NL Cy Young Race Breakdown

Ray Flowers takes a look at the Cy Young candidates in the National League. More » TopStory.Init(); NFL MLB NBA NHL NASCAR PGA More Player News L.J. Smith, TE - Philadelphia Eagles September 7 @ 4:51pm CT Smith crosses the imaginary plane - Tight end L.J. Smith got his 2008 campaign off on the right foot by catching five passes for 39 yards and a touchdown. Our View Smith had his 2007 campaign derailed by injuries, so it's nice to see him get off to a good start. Hank Baskett, WR - Philadelphia Eagles September 7 @ 4:47pm CT Baskett makes most of opportunities - With starters Reggie Brown and Kevin Curtis unable to play due to injuries, wide receiver Hank Baskett stepped up to the plate and posted two receptions for 102 yards and a score in the season opener. Our View Baskett only had two receptions but he scored from 90 yards out on one of them, and will continue to provide value in the Eagles pass happy attack, as long as the frontline starters are sidelined. Greg Lewis, WR - Philadelphia Eagles September 7 @ 4:43pm CT Lewis passes the century mark - Wide receiver Greg Lewis posted five catches for 102 yards in the season opening win over St. Louis. Our View You know the Eagles passing offense was hitting on all cylinders when Lewis passes the century mark. Antonio Gates, TE - San Diego Chargers September 7 @ 4:40pm CT Gates injures hip - Antonio Gates left the season opener in the first half due to a bruised hip. He headed to the locker room but is expected to return. Our View Initial reports make this ailment sound minor, and we'll follow up when more information becomes available. He currently has two catches for 30 yards. DeSean Jackson, WR - Philadelphia Eagles September 7 @ 4:37pm CT Jackson builds on preseason performance - Rookie wide receiver DeSean Jackson notched six catches for 106 yards in his professional debut against the Rams. Our View Jackson was the Eagles most explosive player during the preseason, and displayed more highlight reel plays today, including a 47-yard reception and a 60-yard punt return. Brian Westbrook, RB - Philadelphia Eagles September 7 @ 4:30pm CT Westy scores twice - Running back Brian Westbrook carried the ball 19 times for 91 yards and posted two receptions for one yard and two touchdowns in the season opener. Our View Westbrook, who appears to be in mid-seaason form, has picked up where he left off in the prior two seasons. In other words he's still a stud. Donovan McNabb, QB - Philadelphia Eagles September 7 @ 4:28pm CT McNabb dominates in win over Rams - Quarterback Donovan McNabb completed 21-of-33 passes for 361 yards with three touchdowns against no inteceptions in the Eagles 38-3 drubbing of the Rams. Our View McNabb was just sick, hooking up on scoring tosses to running back Brian Westbrook, tight end L.J. Smith and wide receiver Hank Baskett. Earnest Graham, RB - Tampa Bay Buccaneers September 7 @ 4:24pm CT Graham posts solid yardage digits - Running back Earnest Graham compiled 10 carries for 91 yards and chipped in three receptions for 27 yards in the Buccaneers season opening loss to New Orleans. Our View Graham totaled 118 yards from scrimmage, but split the carries almost evenly with Warrick Dunn. Graham should handle the work at the stripe going forward, but it's definitely concerning to see Dunn pilfer so many carries. More Player News AL NL Joe Mauer, C - Minnesota Twins September 7 @ 4:51pm CT Mauer collects three hits - Despite going 3-for-5 and scoring a run, Twins catcher Joe Mauer could not lead his team to a win over the Tigers, falling by the score of 7-5. Our View Mauer now has multiple-hit games in four of the six he has played in September. His average is at .326, the highest it has been since July 10, when it was at .328. Miguel Cabrera, 1B - Detroit Tigers September 7 @ 4:49pm CT Cabrera continues to roll - Miguel Cabrera had two hits in five at-bats, including his 32nd home run of the season, to help the Tigers to a 7-5 win over the Twins. Our View Cabrera is now hitting .348 on the month, along with nine RBI. He will not quite live up to the expectations of fantasy owners unless he can push that batting average over .300, but he has been worth the first-round pick anyway. Glen Perkins, P - Minnesota Twins September 7 @ 4:45pm CT Perkins loses fourth game - Minnesota's Glen Perkins lost just his fourth game of the year by allowing five runs (three earned) in 5.2 innings in the Twins 7-5 loss to the Tigers. Our View Despite his stellar record, Perkins has an ERA of 4.11, and has given up at least four runs in four of his last five starts. Victor Martinez, C - Cleveland Indians September 7 @ 4:40pm CT Martinez drives in three - Victor Martinez was the DH for the Indians, and he got two hits in three at-bats while driving in all three Cleveland runs in their 3-1 win over the Royals. Our View Martinez is hitting .333 with six RBI since coming off the DL, rewarding any fantasy owner who stuck with him in his long stint away. Jose Guillen, RF - Kansas City Royals September 7 @ 4:37pm CT Guillen goes 2-for-3 - Jose Guillen went 2-for-3 and scored the Royals lone run in their 3-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians. Our View Guillen has managed to alienate himself from fans in Kansas City, but fantasy owners are pretty happy with his 18 home runs and 86 RBI. Cliff Lee, P - Cleveland Indians September 7 @ 4:34pm CT Lee wins 21st game - Indians pitcher Cliff Lee won his 21st game of the season by throwing 7.1 innings and giving up just one run on seven hits in the Tribe's 3-1 win over the Royals. Our View No fantasy owner could have possibly seen this coming, and who knows if he will follow it up in 2009 with a similar performance, but right now, he is arguably the best pitcher in the American League. Francisco Rodriguez, P - Los Angeles Angels September 7 @ 4:30pm CT Rodriguez picks up 55th save - Francisco Rodriguez is now two short of tying the all-time single season saves record, as he accumulated his 55th of the season by striking out two White Sox in the ninth inning of the Angels 3-2 win. Our View Barring some sort of catastrophe, Rodriguez will break the single season record of 57, and has a chance to get more than 60. Fantasy owners are enjoying one of the most prolific seasons by a reliever ever. Jermaine Dye, RF - Chicago White Sox September 7 @ 4:27pm CT Dye struggles - Jermaine Dye has had better games than the one he played in the White Sox 3-2 loss to the Angels. Dye went 0-for-3 and struck out twice. Our View This is the third time in six games Dye has struck out multiple times. He has struggled to a .217 average in September. More Player News Zach Randolph, F - New York Knicks September 7 @ 11:14am CT Randolph trade talks continue - The previously reported Randolph to Memphis trade talks are heating up, according to the New York Post. Under the terms of the deal, Randolph would go to Memphis for Darko Milicic and Marko Jaric. Our View Still, nothing has happened yet. We will keep you posted. Bill Walker, G - Boston Celtics September 7 @ 8:50am CT Walker recovered from knee surgery - Walker is recovered from arthroscopic knee surgery, according to the Boston Globe. Our View The big Kansas State alum could be a steal for the Celtics long-term if he stays healthy. Kobe Bryant, G - Los Angeles Lakers September 6 @ 4:26pm CT Kobe to announce surgery date - Kobe Bryant will announce the date he plans on having his hand surgery on Monday via kb24.com according to the Orange County Register. Our View It is expected to take at least six weeks to fully recover but don't be surprised if Kobe pushes this. He should be ready to go for the Lakers season opener and it's doubtful he will show much rust. Kobe is a virtual lock as a top-3 selection in NBA fantasy circles. Darnell Jackson, F - Cleveland Cavaliers September 6 @ 3:55pm CT Cavs ink Jackson - As expected, the Cavaliers have signed rookie Darnell Jackson, according to NBA.com. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Our View Jackson did not impress during the summer league, and won't likely hold any fantasy value in 2008. Darko Milicic, F - Memphis Grizzlies September 6 @ 9:52am CT Milicic pleased with idea of joining NY - Darko Milicic is pleased with the idea of being dealt to the Knicks in exchange for Zach Randolph, according to ESPN. Our View The main attraction to New York would be to play for coach Mike D'Antoni. Milicic's fantasy stock wouldn't increase much with the Knicks, and he would still only hold value in the blocks department. Mario Chalmers, G - Miami Heat September 6 @ 9:45am CT Chalmers apologizes - Mario Chalmers apologized to the Heat and the NBA regarding his banishment from the NBA’s rookie symposium, according to the AP. He said, "Everyone who knows me knows I am a good person and I pride myself on doing the right thing. I am embarrassed this happened. I broke the rules, but I did not smoke marijuana. I made a poor decision in putting myself in the situation that I did. It is a dream of a lifetime to play in the NBA and be part of the Miami Heat. I look forward to starting my NBA career, this was a one-time occurrence and it won’t happen again." Our View A suspension is likely for Chalmers, and commissioner David Stern is very displeased with Chalmers' error in judgment. Ben Gordon, G - Chicago Bulls September 6 @ 9:39am CT GM denies talking with Gordon - The GM of CSKA Moscow denies that he had been talking with Ben Gordon regarding a contract to play overseas, according to ESPN. Our View Gordon was believed to be using the rumor as leverage to get a better deal from the Bulls. If he remains in Chicago, his playing time could decrease with a surplus of guards on the team. Brandon Roy, G - Portland Trailblazers September 5 @ 8:30pm CT Roy continues rehab - Brandon Roy is riding the stationary bike and doing some light shooting in his recovery from left knee surgery. He is still not cleared to jump but head coach Nate McMillan feels that he will be ready by the season opener according to the Oregonian. Our View We'll monitor this closrly but don't be surprised if Roy gets off to a slow start once he does return. Furthermore, Portland's depth at guard means the Blazers won't be in any hurry to rush Roy back into action. More Player News Brendan Shanahan, RW - New York Rangers September 7 @ 2:29pm CT Shanahan to the Canadiens? - HockeyBuzz.com reports that Shanahan would love to end his career in Montreal. Our View Reports have said that Shanahan's priority is to stay in New York, but Montreal would be an interesting destination for him. Bobby Allen, D - Boston Bruins September 7 @ 9:07am CT Allen remains sidelined with back injury - The Boston Globe reports that Allen remains sidelined with two herniated disks in his back. Our View "Really a shame," said his agent, Jay Fee. "He had seven clubs inquiring all summer long, but right now, there's not much he can do. He's in a lot of pain." Don't look for Allen back on the ice anytime soon. Alexander Radulov, RW - Nashville Predators September 6 @ 10:43pm CT Radulov saga heading to court - The Detroit News reports that the Alexander Radulov transfer dispute is now heading to court. The Continental Hockey League (KHL) withdrew its appeal on five other player transfers at a meeting on Saturday between the International Ice Hockey Federation and nine member countries, but couldn't resolve the Radulov case, the IIHF said in a statement. The NHL and KHL will now go to court or arbitration to decide who owns his rights. Radulov had one year remaining on his contract with the Nashville Predators when he signed a deal with a foreign team. Our View No one can know how this will work out but we are pulling for the NHL to keep this guy so that he can bring his respectable production back to fantasy leagues. Kyle McLaren, D - San Jose Sharks September 6 @ 6:53pm CT McLaren back in action - The Mercury News reports that defenseman Kyle McLaren is back practicing with the San Jose Sharks and appears to be fully recovered from the groin injury that caused him to miss the playoffs. Our View It's still unclear how much action McLaren will see this season. Since that the arrival of Dan Boyle, Rob Blake and Brad Lukowich, McLaren looks like the odd man out on San Jose’s blue line. The Sharks are just over the salary cap and losing McLaren’s $2.5 million contract would remedy that with room to spare. Besides that, his playing time last season had fallen below that of younger players such as Christian Ehrhoff and Marc-Edouard Vlasic. On the depth chart, it’s hard to imagine McLaren penciled in higher than a fifth or sixth defenseman at this point. Steve Bernier, RW - Vancouver Canucks September 6 @ 5:02pm CT Bernier will lineup with twins - Steve Bernier will play on the same line as twins Daniel and Henrik Sedin this coming season according to the Vancouver Sun. "One of the key focuses for us was to get a player we felt would complement them," Vancouver GM Mike Gillis said. "We actively went out and got Steve (Bernier) because we feel he could be a complementary player for them. So that's an indication what I think of them." Our View The rugged winger tallied 16 goals and 16 assists last season between Buffalo and San Jose. If he can establish a good chemistry with his new linemates, he should see a sharp increase in production and become a solid fantasy contributor. Eric Lindros, RW - September 6 @ 1:56pm CT Lindros explains declining invite - Eric Lindros explained his reason for declining the Flyers' invitation to attend the Spectrum farewell game, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. Lindros said, "I'm unfortunately unable to attend the ceremony at the Spectrum because I will be attending a memorial service for my close friend's mother who recently passed away. The Spectrum holds many special memories for me, and I always enjoyed playing there in front of the great Flyers' fans." Our View Lindros was one of the best players to ever skate for the Flyers at the Spectrum, and clarified that he needs to attend a funeral and not because he had a falling out with the organization. Tomas Holmstrom, RW - Detroit Red Wings September 6 @ 1:09pm CT Holmstrom fully recovered - Tomas Holmstrom believes he is fully recovered from his sports hernia surgery, according to the Detroit News. He said, "I think I'm going to be good for camp. The hernia feels good. I've skated a couple times before." Our View He has been demoted from the top line following the addition of Marian Hossa, but should still provide fantasy owners with solid depth as a late-round pick. Zdeno Chara, D - Boston Bruins September 6 @ 10:14am CT Chara progressing well - Zdeno Chara has been progressing favorably in his recovery from left shoulder surgery, according to the Boston Globe. Our View Chara has been skating and moving without limitations during this week's informal on-ice sessions, which were limited in physical play. He isn't sure if he will be able to play in any of the eight preseason games, but wants to insure he is back to 100 percent. He looks to return as a No. 1 defenseman for fantasy leagues. More Player News Bowyer finishes 12th in points September 7 @ 3:38pm CT Clint Bowyer finished 12th in the Chevy Rock & Roll 400, which was enough to give him the 12th and final spot in the Chase. Our View For portions of the race, he was outside the top 12 but he made his own luck by running into Regan Smith and shoving the unsuspecting rookie into his rival David Ragan. The damage to the No. 6 was too much to overcome. Johnson wins Richmond September 7 @ 3:27pm CT Jimmie Johnson held off a determined Tony Stewart to win the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 by less than 4/10ths of a second. Our View Stewart caught Johnson in the final 10 laps and led several circuits, but Johnson found his momentum in the upper groove and retook the top spot. Competition caution coming September 7 @ 11:35am CT NASCAR has announced a competition caution at lap 35, to allow teams to check tire wear. Kyle Busch leads the field to green. Our View All of the rubber laid down in practice will be washed off the surface, but that shouldn't affect the drivers much. Rain cancels quals September 5 @ 5:14pm CT Tropical Storm Hanna has canceled qualification for both the Nationwide and Cup series and the lineup will be set by the rule book. Kyle Busch will lead the field to green On Saturday night (or whenever the race gets underway). Our View The much anticipated debut of Joey Logano will have to wait another week, but he at least has the pole for the Nationwide Series race. NASCAR acquires Grand Am September 5 @ 2:31pm CT Grand Am will be acquired by NASCAR holdings, making this part of the premiere racing family. Look for more crossovers from road race aces like Scott Pruett to Cup and Jimmie Johnson to Grand Am. Our View Ultimately this will have little effect in the future, with the exception of some additional, strong road ringers at Watkins Glen and Infineon. Chase scenarios: 12th September 5 @ 1:15pm CT The 12th spot in the standings is much harder to predict. Clint Bowyer leads David Ragan by only 17 points and Kasey Kahne by 48. He could finish second in the race and still lose his spot. Our View If Ragan wins the race after leading the most laps, nothing any other driver does will matter. Conversely, he could finish three or four positions ahead of Bowyer and clinch, so this battle could come down to the last lap. Logano wins Richmond practice September 5 @ 12:06pm CT Joey Logano posted the fastest average speed in the one and only practice session for the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at 118.451 during 39 circuits. Our View Logano is required to qualify on time this week, but that shouldn't be much of a problem. His fastest single lap was 10th best and it was set early in the session. Gordon posts fastest lap at Richmond September 5 @ 12:03pm CT Jeff Gordon posted the single fastest lap of practice at Richmond, with a speed of 118.279 mph set late in the session. Our View Gordon complained about his car during long runs, but he was in the top five on the average speed chart as well. However, this team has a knack for losing the handle during the race. More Player News Singh falls out of the fray at BMW Championship September 6 @ 9:45pm CT After tremendous wins in each of the first two stages of this year's FedEx Cup playoffs, Vijay Singh has fallen out of contention at this week's BMW Championship, according to the PGA. After an opening round of 70 on Friday (Thursday's rounds were cancelled due to rain), Vijay failed to improve today in two rounds, carding scores of 70 and 71 to hit the fourth round at 1-stroke over par for the tourney. Our View In making the cut, Singh has all but wrapped the FedEx Cup Championship regardless of the slight fall from grace. Only three players were in contention to make a potential move (Sergio Garcia, Mike Weir, Camilo Villegas) and all were in need of two missed cuts from Singh to have a realistic shot. Villegas has stayed hot and could make it interesting, but there is little reason to believe Singh won't that the FedEx Cup home this season. Choi makes big move at the BMW Championship September 6 @ 9:39pm CT K.J. Choi made the biggest move to the first page of the leaderboard on Saturday afternoon at this week's BMW Championship, according to the PGA. Choi carded a score of 6-under 64 in the third round of play, leaving him at 8-under for the tournament going into Sunday's final round. Our View Choi has hit 46 of 54 greens in regulation this week, which ranks him No. 1 in the field. This is a nice surge from one of the most active international talents in the game. He has filled one of the largest schedules on the Tour, making stops on the main circuit as well as on the European and Asian Tours, and is in contention at most. His scores in recent weeks have been a little higher than desired, indicating the fatigue of a long season and more than a fair share of airline miles logged may be giving him a hard time, but today shows he still has the game to compete with the best. Gay enjoying strong performance at BMW Championship September 6 @ 9:29pm CT After shooting a par of 67s to put him solidly in the hunt going into the third round, Brian Gay continued top play on Saturday afternoon at this week's BMW Championship, according to the PGA. He carded a third-round score of 4-under par and currently stands at 10-under for the tournament - one of just three players (Jim Furyk, Camilo Villegas) sitting at double-digit strokes under par. Our View The PGA reports Gay, in his first nine holes of the third round, had six one-putt greens, an amazing performance with the putter. We'll see if he can keep the short blade hot on Sunday and continue the battle with Villegas and Furyk. Furyk surges at the BMW Championship September 6 @ 9:26pm CT With a rare miscue off the tee, Jim Furyk bogeyed the final hole of his third round at this week's BMW Championship today. However, his round of 4-under 66, bookended with the 8-under 62 he shot Saturday morning, wraps up a terrific performance on a long day at the third stage of this season's FedEx Cup playoff, according to the PGA. Our View That bogey dropped Furyk into a tie with Camilo Villegas at 12 under, two shots ahead of Brian Gay. But while Furyk is done, Villegas - who just started his second nine - will have to finish his third round Sunday morning. Furyk has yet to earn a victory this season but has been in contention at the vast majority of tourneys he has hit. You know he will be as consistent as ever on Sunday, but the battle with Villegas and any others who make a charge could be rather intriguing. Streak ends for Watson September 6 @ 12:02am CT With a 2-over 72 on Friday at the BMW Championship, Bubba Watson saw his PGA Tour-leading streak of consecutive rounds at par or better snapped at 10, according to the PGA. Our View The current best streak belongs to John Riegger, Justin Leonard and Vijay Singh, with nine straight rounds. Riegger isn't participating this week, while Leonard and Singh opened with rounds of 69 and 70, respectively. Romero leads the way for BMW rookies September 6 @ 12:00am CT Of the four PGA TOUR rookies competing in the BMW Championship, 2008 Zurich Classic of New Orleans winner Andres Romero got off to the best start with a 4-under 66, according to the PGA. Our View The others are Chez Reavie (67), Martin Laird (69) and Kevin Streelman (70). Garcia starts strong at the BMW Championship September 5 @ 11:06pm CT Sergio Garcia, working as one of few that could potentially challenge Vijay Singh for this year's FedEx Cup, carded a round of 68 today, two strokes under par, three strokes off the leading pace set by Camilo Villegas at the BMW Championship, according to the PGA. Our View Four players have finished inside the top 10 in each of the first two Playoff events. The list includes Singh (two-time winner), Garcia (tie for second/Barclays, tie for fifth/Deutsche Bank), Mike Weir (tie for seventh/Barclays, second/Deutsche Bank) and Justin Leonard (tie for seventh in both). Of that group, Garcia had the best start this week. Singh opens with par at BMW Championship September 5 @ 11:02pm CT Vijay Singh, who is coming off victories in the first two events of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup, opened with an even-par 70, according to the PGA. Singh was one of 47 players out of the 69-man field to post a par-or-better round on Friday. Our View Making the cut will all but assure Singh takes this year's FedEx Cup, but he would like to improve and get in the mix for a win and dominate the event. He tends to start a bit slow on Day 1, so look for lower scores in the next three rounds.
