What do you get when you cross sheer power and grace on a golf course with multi-million dollar endorsement contracts? Quite possibly the most marketable athlete since Michael Jordan. You guessed it, Tiger Woods. This 24-year old golf sensation was on his way to affluence within his first month of turning pro. While he was receiving a $297,000 check for winning a pro tournament in 1996, he was signing deals with Nike and Titleist for $60 million.i wanna be a tigerTiger is practically the epitome of sports marketing as he transcends the sport itself, which is exactly what makes him unique. Nike CEO Philip Knight explains that every time they discover a one of a kind athlete like this one, they have to "adopt" him. The reason behind this is that such an athlete is bound to result in something unique no matter what. Presently, Tiger is the world's greatest athlete and he is getting compensated accordingly. Fans across the globe are glued to their television sets to see what his next exploit will be, even if they don't know the difference between a 3-wood and a 9-iron. Tiger has elevated the seemingly mundane game of golf to another level. In what seems to be a Happy Gilmore -like affliction to Tiger, young fans are drawn to this virgin game of theirs. The sports demographics are expanding, and this is what companies like Nike are aiming for. Not only has Nike taken Tiger under its wing while signing a 5-year contract worth about $40 million, Nike also started a cult following in doing so. Tiger has just turned pro and has a good 20 to 40 years left in his career. All these attractive factors are what make this cub of the course so valuable.putting a price on your headFollowing in the footsteps of Nike, other companies have seen the value of associating themselves with an up-and-coming celebrity. Nike Chairman and CEO, Knight, forecasted that Woods would "change the way people view the game of golf." Many more companies have hopped on the sports athlete endorsement bandwagon.
