2008-2009 Women's Basketball PreviewIf the Memorial Sea~Hawks women’s basketball team is to win its third straight AUS title it will have to do so with a revamped roster that sees only four players returning from last season.
The loss of three time AUS all-star and two time first team all-Canadian Katherine Quackenbush is big for the team, but one that the ‘Hawks can overcome with such a talented roster of players. Back this season are key members of the championship team Vicki Thistle, Meghan Dalton, and Kelly Himmelman. Sophomore Robyn O’Rielly returns for her second season with the team and the talented Brittany Dalton also returns for her second season after a year away from the team. Thistle will be looked upon to pick up her offensive production with the departure of Katherine Quackenbush. Meghan Dalton will bring versatility and intensity to the lineup. Himmelman will be the floor general for the Sea~Hawks this year. She is an excellent ball handler who can find her teammates in the right position to score.
The Memorial lineup will be lifted by an outstanding group of rookies that will enable Memorial to make a serious run at another championship. Joining the team this year are Ericka Gratton, Brittany McCarthy, Kim Devison, Grace Fishbein, Stephanie Stewart, Christina Smith, and Alexandria Forsey.
Head Coach Doug Partridge is returning as the bench boss for Memorial after being selected as the 2007-2008 AUS Coach of the Year. Joining Partridge as assistant coaches are Judy Byrne and Amy O’Rielly, both alumni of the women’s basketball team.
The Sea~Hawks will look to remain the class of the AUS in their 21 game schedule (10 home, 11 away). The ‘Hawks will tip-off the season at home in the Field House when they host the Dalhousie Tigers in a two game series on November 8-9. On November 15-16 the Sea~Hawks will be in Charlottetown to face the UPEI Panthers before welcoming the Acadia Axewomen to the Field House for a two game series on November 22-23 for the final game of the 2008 calendar year.
In the New Year, Memorial will be challenged in Sydney by some tough competition in the Cape Breton Capers on January 10-11. The Capers, ranked 8th nationally, handed Memorial one of their three loses last season. Memorial was able to redeem themselves in the AUS finals, ousting the Capers in a tightly contested matchup. Since the 1999-00 season Cape Breton is one of only three teams to win the AUS Championship. Memorial has won six in the span, Cape Breton two, and Dalhousie one.
The rest of January will see Memorial at home against the St. FX X-Women on January 17-18. Soaring into Fredericton on January 24-25, the Sea~Hawks will try to turn the Varsity Reds even redder with a couple of wins. The women will tease the big cats of the AUS on January 31-February 1 when they host the UPEI Panthers and on February 7-8 in Halifax when they play the Dalhousie Tigers. The following weekend the ‘Hawks will be playing the Saint Mary’s Huskies on the road before closing out the season against the Capers on February 20-21.
The AUS Championships will be from February 27-March 1 and is hosted by Dalhousie. If Memorial is able to repeat it will be on to the CIS Championships hosted by Regina March 6-8.
