The club is a member of and competes in the Yarra Junior Football League and plays matches against other teams in Melbourne's eastern suburbs. The club fields teams in age groups ranging from Under 9 through to Under 17(colts). Home matches are played at Greythorn Park and Gordon Barnard Reserve in North Balwyn. Gordon Barnard boasts an excellent playing surface which is amongst the finest in the league. New junior players are always welcome. Our club has a policy of participation and encouragement where all players are given ample opportunity regardless of their ability. Family involvement is encouraged and parents are urged to make themselves available for match day duties such as goal umpiring and time keeping. Club officials and coaches are normally drawn from our parent group. The club is bound by a thoroughly workable Constitution and Set of Rules, Code of Conduct and a Religious and Racial Tolerance Policy for its smooth running and for the promotion of our game.   Win a Deluxe Night for Two at Crown Towers Win a deluxe night for two people at Crown Towers followed by breakfast the following morning at the Conservatory - valued at $500 Bill Thiel Named Coach of the Year  As if winning back-to-back premierships wasn't enough, Under 11s coach Bill Thiel has been named Oakleigh Chargers Region - Coach of the Year - Junior Section. Bill received his award at the Okleigh Chargers AFCA dinner held on the 10th September. This award means that Bill is now a contender for the Victorian 'Coach of the Year' the results of which will announced shortly. Under 11s win Premiership  Click Here for Video Highlights. They were magnificent. Right from the start you could see that they had come to play and were determined to win back to back premierships. Commencing the game kicking into a strong wind it was essential that they restrict their opponent from gaining too big an early advantage. Not only were they able to prevent Camberwell from gaining a handy lead with the wind at their backs, they actually completed the first term five points in front. From there, they never looked back and ran out the game comfortable winners and Premiers for the second year in a row. Last year, this group had the distinction of not losing a single game for the entire season but, in a way, their achievements this year are even better. Playing in a higher grade against more accomplished opposition they have triumphed again. Their second premiership in as many years is testament to the ability of this wonderful group of talented players and their magnificent coach Bill Thiel. Mention should be made of Jack Silvagni who won the YJFL medal for the best player on the ground. He was everywhere - taking high marks, diving into packs, laying ferrous tackles and of course, kicking goals. Up until midway through the final term when Dan Houstin put one through, Jack had virtually kicked his team's entire score and ended the game with seven goals to his credit. Whilst singing the praises of the Under 11s, let us not forget the achievements of the Under 14s and the KGU Colts who both made it through to their Grand Finals but in the end were not quite able to go all the way. Still, to actually make it to the Grand Final is no mean feat and both these teams are to be congratulated on their magnificent seasons. Steve Hooker Wins Gold Former player Steve Hooker has won a gold medal for Australia in the Men's Pole Vault at the Beijing Olympics. Steve is the son of former president and life member - Bill Hooker and brother of club best and fairest winner Tom. The Greythorn Football Club congratulates Steve on his outstanding success.  Greythorn has a close association with Old Camberwell Grammarians Football Club with whom we share a number of facilities. The OCG club provides an avenue for our players to continue their football at a senior level when their junior playing days have come to an end. Southern Cross Youth Initiative. |
