The Drury Wrestling Team has had another outstanding season and never before have we had so many qualify for programs beyond the high school level. Kevin Iwasa-Madge heads to Ecuador for the Junior Pan-Am Championships in mid-June. Duncan Moffat is on the National Cadet Pan-Am Team and he goes to El Salvador in July. Alan Moffat, now at the University of Guelph, has made the Junior World Team and will compete at the World Championships in Turkey in August. In addition, Bobby Fillman and Duncan Moffat have been selected to Ontario’s Canada Summer Games program and will participate in a series of camps and training trips between now and the 2009 Summer Games.None of these programs are fully funded so we are doing a number of fundraisers to help reduce their costs. We will have a food booth at the Milton Downtown Street Festival on June 7 so stop by and say hello. Even better, join us for Celebrity Server Night at Boston Pizza on Monday, June 16th. Our wrestlers will be helping serve and we get back a percentage of all sales that night. To kill two birds with one stone, we have decided to have an alumni meeting that same night, 7:30 pm at Boston Pizza to discuss the next reunion/old-timers extravaganza. That will happen sometimes next year to coincide with Mooch’s impending retirement.We welcome all to join in not only to begin the planning (the last planning meeting was almost as fun as the reunion itself) but to meet our star athletes and show them your support. Kevin will be flying out on the 18th and nothing would inspire him more than a big alumni turnout on Monday, June 16. We need to make reservations for that night so either e-mail or call Simon or Mooch (that is best) by June 10 or call Boston Pizza at 905-864-1411. See you there.
Wednesday, April 2, 20082008 Canadian National Championships
Congratulations to Alan Moffat on winning the 55 kg Junior Nationals in Guelph. Moffat went 4-0 on his way to the title winning the final 2-0/1-1. The final was somewhat anti-climatic though compared to the semi against the heavily favoured Vince Cormier of New Brunswick. Cormier beat Moffat in the National final 2 years ago as Moffat seperated his shoulder in the process. Moffat also lost to him in the CIU semi's a few weeks ago. Today, Cormier won round 1 but Moffat came back with some late points to win round 2. Cormier went up 4-0 in round 3 but Moffat fought back late in the round with a 3 and a 1 for what seemed to be the victory. NB protested the 3 points though and won the protest. The 1 round rematch seemed to be headed for the clinch until Cormier scored with a half minute to go. Moffat came back to score with 4 seconds left ( forced him out of bounds ) but Cormier attacked again at the whistle nearly scoring as Moffat held on with a switch. The round ended just as Cormier seemed to get behind but the officials ruled that Moffat fought off the attack. The video was reviewed in Moffats favour but once again the decision was protested. This time the protest was disallowed though and Moffat could breathe a sigh of relief. All in all, quite an entertaining and nerve wracking spectacle. With the win, Moffat qualifies for the Junior national team and will head to the Junior Worlds in Turkey this July. To make things even better, after the match they announced Moffat as the Outstanding Junior wrestler.Kevin Iwasa-Madge earned his 1st national freestyle medal. After losing a tough 3 round decsion in his 1st match, he came back to win 3 straight including a rematch victory against his 1st round opponent in the bronze final (2-1/2-1). He fought a gutsy match to capture the medal. He also wrestled perhaps the best match of his life, defeating Jake Needham 6-0/4-1 in a wrestle off for the National B team and a spot on the Canadian team for the Pan-Am championships in Equador.We've also posted the 66kg Senior final with Chris Prickett vs Ryan Weicker.
