Media Guide
Cal Poly
Pomona’s women’s basketball program, which captured
back-to-back national championships in 2001 and 2002, re-established
itself as a top power in the NCAA Division II last year and
will be looking to add to its unprecidented postseason record
in 2004-05.
The Broncos reached the Sweet Sixteen last season for the
fourth time in the past five years, a total unmatched by any
other Division II program. In fact, only Division I programs
Connecticut, Tennessee and Duke, with five appearances, have
more from 2000-04.
The Broncos have won five NCAA Division II championships,
which is tied with North Dakota State for the most in the
division and appeared in eight national title games. Cal Poly
Pomona has the most NCAA Division II postseason victories
with 48 and is second to Bentley College for most NCAA postseason
appearances with 19. Cal Poly Pomona has also had five national
Players of the Year and Head Coach Paul Thomas was the national
Coach of the Year in 2002.
Thomas begins his 11th season as the Broncos’ head coach
after succeeding legendary coach Darlene May, who was the
program’s first head coach and guided the Broncos to
a 519-119 record and three national championships. In his
first 10 years with Cal Poly Pomona, Thomas has led the Broncos
to a 204-84 record and two national championships. Cal Poly
Pomona became the first NCAA Division II program to win back-to-back
national titles on two separate occasions when the Broncos
won titles in the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons.
The Broncos were 23-7 last season and advanced to the NCAA
Division II playoffs after a one-year absence. Cal Poly Pomona
defeated CCAA rivals Chico State and Cal State Bakersfield
to advance to the regional championship game for the fourth
time in five years. The Broncos were also second in the CCAA
with a 17-5 record. The Broncos are an amazing 140-37 over
the past six seasons, including a sizzling 102-26 mark in
the CCAA that has resulted in three conference titles over
the past five years.
Cal Poly Pomona returns three starters and seven players overall
from its 2003-04 squad, including the NCAA Division II scoring
champion, Candice Allen. Allen earned Kodak All-America honors
last season in addition to being named the CCAA Player of
the Year. She also earned first-team All-West Region honors.
Junior Brandi Fletcher, who was a second-team All-CCAA pick
in 2002-03, and junior Shanika Perkins, a top returning guard,
are also back for the Broncos.
Cal Poly Pomona will open its 2004-05 season with a road game
at Azusa Pacific on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. The Broncos' home opener
will be on Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. against St. Thomas University.
Cal Poly Pomona will begin CCAA play at home against Sonoma
State on Friday, Dec. 3, while the popular "Pack The
Gym Night" will be on Friday, Jan. 21, against Cal State
San Bernardino.
