Jen's Ryan Klesko Page Jen's Ryan Klesko Page May 26, 2000-Ryan signs a contract extension that keeps him in San Diego through the 2004 season.  Read the Padres press release here.  What does Ryan say about the deal? "Coming back to Southern California and playing here was a dream of mine, and I feel that this club is really on the right track to get back to winning," Klesko said. "That's obviously part of the reason I signed." Ryan quickly became a fan favorite in San Diego during the 2000 season.  He posted his best year offensively, and showed everyone he was no slouch in the field either.  He's finally getting the respect he deserves and it flourishing because of it! He even became an all star in 2001! SD Logo I first became a Ryan Klesko fan when I saw his first at bat.  I remember seeing his powerful swing, and thinking "Man, this guy has power!"  I have been a fan ever since.  I had loved the Braves first because of Dave Justice (and the fact that my mom loved the "loveable loser Braves"), but Ryan soon captured my attention.  I have been a loyal fan ever since.  I always wanted to see Ryan play in Atlanta, but now, I will only have to travel to San Diego to see Ryan play in his home stadium.  I got the chance to get my pic taken with Klesko when I saw him play in Phoenix during spring training 2000. Make sure to check out spring training 2000 photos later on this page.   During my trip to SF during the 99 season, I was lucky enough to meet a friend of Ryan's, who was nice enough to get Ryan's autograph for me.  The next day, I got another autograph from Ryan himself! 2001 Highlights SUMMARY: Earned his first trip to the All-Star Game in his 2nd San Diego season, teaming with Phil Nevin to form one of the most powerful 3-4 tandems in all of baseball, the most prolific in Padres history...batted .286 with 30 home runs...his 113 RBI were a career high and most ever by a Padres first baseman...his team-leading 105 runs scored, also a personal high, were 8th-most in club history...led the club with a career-high 34 doubles and 88 walks, 3 shy of his career high set in 2000...his .539 slugging percentage was 10th-highest in club annals...Klesko's 154 hits were his most in a single season...blended power with speed, matching his 2000 personal best with 23 stolen bases, a total surpassed only by Rickey Henderson (25) among Padres...equaled his 1997 career high with 6 triples, tied with Damian Jackson for tops on the team...received the Chairman's Award, presented annually by the Padres' Community Relations Department, to the player who best exemplifies the community spirit of John Moores and his family.
