I think you'll find the Forum is a lot of fun ... Enjoy! Dino #2 Brown County State Park Cannondale Midwest Racingsquirrel writes "As promised Brown County offered some pain and suffering for those not in the greatest condition. Most of the Cannondale Midwest Indy crew are north siders so we spend a lot of time on flat trails. Brown County State Park is the flagship Indiana Mountain Bike Trail. It is considered to be one of the best destinations for any Midwest mountain biker. It is a great place to camp or rent a cabin and enjoy the southern Indiana scenery. Speaking of scenery.... For the onlookers of the race the only thing they saw was a lot of riders maxing out in in the first half mile of the race. The thoughts going through our heads were: "Oh my gosh, I didn't know my heart could beat that fast" or "I'm such an idiot for not doing more hill work outs" or "I will survive, even if I have do this whole race in granny gear."The trail has some great winding down hill and the famous Aynes Climb which is slow and steady, unless you're Chris Hruska, who loves to climb. This is Chris' trail and his results show it.Chris Hruska came in 9th overall in Sport and 1st in his class. Cory Swihart Came in 36th overall in Expert and 9th in his age group. Tom Jones was the story of the day. He came to the race after being sick for most of the week and stopped during the race to barf 3 times. Despite being a painful trail Tom rode it anyway and still pulled off 46th overall in sport and 7th in his age group. Kody Hughes dominated the Junior division with a 1st place overall including a nearly 5 minute lead over 2nd place. TJ Keene came in 36th overall in Sport and 10th in his age group. As a team we are ranked 6th overall in points. There are 13 teams on the roster. All of the teams except for 3 have 5 riders riding for points. We are one of the teams with 4 riders listed. A respectable place to be. Tom Jones came to the team to late to be added in the stats.Brown County is a great venue and despite the intense physical effort it demands during the race it is a versatile trail. If you decide to go there just to enjoy a ride, the climbs are gradual enough for a comfortable ride. The woods are very nice with no highway noise and all sorts of wildlife. We all enjoy the trail. We look forward to next year." Posted by webmaster on Sunday, June 29 @ 09:16:05 MST (11 reads) (Read More... | Score: 0) Pete Colan Recovering from Crash! SportCrafters RollersPete ColanUpdate! June 7 2008"[I'm] able to work a few hours a day.  This halo is pretty heavy, and since it's screwed into my head it's not only a nuisance at the shop, it's a pretty poor store fixture for customers looking to cycling for improved health. "Proof that his sense of humor is still in tact! UPDATE! June 6, 2008"I'd like to extend my thanks to all my friends for your thoughtfulness and prayers this week. It really helped me and my family to have so many supportive friends. Details; after a short mountain bike race on Sunday, I was doing a cooldown ride and jumped an obstacle at relatively low speed that I thought was more benign than it was. I end-do'ed, landing directly on my head. The top three vertebrae are cracked, C1 and C2 are each fractured in two places and C3 is fractured in only one place. I could have easily been a statistic for the morque, or more likely set up for a powered wheelchair but instead I'm now recovering at home with a halo brace, which will be on for about 3 months. Yes, it's a real pain but the alternatives are much worse....so I'll take it!"Pete Colan Just 2 days after his retirement from Bosch, and moments after finishing 9th in the Rum Village Time Trial Race (NIMBA Series), Pete crashed during a fun lap and has fractured 3 vertebrae. He has 2 fractures in vertebrae #1 - 2 fractures in vertebrae #2 - and 1 fracture in vertebrae #3. He received his halo last night, and was up and walking around the hospital unit today. Sheri, Pete's wife, reported that he was in good spirits and should be returning home for the weekend ... if all continues to go well. As serious of condition as this is, he has no numbness, tingling or paralysis ... he was truly blessed. Fortunately, he was wearing a helmet ... and kids, this is why you always wear one! I am not familiar with this Rum Village course ... but the incident occurred on a bridge ... and it involved his front wheel getting caught between the boards. Please keep Pete in your prayers and best wishes! Posted by joel on Wednesday, June 04 @ 15:09:08 MST (39 reads) (Read More... | Score: 0) Spring races in full session! Cannondale Midwest RacingOn April 30th, the 2nd of 3 races at the Fast Lap Series was held at the John Bryan State Park near Yellow Springs, OH. The second race turned out to be another great evening of racing with cool weather with damp to dry trails. Dan Mascret raced even though his legs were still hurting from the Vutures Knob race the previous Sunday. For Dan, it felt like he had no power to push through the trail, but amazingly he trimmed 1 1/2 minutes of the previous weeks time and finished 2nd. Matt Weiner also raced, but fell back to a 4th place finish after a strong finish the previous week. I might have an incident with one of the famous tight sections and an introduction to his new friend, Mr. Tree. Embarassed On May 3rd, in the DINO Series the rain held off long enough for CMR Indianapolis crew to get some great results at the Winona Lake Trail near Warsaw, IN. In the expert class Cory Swihart brought out his new Scalpel. The expert class is extremely competitive this year with many of the very strong group of riders from last years sport open class. He took 32nd overall. Chris Hruska started his year with a 1oth place overall in Sport with a 3rd place finish in the Sport Open division. Chris is an excellent climber and we expect his skills to really show at the next race in Brown County on June 1 where a long slow painful climb awaits us all. The newest member of Cannondale Midwest is Tom Jones, a former Cannondale wrench, and current floor manger at Bike Garage North. Tom brought out his new Scalpel Team and brought in a 4th place finish in the Sport 30-34 age group, the most competitive age group in the sport class. Chris loaned Tom his extra CMR jersey so he wouldn't be without colors for the race. Tom took 26th overall in Sport.TJ Keene, racing in the "refuse to believe I'm closing in on 40" age group in Sport took 3rd in his age group and 16th overall in Sport. TJ attributes his nearly 15 minute improvement over last years time to the help of former CMR team mate Jake Stechman's training program and his Taurine 1. He's stronger in fitness and about 12 pounds lighter in body and bike weight over last year.Winona is a great trail and we will be back for the 24 hours of DINO in September. On June 1 we will tackle Brown County for DINO #2, one of the most challenging and scenic trails in Indiana.Team standings have not been posted as yet. DINO has team points competition which is another area CMR should shine. Meanwhile, at the Cotton Mill Preserve near Fayetteville, TN at the Dirt, Sweat, & Gears 12 hr endurance mountain bike race it rained all Friday night before the race. But it stopped just as Nick, Marty, Robin & Shari were getting ready to head to the race from the hotel. Robin had been voted to take the first lap - and it turned out to be a good choice since he was riding SS and the course was really really muddy. Robin's first lap was pretty brutal. There were broken bikes (derailures and hangers) galore coming by our tent (which was placed right on the finishing stretch), but Robin made it back in one piece. His bike was messy, but he was completely clean.Shari decided to go out for our second lap and the conditions were remarkably improved. We met her about 4.5 miles in at the "top" of the course and she was smiling and having fun with her new bike! By the time Nick went out for our 3rd lap, the sun was out and the humidity was in. We spotted him about 2 miles from the end at a "whoop de doo" section and his jersey was unzipped as far as it would go Shocked - but he was making great time. Marty went out for the 4th lap and the course was perfect. It was tacky and fast and crazy fun. The crew tried to meet me at "the top", but miscalculated the timing (I think Fried Pies were involved) and they missed seeing Marty crest. By the time she got back to the tent, it was empty. A few moments later, after leaving the course to pass the baton, Nick found Robin was getting his bike ready. Nick and Shari were still on the course waiting at the "whoop de doo" section.By the time Robin entered the course, it was perfect and he couldn't get back out there fast enough. He really wanted to get in a good lap. And that he did - I think he ended up being more than 30 minutes faster on his second lap than on his first. When Robin finished his second lap, we might have had time for one more lap, but the team decided that it was just time to chill out instead. They finished 22nd out of 25 teams. No mechanicals, no crashes and no injuries. In the end, the weather was fantastic and the day was just perfect. Tons of fun!In the Michigan Mountain Biking Association Championship Point Series at the Fort Custer Recreation Area near Augusta, MI, the team had a great showing. Hugh Smallwood continued his initiation in the Open Elite class with another top 10 finish. In the Exper 29 & Under, Rafael Kronenber and Reid Arnott worked together to come in 13th and 14th place. In the Exper 30 - 39, Mark Todd finished a solid 12th. In the Exper 40 - 49, Bernie Wendel continued our team performace in 14th place. In the Exper 50+ Steve Kinley (Sobe / Cannondale) and Pete Colan (Spin Zone) finish in 3rd and 4th place. In the Sport Class, Jeff Patrosso took out his new Scalpel Carbon and finished 13th in the 35 - 39. We also had Mark Hoinka in the 35 - 39 and Jen Hoinka in the Womens 30 - 39.Mike's Xray But the story of the day went to Mike Fry! On the stair steped decent, just before cardiac hill, Mike caught more air than he needed and went for a head over tea kettle ride down the rest of the steps. His hero's would be his fellow team mates in Mark and Jen Hoinka who each stopped during their events to assist Mike. After using his Camel Bak to create a sling, Mike made his way back to the parking lot. A trip to the hospital would disclose that he had broken his collar bone. Mike has since had surgery to pin and plate the bone and is well on to recovery. Posted by joel on Friday, May 30 @ 00:00:00 MST (46 reads) (Read More... | Score: 5) Cannondale Demo Truck Event!!! General InterestDemo DayOn Saturday we participated in the the annual Bike Demo day at the Island Lake Recreation Area near Brighton, MI. We supported the Cannondale Demo Truck throughout the entire day, the site was jammed with potential Cannondale buyers. Of the over 400 people that were registered for the event, we estimated that we were able to serve between 150 and 200 demo rides! That meant we had a new demo rider hitting the road or trail every 2 minutes. The Cannondale demo rig holds 50 bikes and was the most impressive of the factory representatives. It currently is stocked with mostly the SuperSix and Rize models. But there was also the Moto, the Scalpel, and Taurine available as well. Our role was to support Troy Laffey and Jason Edinger in any way we could. If this was cleaning bikes, changing peadals, or just sharing our experiences with Cannondale bikes. Thank you to Steve Kinley, Robin and Shari Scurr, Shawn Schaffert, John Burt , Joel Miller for supporting this event and Georgina and Brian Leary for taking the pictures! Cannondale Midwest RacingThe racing season is now in full swing as nearly all of the race series have started. In the first race of the Fast Lap Series at the John Bryan State Park near Yellow Springs, OH, Dan Mascret and Matt Weiner worked on their spring fitness in this weekly Time Trial series. For the first time this spring, they had dry trails for the race. The course is flat but very tight and twisty with many turns that bring you to a near stop to navigate the trees. If you can carry your speed, and not smack into the trees, you have a shot at the podium. Matt raced in the Sport Open class with all age groups and finished just off the podium in 6th place. Dan raced in the Novice Open class and took the lead in the 2 out of 3 series championship with a 1st Place finish. Because this is a midweek race, the racers need to deal with fading light and long shadows. Dan thought that his Rudy Project Ekynox Sport glasses with the Racing Red Lenses made a big difference. It was a great day for racing, with 70 degrees, sunny skies with dry and dusty trail conditions for the second race in the Ohio Mountain Bike Championship at Vulture's Knob near Wooster, OH. Wes Jones and Ryan Knopf contributed a few weekends to implementing many of the trail improvements during the last year. This has made the 6.5 mile course more rider friendly. But this is still a very technical course with many tight corners and a few obstacles that are still just too risky to attempt during a race. In its typical style, the Knob claimed many riders as its victims with its steep descents fast switchbacks and many very scary narrow bridges that destroyed many racers day. The team thrived in these conditions and had great results. Wes Jones raced in the Veteran Open class with some super fast competition and finished a hard earned 3rd place. Matt Weiner raced in the 15-18 Sport class and battled the entire race in a group of 5 riders and had to fight hard for a 3rd place finish. Dan Mascret raced in the Novice Masters class and had a rough day but still managed a 3rd place finish. In the second event for the series, the team accomplished three podium finishes with all garnering 3rd place finishes. Bernie Wendel At Bloomer Park near Rochester Hills, MI, racers competed on a course that uses the ridgeline above the Clinton River in the Tailwind Enterprises Michigan USA CYCLING State Series. The main feature of this course is a series of descending switchbacks that take you from the ridgeline to the river's edge. The trail at this point is made up of rocks, roots, and clay. In dry conditions, this is technically challenging with the rider accelerating with each pass across the ravine. In wet conditions, it becomes greasy and potentially treacherous. But the conditions for this race were near perfect with a firm trail that only had intermittent soft spots, blue sky and temperature in the upper 60's. With his first race after moving up from Expert to the Open Elite class, Hugh Smallwood scored a top 10 finish. Racing in the Expert 18-Under, Rafael Kronenberg took a 3rd place finish and Bernie Wendel recovered from last weekend in 14th place in the Expert 40-49 class. In the Sport Division, Jeff Patrosso came in 9th place in the Men 30-34, Bryan Wissman battled with his chain and still finished in 12th position in the Men 40-44, Joe Zakrin in the 45-49 came through in 8th with an honorable mention to Rebecca Wissman for winning the Women 24-Under. For our Beginner division racers, Ginger Wissman dominated the Women 14-Under with a 1st place finish. Oliver Wissman successfully finished his first race for the 2008 season on his new Caffeine and Shawn Schaffert finished just off the podium in 6th place. The first race for the DRT Race Series was at the Winona Lake Trail near Warsaw, IN. This is a very popular course that is used for many events. This is a fast course that is a blend of technical and open field single track and is a dream for single speed racers. To take a win at this course, you need to have good legs for the entire 9 miles. Cory's RotorIn his warm up before the race, Cory Swihart, squeezed his left brake lever, and trashed his front brake rotor. Although he attempted to compete without a front brake, the rock garden was too risky to be safely attempted with only a rear brake. Kody Hughes took 2nd overall for the Beginner Men and 1st for the 18 and under class! Next weekend we have races at the Winona Lake Trail near Warsaw, IN in the DINO Series and at the Cotton Mill Preserve near Fayetteville, TN for the Dirt, Sweat, & Gears 12 hr endurance mountain bike race on Saturday May 3rd and in the Michigan Mountain Biking Association Championship Point Series at the Fort Custer Recreation Area near Augusta, MI on Sunday, May 4th. Please check out our Photo Gallery from this week's events!
