MGCCC Lady Bulldogs get ready for 2008-09 Ja'net Schonberg is one of 7 sophomores from the 2007-08 team. You’d think Melanie Stone wouldn’t want to chat much about the end of the 2007-08 season, especially since he Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Lady Bulldogs finished the campaign on a six-game losing streak, including a 94-75 loss in the regular-season finale at Meridian. However, Stone’s already looking forward to next season, he second as head coach. “I’m excited about the players we’re bringing in next season,” Stone said. “We’ve got a solid foundation laid for 2008-09.” As for this season, a year that saw Gulf Coast go 7-18 overall and 3-11 in the MACJC South Division, Stone sees it as a missed opportunity for her squad. “We didn’t finish games this season,” she said. “ We played extremely hard, and we led most of our games at halftime, but there was always a three or four minute stretch in the second half of each game where we fell into a lull, and that hurt us badly. We’ll learn from that and move onto next season.”MGCCC Lady Bulldogs fall to Meridian 81-71 MGCCC’S Savannah Palomarez (44) scores two of her 22 points against Meridian Jan. 28. Make no mistake---the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Lady Bulldogs were not satisfied with losing 81-71 Jan. 28 to Meridian. However, Melanie Stone’s team turned a certain rout into a very entertaining and competitive game at the Weathers/Wentzell Center in Perkinston. The Lady Eagles Jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first half, but Gulf Coast stormed back to tie the game at 39-39 going into halftime. In the second half, Meridian slowly pulled away again, and took a 53-44 with 16:20 to go. Keaundra Augustus’s three-pointer cut the lead to 71-68 with 1:39 to go, but the Lady Eagles re-gained momentum and sealed the victory. Savannah Palomarez led Gulf Coast with 22 points, while Ja’Net Schonberg added 16. The Lady Bulldogs rebounded Jan. 31 with a 70-68 win at Southwest, which avenged an earlier loss to the Lady Bears Jan. 7. Gulf Coast then dropped a home game against Pearl River, and a road contest at Hinds. On Feb. 11, Gulf Coast used a 12-0 run in the second half to pull within 10 of Jones, but the Lady Bobcats pulled away down the stretch to win 91-70. Augustus led the way with 24 points, while Palomarez added 16. The Lady Bulldogs then dropped a road decision at Co-Lin Feb. 14. Gulf Coast (7-16, 3-9) will host East Central Feb. 18 at Perkinston.MGCCC Lady Bulldogs shut down Co-Lin 49-39 Daphia Ulmer (11) goes up for a shot against Co-Lin Jan. 22. Not pretty, but effective. That’s one way to describe the Mississippi Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs 49-39 home victory over Co-Lin Jan. 22. Keaundra Augustus scored 12 points, while Ja’Net Schonberg had 12, and Savannah Palomarez added 11 as the Lady Bulldogs improved to 6-10 overall and 2-3 in the MACJC South Division. After a sluggish first half by both teams, Gulf Coast took a 17-16 lead to the locker room at halftime. In the second half, Gulf Coast turned a slim five-point lead into a 39-27 12-point cushion with 5:30 to go. During that stretch, the Lady Bulldogs held Co-Lin scoreless for more than five minutes, while cashing in on several fast-breaks and opportunities from the foul line. Two days later, Augustus scored 25 points but the Lady Bulldogs (6-11, 2-4) lost at East Central 73-70. Daphia Almer added 16, and Savannah Palomarez finished with 11 in the loss. The Lady Bulldogs host Meridian Jan. 28 at Perkinston. Lady Bulldogs pound Hinds 68-50 For the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Lady Bulldogs, the 68-50 win over visiting Hinds Jan. 15 was just what the doctor ordered. Keaundra Augustus collected 26 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 7 steals as Gulf Coast (5-9, 1-2) won a South Division contest and snapped a five-game losing streak. “We played hard against Hinds,” said head coach Melanie Stone. “We haven’t been playing hard lately, and it showed. But this time we came out and played the way we’re supposed to every time.” Ja-net Schonberg added 13 points and Adrienne Mackay grabbed 6 rebounds in the win. The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 10-2 lead to start the game, but only led 27-22 at halftime. In the second half, Gulf Coast re-gained its intensity and poured it on Hinds, who went four minutes without scoring late in the game. On Jan. 17, Gulf Coast dropped a 95-79 decision at Jones. In that contest, Augustus has 23 points, with Schonberg adding 22. The Lady Bulldogs take on Co-Lin Jan. 22 in Perkinston. Lady Bulldogs fall at Pearl River 84-64 It was midway through the first half, and Melanie Stone had seen enough. The head coach of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Lady Bulldogs called time out, and with her team down nearly 30 points to arch-rival Pearl River, she got after her team. “We’re not doing anything we worked on in practice,” Stone sternly said to her squad. “Not one thing!” Although Gulf Coast played better after the tongue-lashing, the deficit was too much to overcome, as Pearl River cruised to an 84-64 win Jan.10 in Poplarville. The Lady Wildcats (10-3, 1-1) led 53-29 at halftime and never looked back. Gulf Coast (4-9, 0-2) was led by Savannah Palomarez with 16 points, while Ja’Net Schonberg added 15. The Lady Bulldogs host Hinds Jan. 14 at the Weathers/Wentzell Center on the college’s Perkinston Campus at 6 p.m. Southwest edges by MGCCC 67-65 Call it the one that got away – or perhaps call it a tale of two halves. Either way, the 67-65 loss to Southwest Jan. 7 loss was a bitter pill to swallow for the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Lady Bulldogs. The first half featured Gulf Coast taking several huge leads over the Lady Bears, including an 11-3 run to start the contest, and a 37-23 halftime advantage. But the Lady Bears (9-1, 1-0) chipped away at the lead, tied the game at 57 with 7:13 to go in the second half, and eventually took the lead. Gulf Coast (4-8, 0-1) had a chance to tie the game at 67 with 8-point-2 seconds to play, but a pair of missed foul shots, and a last second scoring opportunity fell short. Keaundra Augustus scored a game-high 26 points for the Lady Bulldogs, while Ja’Net Schonberg added 11 points. Gulf Coast travels to Poplarville Jan. 10 to face arch-rival Pearl River. MGCCC drops both games at East Miss. 2008 didn’t start off well for both Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College basketball teams. On Jan. 3, the Gulf Coast men dropped a 91-76 decision to the East Mississippi Lions in Scooba. The Bulldogs (7-4) begin MACJC South Division play Jan. 7 against Southwest at the Weathers/Wentzell Cetner. The Lady Bulldogs also lost to East Miss. 76-50. Keaundra Augustus led Gulf Coast with 16 points, while Ja'Net Schonberg and Savannah Palomarez added 10 apiece. Gulf Coast (4-7) also springs into MACJC South Division play Jan. 7 against Southwest. MGCCC hoops begins on hardwood Other than receiving a small bouquet of flowers on her desk, and hugs from family and friends, the first win for Melanie Stone as head coach of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Lady Bulldogs wasn’t a huge deal. In fact, the 78-37 destruction of Delgado by Gulf Coast Nov. 6 was more of a learning experience for Stone and her team. “We can play a lot better,” Stone said. “I feel like we played better during our first two games then we played against Delgado.” In those first two matchups, the Lady Bulldogs suffered close losses to San Jacinto (Tx.) (79-74) and LSU-Eunice (La.) (88-80). But despite her reservations, Stone said the 41-point blowout win had its perks. “It does feel good,” she said, “But I’m not satisfied. I expect a lot more effort from the team. We’ve got to play our game no matter who were playing.” Lady Bulldog sophomore Keaundra Augustus led the team in scoring with 16 points, while freshman Savannah Palomarez grabbed 11 rebounds. In the nightcap, the mens team opened its 2007-08 season with an 87-76 win over Delgado. Justin Ray led the way 25 points, with Luther Suggs and Ronnie Ealey scoring 13 apiece. On Nov. 8, the Bulldogs traveled to Bishop State and won 86-76 behind 25 points from Luther Suggs. The Lady Bulldogs fell to 1-3 thanks to a 71-57 loss at Bevill State (Ala.). As of Dec. 7, the Lady Bulldogs were 4-6 after wins against Delgado (79-54), Coahoma (65-45), and Northwest (76-65), and losses against Northwest (81-79), East Mississippi (53-46), and Faulkner St. (73-70). Meanwhile, the men's team is off to a 7-2 start, including two wins at the Gulf Coast Classic Nov. 19-20 over Northwest and East Mississippi, and a recent 71-58 victory over Bishop St. on Dec. 6. “We’ve done OK,” said men’s head coach Wendell Weathers. “I’m happy we’re at 7-2 now, but we’ve still got a lot of work to do.’ We’ve got to learn how to play an entire 40 minutes worth when we get on the court.” 1-866-735-1122| request information online© 2007 Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College
