This year’s men’s national tournament proved to be as competitive as expected. On Thursday in the first round there were a couple of close calls. Fourth seeded Austin Deaf Toros facing a young feisty Denver team were pushed to the brink and narrowly escaped with a seven point win, 69-62. Arizona Desert Fire fought off another youthful bunch in Mississippi when the youngins fought their way back from an early 15 point deficit and pulled within six only to succumb to the veteran squad in the end 107-75. Bridgeport and Carolinas cruised through their opening round wins respectfully. GIDC and East Zone both handled business as predicted. The only considerable upset amongst the regional champions in the first round was WSAD-Chicago, a ninth seed, knocking off eighth seeded Utah 92-70. Also New Jersey upset MAAD champions St. Louis by three in a nail-biter.Second round action had even more spirited matchups. AZDF and Carolinas faced off once and as in the past the game went down to the wire. These two teams have a long history of second round head to head clashes. AZDF prevailed winning 76-74 in the grudge match. Bridgeport and Austin met and this game was exciting in the early goings until the Toros seized the game in the second half winning 77-54. East Zone and GIDC crushed their second round opponents respectfully. On Friday the final four was officially set. There were no surprises amongst these teams. Each team had been to the final four for the second consecutive year. Austin, AZDF and GIDC for the third consecutive year have reached this point at the nationals. Austin played against East Zone who had not been seriously challenged in their first two games. Austin behind Anton Jackson’s valiant effort of 38 points 15 rebound performance. The Toros didn’t have enough to withstand the balance attack of the East Zone. Mike Kent dominated the Toros in the paint which opened up the perimeter game for their shooters. GIDC’s Robert Haney overwhelmed AZDF in the other final four meeting. Haney scored 31 points 10 rebounds and 5 assist for the veteran squad of Indianapolis. The final day had arrived with the weekend coming to a close. As always the consolation games were played in the morning. WSAD defeated New Jersey for seventh place. Playing for fifth place for the fifth consecutive year, Bridgeport lost to Carolinas, 89-68. AZDF faced Austin in a rematch of last year’s semi-final with different results this time around. Austin captured third place with a 72-59 victory and their best finish ever. The championship game was an exciting one. The fans were very much attracted to the two finalists, GIDC and East Zone. Led by Eldin Dorn in the middle GIDC took an early 19-12 lead only to see East Zone overtake the lead 26-21, with timely three point shooting by Luther Weedon. The game saw several lead changes before the end of the first half with East Zone taking a two point margin into the lockerroom, 40-38. In the second half East Zone led by as many as ten points only to see it chipped away with free throw shooting and scrappy scores by GIDC. East Zone had to finish the game without their biggest component, Mike Kent, in the middle. Kent suffered a knee sprain when he slipped in the paint early in the second half and never returned. East Zone managed to play well without their big man but lacking presence in the paint allowed GIDC to focus even more on East Zone shooters. With a chance to win East Zone failed to convert key free throws down the stretch which allowed the heroic efforts of Haney. With 10 seconds left in regulation Haney corralled missed three point attempt by Matt Johnson, faked one defender, dribbled once to his left and unleashed a 22 foot three pointer which tied the game with only three seconds. In overtime GIDC controlled their own destiny by limiting East Zone to only three points in the extra period. Desperately missing Kent the young East Zone team made every possible effort to win but to no avail were they able to recover from the Haney miracle. Haney was named tournament MVP while Dorn and Brian Bippus of GIDC, Mark Hedrick of Carolinas, Sekoe White of East Zone and Anton Jackson of Austin were named first team all tournament respectfully. Second team all tournament honors went to Martise Colston, Orion Palmer, Mike Kent, Roderick Brown and Fred Thompson. Finally, a few things to ponder, can Haney win a third consecutive crown? Will the Valencias return to the circuit? Are the legends done, David Hamilton, Kevin Smith, Brian Bippus, Mike Kent, Mike Torres? Is Texas the next destination for the national tournament? Tune in next time, same time, same channel. Women Prove To Be No Small Task Orlando, FL- In the 18th annual USADB National Tournament the women had their own score to settle. This year feature the return of several key players of the recent past. The DC Hawks brought along some fire power this time around. Two perennial all stars Touria Boren (formerly Ouahid) and Jessica Duhon (formerly Whitley) both returned after giving birth two babies last year. The motherly clad team was not to be overlooked. Minnepaul women had the return of Ronda Jo Miller whose Minnepaul team was a 5th seed. The Arizona Black Widows had some difficulties getting their entire team to the tournament due to the recent happenings with American Airlines and their inspection process which canceled over 2.500 flights during a three day period. The drama couldn’t have been better. Despite the delays the women’s tournament got off to a big bang. In first round action of the 12 team tournament the top four seeded teams Arizona, DC Hawks, Utah, and WSAD each had a first round bye. Piedmont and Mississippi Ladies squared off in the 8th and 9th seed match ups. Piedmont had the services of Tasha Lemke who burned the Mississippi team for 28 points. Using an array of skills she helped her team cruise to an opening round win. Mississippi was down 31-12 at the half. In the second half they fought back to make it a respectable game before finally submitting 63-48. Minnepaul walked all over Vermont 80-37. Rochester stomped Providence 78-30 and Olathe Twister had little trouble putting away Talladega 63-46.Second round action was expected to be far more competitive than the earlier games on Thursday. Minnepaul was too much for 4th seeded WSAD. Ronda Jo Miller and Rhonda Johnson left no doubt their intentions were to advance further. WSAD didn’t bring enough ammunition besides the gunner Abigail Moose. In the other game Rochester took Shari Bailey of Utah best shot on the chin using a balance scoring attack to upend the ladies of Utah. DC Hawks and Arizona both rolled through their opponents setting up two highly competitive semifinal games. The Black Widows took on Minnepaul with Miller and Johnson leading the way for the Minnepaul but those two would not be enough to turn back the defending champions. Ida Dotson and Jenn Decuir presented a match up problem for the North Star state team. Dotson tallied usual big numbers with 26 and Decuir played a supporting role with 13 to help the Black Widows to a 65-50 win. Miller scored at will as expected finishing with 28 points and Johnson capped in 13. It would not be nearly enough to advance to the championship game. For the other semifinal game DC Hawks looked to returned to the title game for the second year in a row, hoping to redeem their title game loss to Arizona. DC had to fight off a hungry Rochester team. Using the veteran experience of Boren and Nannette Virnig, DC was able to muster an 11 point win over the young Rochester team to set up the rematch of last year’s championship game.On Saturday in the third place game Rochester had no answer for the 34 points of Miller. Minnepaul held off the young crew and walked away with an 11 point margin to capture third place. In the afternoon the Black Widows faced DC Hawks for a repeat of last year’s final. Only this time it was expected to be a wire to wire battle. In the early going one would think it was going to be close considering the see-saw action in the first half. DC behind the savvy shooting of Boren was able to take a very slim lead at the end of the first half, 26-24. Both teams played a solid defensive game but DC main cog in the middle, Stacy Nowak was a key to them staying in the game. Nowak physical presence was obvious when she was on the floor. Whenever she left the game the Black Widows were able to breathe a little more. The Black Widows were led by Ida Dotson who was in foul trouble for a long stretch of the second half. When Dotson went to the bench the Black Widows turned to Jenn Decuir to carry them over the hump. Decuir drove relentlessly to the basket either drawing a foul or finishing for an easy two points. Also veteran Janel Birrenkott made timely three pointers to keep DC at bay. When Dotson returned to the game with fresh legs she took over and carried her team to a second consecutive title. Dotson was named MVP of the tournament led the champions with 17 points, Decuir finished with 13 and Birrenkott totaled 12. First team all tournament were, Rondo Jo Miller- Minnepaul, Laura Rushing- Mississippi Lady, Abigail Moose- WSAD, Shari Bailey- Utah, Ida Dotson- Arizona Black Widows. Second team all tournament were, Tasha Lemke- Piedmont, Claire Pedziwiatr- Rochester, Touria Boren- DC Hawks, Michelle Skiwzgirid- Rochester, Janel Birrenkott- Arizona Black Widows.Who will be named the next champion? Can the Black Widows do it again? Will DC Hawks find their touch to return and finally upend the Black Widows? Will Rochester prove to be the team of the future? Can Minnepaul recapture their glory days or is Ronda Jo simply not enough? There are so many questions and the only way to answer is to show up next year. With the addition of Restricted Free Agency any of the elite teams could gain an edge, add or lose key elements to current rosters. Check back again this time next year and see if the questions have been answered.
