Pioneers Hold Instructional Clinic

Aug. 23, 2008The Point Park softball team held an introduction to fast pitch clinic Saturday at Aiken Elementary School in Greentree. Pioneer players and coaches provided instruction for kids of the Greentree area, which has never had a fast pitch league.Members of the Greentree community reached out to Point Park coach Michelle Coultas because they were interested in starting a fast pitch league in the near future. Coultas and her players were glad to lend a helping hand and help grow the game of softball on the youth level."I love softball, and I will do anything to help kids," said Coultas, who will begin her third season at Point Park in the spring. "We were happy to help out the community and teach the kids fast pitch softball. That community has never had the opportunity to have a fast pitch league, and hopefully we helped them and helped to grow the game of softball."Coultas was joined by players Jamie Stumme, Lindsey Pesanka, Ashley Braeudigam, Sara Plocki and Abby Heigel. The Pioneers gave instruction on hitting, pitching, baserunning and bunting. The clinic included 25 kids ages 10-14.  

Tripp, Pesanka Pick up AMC Awards

May 2008Point Park University pitcher Katie Tripp (Summerhill, PA/Forest Hills HS) was tabbed to the First Team All-American Mideast Conference North Division team, while Pioneer shortstop Lindsey Pesanka (Baldwin, PA/Baldwin HS) was named Freshman of the Year.Tripp, a senior from Summerhill, Pa., ranked in the top three in the conference in ERA, opponent batting average and strikeouts.  She fanned a career-high 153 batters this season, en route to her first ten-win season. Pesanka, a rookie from Baldwin, Pa., started in all but one game for the Pioneers this season.  She led the squad in runs (27), doubles (9), home runs (2), and RBI (21) and boasted a solid .348 batting average.Landing on the second team was senior Lauren Miller (McKees Rocks, PA/Sto-Rox HS) and sophomore Christie Schroeder (Baldwin, PA/Baldwin HS).Miller, a three-time honorable mention All-AMC recipient, saved the best for last in 2008.  Miller, a centerfielder, batted .339 and led the Green and Gold in stolen bases (12), hits (43) and triples (4).Schroeder, a catcher, led the Pioneers in batting average, hitting at a .440 clip this season.  While sharing time behind the plate with fellow sophomore Courtney Cain, Schroeder committed only four errors.Landing on the honorable mention team was Pesanka and fellow freshman Kristi Marsili (Vandergrift, PA/Kiski Area HS), and senior Kaitlyn Merks (McKees Rocks, PA/Sto-Rox).
