Two major approaches exist:The coach prefers a particular formation and recruits players to fit, or trains available players to conform.The coach evaluates available talent, the likely opposition, and then selects a system most suited for the circumstances.Both philosophies are valid. What is important is to recognize the particular situation and choose the best approach. For example, with a short pre-season and little or no recruiting, philosophy # 2 is likely more successful.
