Queens McGill Boat Race 27-04-08  The 15th Annual Queens McGill boat race stage is set for April 27th, 2008 at the LaChine Canal in Montreal. This prestigious race is a head to head battle between the two universities where the top 8 athletes from each university are seated in two varsity(men/womens) and two novice (mens/womens) eights. For the Queens Men this race is an opportunity to bring the series to a 6-6 draw ( Queens men currently trail 5-6) for the first time in boat race history. The women have the opportunity to stretch their lead and help bring home the D.Lornes Cup. For Queens-McGill Video's check out the media section below, for more info visit the Queens-McGill section. Ergathon Raises Over $700 on 24-erg-a-thon  Queens Rowers participated in their annual 24 hour ergathon to raise money for Right to Play. Right to Play is a charitable organization which gives youth in developing nations the opportunity to participate in simple pick up sports such as soccer and baseball. The 24 hour row was divided up into one hour shifts where up to five rowers at a time would row for an hour straight before trading off to the next group. Jon Brunetti(Eng'10) completed a 55km 4 hour straight shift that started at 6 in the morning. This was a tradition initially established by Ryan Gallagher, a former Queens Grad, who pulled the 4 hour straight row 3 years in a row at the ergathon. Past Articles: 03-02-08 Queens Rowers Medal At Canadian Indoors!  Last weekend Queen's sent 6 rowers to the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships in Toronto, and they returned with three medals. Nick Pratt won the senior A lightweight men's category over Queen's Alumni Josh Metcalf. Katya Herman took the senior A lightweight women's gold medal with a 24 second victory over second place. Rares Crisan and Rob Ballard competed in the U23 lightweight men's category. Crisan took second place, with Ballard storming in during the last 1000m to take 5th place. The women's team captured the OUA Banner, with the men's team coming in 2nd place in the OUA. Other highlights include the women's team winning the Canadian University Rowing Championship (CURC) Banner for the first time ever!! The men also had a great showing at CURC's, finishing 2nd place overall. Combining the overall men's and women's team points at OUA's and CURC's ranks Queen's University as not only the best rowing team in Ontario, the best rowing team in Canada. (click me) The Men's team finished its intense season of racing with a second place finish after Western University at both the provincial and national regattas. The men's lightweight coxed, however seemed untouchable as it ended its undefeated season with a flawless victory at the Canadian University Regatta and the heavy mens pair were also able to take gold. Past Articles: 05-10-07  On a beautiful autumn day in Peterborough Ontario, Queen’s University rowers took on their OUA rivals and top club athletes of Ontario and Quebec. Overall the day’s racing was a success, with gold medals being won by heavyweight and lightweight men and women. This early season show of speed should set the scales for upcoming Brock Invitational in two weeks time. Nick Pratt started the day off in strong fashion winning the lightweight men’s single in brilliant fashion. The lightwieght women's four, Charly Thivierge-Lortie, Rebecca (Tron) McWatters, Kristine Matusiak, Nicole Bobbette and coxswain Carly Bureau, passed 5 crews on route to a one second victory over Western. Full Release 29-09-07  In what was the opening weekend of racing for Queens Crews all rowers began the season with a roaring start. Fourteen Golds, Six Silvers and one Bronze was the end result of a full day of racing on the Rideau River in Ottawa. Notable results came from Morgan Jarvis who narrowly won the open mens single (OM1X) by just one second in a time of 19:50, Nicole Campbell who took the Lightweight varsity womens single (LVM1X) by 8 seconds over teammate Connie Dayboll who placed second, and the Junior Varsity womens eight (coxed by Hilary Winderm) winning the open womens category (OW8+). The heavy and lightwieght mens varsity eights as well as the lightweight womens eight each won their respective categories with the heavy womens eight placing second in strong field of competition.   a |
