When training camp begins in October, the Hornets will have a strength that was virtually non-existent last season despite the team winning a franchise-record 56 games and advancing to the second round of the playoffs.
They will have veteran depth at shooting guard and small forward after acquiring free agent James Posey, who agreed to a four-year, $25 million contract Wednesday.
Posey, 6 feet 8, who last season played with the Boston Celtics, can play both positions. He is an efficient perimeter shooter, a defensive stopper and quick enough to keep up with All-NBA point guard Chris Paul on fastbreaks.

The reigning NBA champions are about to lose their glue guy.
James Posey, arguably the most coveted unrestricted free agent left on the market, agreed to a four-year deal with the New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday worth an estimated $25 million, his agent, Mark Bartelstein, said.

When Coach Byron Scott dismissed the Hornets after their seven-game Western Conference semifinal loss to the San Antonio Spurs, the last thing on his mind was reminding them to stay in shape this offseason.
"That's the one thing I don't have to do with my guys anymore is stress conditioning," Scott said. "They know exactly how my training camps are. Each year it gets a little bit harder. And that's because expectations get a little bit higher. This year won't be any different."
And with expectations likely reaching championship level, more will be expected of a young player such as second-year forward Julian Wright, who saw his contributions to the effort increase greatly as last season wound down. Scott said he knows Wright has learned from the experience of his first NBA camp and will act on those lessons.

Tyson to train with U.S. team

Hornets center Tyson Chandler has accepted an invitation to train with the U.S. men's Olympic basketball team and will join it for training camp next week in Las Vegas, USA Basketball officials announced Tuesday.
It is unclear if Chandler will accompany the team to Beijing for the Olympic Games on Aug. 8-24.
Among six alternates selected for the team, Chandler is the only one invited to camp. His addition gives the team insurance in case starting center Dwight Howard does not recover fully from a chest injury that sidelined the Orlando Magic star for the team's one-day minicamp last month.

Although Boston Celtics free agent James Posey is uncertain where he will play next season, he remains interested in the Hornets.
"There is certainly interest on both sides," said Mark Bartelstein, who represents Posey. "We have had a lot of continued talks."
Besides the Hornets, Posey is considering offers from the Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers. Bartelstein said Posey could make his decision this week.

Fast rise has Paul on the world stage

NEW YORK - Chris Paul knows what the inside of a VIP room looks like.
When you're a rising NBA star with a magazine-ready smile, you get used to being ushered into private rooms at hot night spots.
The former Wake Forest standout finished second in the NBA MVP balloting in his third season with the New Orleans Hornets, but even Paul feels the zing of receiving an invitation to the USA Basketball party that will rage at the 2008 Beijing Olympics starting Aug. 10.
"One of my friends said it best when he told me this is the best team I will ever play on," Paul said about setting up Kobe Bryant and LeBron James for the U.S.
Paul, 23, first played internationally for the U.S. at the 2004 World Championship For Young Men qualifier where the U.S. won a gold. Paul made his first senior team for the 2006 World Championships in Japan after winning NBA Rookie of the Year honors.

During the playoffs last season, Hornets reserve Julian Wright had 10 steals and made an impact offensively despite playing limited minutes.
Coach Byron Scott is expecting Wright to perform even better this season, and those raised expectations will begin today when the Hornets play the Grizzlies in the Las Vegas Summer League. The league lasts through July 20, and New Orleans will play six games.
Wright, a rookie last season, and second-year center Hilton Armstrong are the only players on the Hornets' 13-man summer league team that were on the active roster for the entire season and participated in the playoffs.

As free-agency period opens, N.O. has slow first day

Hornets General Manager Jeff Bower said the team has been involved in serious discussions with several free agents, but no deals were finalized Wednesday, the first day free agents could sign contracts.
The Hornets continue to express interest in Boston free agent swingman James Posey and Detroit shooting guard Jarvis Hayes. They are also making a push to re-sign point guard Jannero Pargo, who is receiving interest from at least four different teams, according to his agent.
"I think we had some strong discussions with a large number of prospects," Bower said. "We're in the middle of different things that you are supposed to be at this time of the year. Investigating free agents, team strategies on how they may look to make changes."
Since July 1, the first day teams could contact free agents, Bower has been in discussions with Posey's agent, Mark Bartelstein. Posey, 6 feet 8, was the Celtics' top reserve and played a key role against the Lakers in the NBA Finals.
With the Warriors reaching a verbal agreement to sign Clippers free agent Corey Maggette, Posey now is considered by many the top remaining free agent.

A great day for Hornets still lacks a certain someone

John DeShazier-Times Picayune
On the day the NBA's best point guard signed a contract extension that almost guarantees New Orleans will remain capable of winning the Western Conference the next four seasons, a voice kept whispering that, still, something was missing.
On the day Chris Paul deservedly became the highest-paid Hornets player (a three-year extension worth $45 million, with a player option for a fourth year that could push the deal to $68 million), it was hard to dismiss the feeling that there should have been more, that CP shouldn't have been the only player answering questions about a new deal.
The franchise has never spent its money more wisely and appropriately.
But is anyone else getting the feeling that the plan New Orleans had entering free agency is being implemented a lot slower than expected? That, by now, the Hornets already should have agreed to terms with a free agent?
"It's kind of fallen along the lines of what you could see happening, in some ways," General Manager Jeff Bower said. "I think we've had some pretty strong discussions, (and are) encouraged with how they've gone."

'ALL ABOUT WINNING': Paul signed shorter contract to keep core group together

John Reid - Times Picayune
The possibility of earning $80 million for five seasons didn't catch Chris Paul's attention.
The Hornets' All-Star point guard was more interested in signing a shorter-term extension that provided assurances that the team's core group -- center Tyson Chandler and forwards David West and Peja Stojakovic -- would remain together for the next three seasons.
Paul signed a three-year extension Wednesday, which includes a player option for a fourth year, that pushes the estimated value of the contract to $68 million.
"I'm trying to make sure those guys are here with me," Paul said Wednesday at the New Orleans Arena. "When those guys' contracts are up, I want them to sign another one to stay with us. Everyone who knows me knows that I'm not big on change. So when I find out that someone in the office has left, I want to know what's going on."

Hornets focusing attention on Posey

John Reid - Times-Picayune
The Hornets are targeting Boston Celtics free agent James Posey to solve their needs at shooting guard, but whether Hornets General Manager Jeff Bower can pull off a deal is uncertain.
Free agents can begin signing contracts Wednesday, and Posey is one of the most sought after on the market. Posey, who can play shooting guard and small forward, appears to be one of the Hornets' No. 1 targets. However, it likely would take a full mid-level exception offer of $5.8 million for him to consider coming to New Orleans.

With shrewd moves, GM Bower builds Hornets into NBA power
Posted By: HunnyB

Chris Colston-USA Today
In three years, Jeff Bower directed an 18-win team to NBA elite status. He helped turn New Orleans into a city that appreciates basketball as much as its beloved football. He has done this through a series of savvy, under-the-radar, fiscally responsible moves, keeping owner George Shinn happy.
And hardly anyone knows his name.
"Who is the Hornets' general manager?" repeats Curtis Guichard, an oyster shucker at New Orleans' Acme Oyster House. "Man, I could not tell you."
He turns to co-worker Steve LeBlanc. "Steve, any clue?"
"No idea," he says.
That's how Bower prefers it.
"This guy, he's been in the background too long," ESPN analyst Hubie Brown says. "He's been extremely productive under extreme conditions. You cheer for somebody like this."

Season-ticket rise evident in Hornets' packages
Posted By: HunnyB

John Reid-Times Picayune
Unlike previous seasons, the Hornets will not offer 10- or 15-game mini-season-ticket plans in the lower bowl at the New Orleans Arena for next season.
Those packages will be available only in the upper-level sections because the Hornets have experienced a surge in season-ticket sales. They have nearly 10,000 season-ticket holders, and only 400 seats remain in the lower bowl.
Hornets President Hugh Weber said there are 5,000 new season-ticket holders, and 90 percent of the ticket holders from last season have renewed. The Hornets hadn't had 10,000 season-ticket holders since arriving from Charlotte, N.C., in 2002.
