Any useful discussion of the physics of ergometerswill inevitably have a bias towards the model most commonly used (i.e.Concept), which also happens to be the one that I am most familiar with. 1. Introduction The basic components of a rowing simulator area flywheel, to store the energy between strokes (simulating the boat momentum)a handle, attached to the flywheel via a chain and sprocket, orcable and pulley(simulating the oar)a damping mechanism on the flywheel (to simulate water friction on the hull)a return mechanism (to simulate motion of boat to front-stops)Stick some kind of power/speed monitor on it and it's called an ergometer.Some of the different models are:Concept(also, Concept UK) An American model, and by far the most commonly used ergometer. Resistance provided by air-damping. Models C, D and E are all pretty similar from a physics point-of-view. These can also be mounted on 'slides' - turing them from a 'static' erg to a 'dynamic' erg (Section 12).Rowperfect (alsoAustralian Web-site) A Dutch model similar to the Concept with one important difference:not only does the seat move back and forwards but so does the flywheel(a 'dynamic' erg).
