading the field slowly to the green; he made his own luck by stacking up the field behind him and creating multi-car accidents. Stewart wins Lowe's HH October 10 @ 6:25pm CT Tony Stewart posted the fastest average speed during Happy Hour practice with a speed of 178.779 mph during 43 laps; his fastest single lap was 10th-best at 180.953. Our View Stewart was once one of the best "cookie-cutter" races in the game, and fresh off his victory at Talladega, he could be a hidden gem. Johnson fastest in Lowe's HH October 10 @ 6:23pm CT Jimmie Johnson posted the single fastest lap in Happy Hour practice for the race 2505 with a speed of 183.007 mph. Our View His average speed of 178.759 during 36 laps was the second best on that chart. He remains our favorite to win. Hornish crashes in Lowe's HH October 10 @ 6:05pm CT Sam Hornish became the third driver to slap the wall at Lowe's in Happy Hour at the 43 minute mark, following Clint Bowyer and Kyle Busch into the SAFER barrier. Our View During the week that Patrick Carpentier was fired by Gillett-Evernham Motorsports, this has been a rough week for rookies. Hornish will almost certainly have to roll out a backup car. Bowyer slaps wall in Lowe's HH October 10 @ 5:43pm CT Clint Bowyer slapped the wall during his first lap of Happy Hour practice at Lowe's for the Bank of America 500 and seriously damaged his car; that damage was not enough to necessitate a backup car. Our View Backup car or not, this team has had a tough weekend so far and it's hard to think of him as a favorite. Edwards win Lowe's P2 October 10 @ 4:56pm CT NASCAR managed to dry the track and finish the second practice session. Carl Edwards continued to sit atop the charts with his same speed of 182.051 mph. Our View There is still one more practice session to go and with this hour getting abbreviated, that will be a better indication of who is going to be strong. Rain falls in Lowe's P2 October 10 @ 4:22pm CT Mother Nature must not want the NASCAR Sprint Cup series to practice this weekend; at the nine minute mark, rain began to fall with Carl Edwards sitting on the top of the charts at 182.051 mph. Our View If practice doesn't get back underway, Saturday's race is going to be very interesting. More Player News Sabbatini takes lead at Valero Texas Open October 11 @ 11:46pm CT Rory Sabbatini grabbed the 54-hole lead with his third-round 63 today on the links of La Cantera Golf Club, home of the Valero Texas Open, according to PGATour.com. Sabbatini, a four-time PGA TOUR winner, is at 14-under par 196, one stroke better than Zach Johnson. Our View The 63 is one shot off Sabbatini's career-best of 62, which he shot in the final round of the 2006 Sony Open in Hawaii (8 under) and the third round of the 2007 Crowne Plaza Invitational (8 under). Sabbatini had also posted 63 three times previously in his career, including the opening round of the 2003 Valero Texas Open. Leonard makes surge at Texas Open October 11 @ 11:42pm CT Defending champion Justin Leonard birdied the final hole for a 6-under-par 64 in third-round action today at the Valero Texas Open, according to PGATour.com. Our View When Leonard started the day, he was tied for 68th place. When he finished play at 11:50 a.m., he was at 7-under 203 and tied for fifth place. At the end of the day, Leonard's total found him tied for 19th. Tway posts strong day at Valero Texas Open October 11 @ 11:36pm CT Veteran Bob Tway made a run up the leaderboard with a 6-under 64 in today's third round at the Valero Texas Open, according to PGATour.com. He now sits at 202 (-8) through three days, seven strokes off the lead. Our View Tway, who tied for second here in 2003, finished his round with a bogey at the par-4, 18th hole and is at 8-under 202. Tway is making his 16th start in this event and has made the cut in his last nine starts here. Wilkinson makes move at Valero Texas Open October 11 @ 11:32pm CT New Zealand rookie Tim Wilkinson moved into contention with a 7-under 63 in today's third round at the Valero Texas Open, according to PGATour.com. The round is one stroke off his season/career best -- an 8-under 62 in the third round of the 2008 Sony Open in Hawaii. Wilkinson is tied for third after 54 holes, three back of leader Rory Sabbatini. Our View Wilkinson entered the week No. 112 on the money list, making 13 of 25 cuts with a pair of top-10 finishes -- a tie for sixth at the Puerto Rico Open presented by Banco Popular and 3rd at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Wilkinson is at 11-under 199, which matches his low 54-hole total in 2008 (Sony Open in Hawaii). For the week, the lefty from Palmerston North is 1 under on par 3s, 8 under on par 4s and 2 under on par 5s. Z-Johnson makes big move at Texas Open October 11 @ 11:29pm CT Former Masters champion (2007) Zach Johnson moved near the top of the leaderboard with his 8-under 62 in third-round action today at the Valero Texas Open, according to PGATour.com. Johnson is making his first start on TOUR since The Barclays (Aug. 21-24), where he missed the cut. Johnson was nearly perfect Saturday, hitting 13 of 14 fairways and 17 of 18 greens. Johnson is at 13-under 197, which matches the lowest 54-hole total of his career (2007, THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola). His 62 is the second-lowest score of his career, bettered only by a 10-under-par 60 in round three of THE TOUR Championship last year. Our View Johnson has only one top-10 finish in 21 starts this year, a tie for ninth at the World Golf Championships-CA Championship back in March. He comes into the event No. 125 on the money list. His lead held up most of the afternoon, until Rory Sabbatini birdied the final hole to finish at 14-under par. Stroud takes lead at Texas Open to weekend October 10 @ 8:18pm CT Grobes, Texas, native and Lamar University graduate Chris Stroud shot a 6-under-par 64 Friday to move to 10 under after two days at this week's Valero Texas Open, leading Paul Goydos, Tim Petrovic and Tim Herron by two strokes, according to PGATour.com. Stroud, who has been battling knee and wrist injuries for most of the 2008 season, shot his career-best round on the PGA TOUR (63) in the third round of last year's Valero Texas Open. He finished tied for sixth here last year for one of his two career top-10 finishes on the PGA TOUR. Our View This is the first time in Chris Stroud's career that he has held or shared the lead in a PGA TOUR event following any round. The 36-hole leader has gone on to win 18 of 42 stroke-play events on the PGA TOUR this year. At 26 years old, Stroud is attempting to become the 14th winner on the PGA TOUR in their 20s in 2008 vs. 7 winners in their 20s for 48 events in 2007. Goydos on the move at Texas Open October 10 @ 8:14pm CT Two-time PGA TOUR winner Paul Goydos shot his second consecutive 4-under-par 66 and is two off the lead at 8-under par at this week's Valero Texas Open, according to PGATour.com. Our View Goydos, who lost in a memorable playoff to Sergio Garcia at THE PLAYERS this year, is playing in this event for the 12th time in his career, dating back to 1993 and has never missed the cut. He has finished in the top 10 (tied for eighth in 2006, tied for seventh in 2003) in his previous two appearances here at La Cantera. Rookie Jones working to make noise at Texas Open October 10 @ 8:12pm CT Rookie Matt Jones, who entered the week ranked no. 124 on the PGA TOUR Money List, shot a 6-under-par 64 to move to 7 under par for the tournament and is tied for fifth through two rounds at the Valero Texas Open, according to PGATour.com. Our View The 28-year-old has two fourth-place ties finishes in his rookie season. He held a share of the 54-hole lead at the Honda Classic with Luke Donald and Mark Calcavecchia. He hit his tee shot in the water on the par-3 17th on Sunday and made double bogey, eventually finishing three behind winner Ernie Els.
