2008-09 Men's Basketball schedule announced
Head coach Brett Reed has announced the Lehigh men’s basketball 2008-09 schedule, which includes 14 home dates, three matchups versus teams that participated in the 2008 postseason, and 14 games against teams that won 15 or more games a season ago. Lehigh tips its 2008-09 season off on Saturday, November 15 when the Mountain Hawks head to New Jersey to take on St. Peter’s. Reed earned his first head coaching victory versus the Peacocks last November at Stabler Arena.
Szalachowski earns spot on NABC Honor Roll
Rising senior Matt Szalachowski recently earned a spot on the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honor Roll, which recognizes collegiate basketball student-athletes who excel in academics. Szalachowski earned a 3.48 grade point average during the 2008 spring semester and carries a 3.62 overall GPA as an accounting major. This past season Szalachowski appeared in all 29 games for the Mountain Hawks, starting 28 of them. He averaged 4.7 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists, while shooting 70 percent from the free throw line.
Lehigh places four on Academic Honor Roll
The Patriot League announced the 2008 Men’s Basketball Academic Honor Roll on Monday and Lehigh placed four student-athletes on the list. A total of 27 men’s basketball student-athletes from around the league were honored, led by Lafayette’s Matt Betley who was chosen as the Scholar Athlete of the Year. To be eligible for the honor roll, a student-athlete must obtain a 3.2 grade point average and be awarded a varsity letter.
Hall named Arthur Ashe Award recipient
A trio of Lehigh student-athletes was recently recognized as recipients of the 2008 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar Award, including swimmers CalvinJohn Smiley and Anne Rodriguez and Marquis Hall from the men’s basketball program. The award is given to student-athletes of color who exemplify high standards in academics, athletics, and service to the community. The winners must meet the following criteria: have completed one full academic year at their respective institutions, earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher, be an active member of an intercollegiate athletic team, and demonstrated a record of campus or community service.
Happy Campers
The Lehigh men’s basketball program held its annual day camp from June 16-20. Over 50 campers were in attendance every day and by the end of the week, they each left with smiles on their faces. They were exhausted, but smiled nonetheless. “I thought the camp was a good week. It was a fun experience for our campers. They were involved with basketball and had a chance to work on their skills, compete and ultimately just have a good time together,” head coach Brett Reed said.
