Summer Girl's Basketball Camp Information
The
King's women's basketball program first began in 1974-75. The
Lady Monarch program has made great strides in recent years as King's
has emerged as one of the top programs in both the Middle Atlantic Conference
and NCAA Division III.
The 2006-07 season, marked the
13th consecutive year the Lady Monarchs qualified for the conference
playoffs and have earned four trips to the NCAA Division III National
Tournament since 2000.
King's won the 2002-03 MAC Freedom Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA National Tournament
"Sweet 16". In 2001-02, King's won the MAC Freedom regular season
championship and advanced to the NCAA Division III National "Elite Eight" while concluding a school-record 25-4
campaign.
The 2000-01 Lady Monarchs won
the MAC Freedom tournament title and advanced to the round of 32 in the
national tournament. In 1999-2000,
King's finished second in the MAC
Championships and advanced to the NCAA
National Tournament, reaching the "Sweet 16".
Prior to
the 1999-2000 season, King's had received three consecutive berths in
the post-season Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships, including
the team title in 1998.
Since the start of the program, 41 players
have been named to MAC all-star teams. After the MAC realigned into the
current Freedom and Commonwealth format in 1993-94, 26 players have been
named Freedom Conference all-stars. King's has produced 15 Division III
All-Americans, including 14 since the 1995 campaign.
On
six occasions, Lady Monarchs have been named MAC Freedom Conference most
valuable players, including Tiffini Varrasse in 2003, Nikki Kingston in
2002, Denise Igo in 2001 and Joanne Polakoski who was the Freedom League
MVP in 1999 and 2000. She was also honored as Columbus Multimedia Division
III "National Player of the Year" in 2000. Mary Beth Bowler
also earned MVP honors in 1981 and 1982.
Elaine Colyer (1998) and Polakoski (2000) were also named as one of 10
finalists for the prestigious Josten's Trophy, an athletic and academic
award presented to the Division III "National Player of the Year."
Denise Igo was named MAC Freedom Co-MVP as a senior in 2000-01.
The Lady Monarchs have a strong track record
for academic excellence as the team has produced numerous MAC Academic
All-Stars. In 1996, King's was ranked as the 19th best academic team in
the nation by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association after posting
a 3.22 team grade-point average.
In 2001 King's was 21st with a
3.31 team GPA., then ranked eighth in 2003 at 3.440. The Lady Monarchs
were ranked 16th in 2004 with a 3.442 before standing 12th in 2005 with
a 3.438 GPA. In 2006, King's was ranked 22nd nationally with a 3.348 GPA
The Lady Monarchs have logged
the miles in recent years, competing in tournaments in Virginia, West
Virginia, Massachusetts, Maryland, Florida, Washington D.C., and twice
to the Bahamas. The team will also play in a tournament in Cancun, Mexico in
December of 2007.
The Lady Monarchs annually compete in the nationally-respected,
eight-team Marymount Tip-Off Classic which the Lady Monarchs won in 1999-2000,
2001-02, 2002-03, 2004-05, and 2006-07.
The team plays a 25-game regular-season and hosts the annual Lady Monarch Classic in early January, while competing in at least one other
tournament during the season.
King's plays its home games in Scandlon Gymnasium, a
3,200-seat facility that stands as one of the largest in the MAC.
The King's Women's Basketball Booster Club also plays a key role in
fund-raising to aid the program throughout the course of every season.
