Eels NYC eyeing third

Parramatta's NYC team has the chance to jump over the top of the Warriors into third position if they can secure a victory in their final game of the season which will be played against that very side. The Eels have had a nice settled lineup in recent weeks with the only disruption for this match being Tim Robinson's possible promotion to first grade. Parramatta blew a 16 point lead against the Dragons before drawing the match 26 all. Fullback Nathan Gardner who has been super impressive in the back half of this season was a standout scoring a fabulous length of the field individual try. Tim may join Chad in his last match

Eels youngster Tim Robinson may join brother Chad in his last game in Blue and Gold colours after his was named as the extra man on an extended becnh. There are no changes to the team that was dominated by St George last week with the exception of Tim's inclusion on the bench. That means Daniel Wagon and Mark Riddell won't get a Blue and Gold send-offs. However the club has promised a tribute to all three players to be played on the big screen prior to the match. The psychology of the turnaround

I've made the case on this site on ample occasions that the most important hire Parramatta could make is a sports psychologist. I believe player's psychology to be the single most important factor in deciding whether a side is performing a maximum efficiency or bumbling along like a broken ass. It's pretty clear that in terms of the psychology of the Parramatta football team, Michael Hagan failed this year. After months and months of declaring she'll be right, it took the likelihood that Parramatta's season was about to collapse before he finally admitted that the players weren't playing with the necessary attitude to defend their line and play consistent football. Earlier in the year, we heard in glowing terms how Hagan's cool-headed approach was reaping dividends. When the Eels were down and out against the Bulldogs, Hages kept calm and the team responded with a miraculous comeback. In Hages we trust, roared the fans. Hages stayed cool as Parramatta lurched along. We're not far off coming good, he would say repeatedly. He kept faith in his senior players. Until it was too late. There was a reported blow-up that didn't apparently go down well with some of the younger players and in the last few games, Hagan appeared far more visibly strained in the coaches box.Read the rest of this article Posted on 2 Sep 2008, 7:25am | 5 comments

Can Burt catch Covell?

Luke Burt trails the Sharks' Luke Covell by 15 points as he bids to rack up a well-deserved top points scorer honour. Burt led the point-scorers pack, as he did for most of last year, before his recent rib injury which has enabled Covell to race ahead. However, with Burt back in the side on the wing and in fine goal-kicking form he still stands a chance to claw back the ground against Covell in the final two rounds. Burt was a clear leader last year before injury ended his season prematurely allowing Hasem El Masri to secure another title.Posted on 26 Aug 2008, 11:33am | 4 comments

Match Review: Eels do just enough

Well it was unimpressive, sloppy and flat out ordinary but the Eels have gotten a crucial two points to put themselves a step closer to a semi-final berth with a 26 to 12 win against the Bulldogs. Brett Finch blamed the Eels lacklustre effort on the short-turn around but one can't help but think the Eels simply lapsed back into old habits and won't want to produce that kind of effort again this year. The Eels had one late change with Joel Reddy ruled out with his hamstring injury and Luke Burt returning to the side on the wing with Taulima Tautai to centre. Parra got a cheap early try when Tautai showed what he is capable of in the three-quarters, brushing off his opposite number and scoring a ridiculously easy try. However, after that Parramatta just couldn't control the ball. They turned the ball over again and again and played the Bulldogs into a bit of confidence. Suddenly the dogs started playing some nice football, particularly down Parramatta's right-hand side and they put on two tries to take a 12 to six lead. They carried that advantage into half-time and Parra fans would have been foaming at the mouth as an unlikely upset looked on the cards. The message surely would have been to keep control of the ball but the Eels again started the half with mistakes. However, a couple of replacements including captain Cayless, Matt Keating and Feleti Mateo returning to the side saw the Eels start to work their way back into the game with a couple of solid sets and and points followed with a try to Luke Burt after some nice backline movement which Burt again converted from touch. A penalty a few minutes later put the Eels back in front before the Bulldogs began to implode kicking the ball out of the full from the kick off. Given a cheap attacking opportunity Chad Robinson brushed off the defence and them steamed over to score clinching the game for Parramatta with the subsequent conversion. The Eels held the Bulldogs as they attempted to fight back but the Blue and White are just in desperate need of a classy half. Then with a minute remaining Kris Inu broke clear before flinging the ball back inside and Luke Burt delivered a clever little float pass to offer Kris Keating his first try in the NRL. Burt maintained his perfect record and the Eels secured the 26 to 12. Few Eels really stood out tonight with everyone contributing their share of ordinary touches. Taulima Tautai showed he'll be a terrific centre once he gets to settle into his favoured position and Hindmarsh again worked tirelessly racking up 50 tackles. Tony Williams was heart attack material every time he touched the ball and the Eels will welcome back Joel Reddy next week with open arms. In the end 2 points is 2 points and the Eels will now set up for their season-deciding final two matches against the Dragons and Warrors. Posted on 25 Aug 2008, 9:53am | 14 comments

Match Preview: Eels to pummel hopeless Dogs

Parramatta must be absolutely salivating over the chance to take on the out-of-form Bulldogs and really kickstart their finals charge. Normally, this is a match you would be fearful of. The Eels have a history of taking on sides too lightly and either getting knocked over or going very close to. But seriously, the Dogs have been going that badly that their coach already ran up the white flag about a month ago. At least, over Parramatta way, we only have to live with a CEO who does that. Today, the Eels get a critical opportunity to address the for and against issue. A 40 point win would likely see them leap frog the Tigers and get up around the Knights. It would also put them without shouting range of the Dragons who they still have to play. The Eels will be aiming for that seventh spot on the ladder and a semi-final against arch rivals Manly and a big win here will help immeasurably. This is a great opportunity for Parramatta to hone their attacking and defensive structures and play a couple more folk into form. Its also a great chance to continue to put our Blue and White friends through even more agony. What will be interesting though is to see if Parramatta can play with enough patience to rack up that big score. They still need to do the tough story and build a platform before they start throwing the ball around with too much gay abandon. It hasn't been something we've always done in the past in these kinds of matches. Eels by plenty.Posted on 23 Aug 2008, 10:36pm | 3 comments

Mateo just a cork

Michael Hagan has confirmed that Feleti Mateo has not suffered ligament damage and the knee injury is just a cork. "He's ok, he put a bit of a scare in the camp but it's just a cork in the knee." "I was quite relieved," Hagan admitted. Parramatta's other injury concern is Joel Reddy who has suffered a slight hamstring strain that saw him leave the field and not return in the first half of the match. Hagan said the Eels would need to wait to see how the injury pulled up tomorrow before knowing if Reddy would miss any football.Posted on 19 Aug 2008, 11:30am | 0 comments

Eels demolish Tigers again

Parramatta started CPR tonight on their faltering season by putting in what was easily their best performance of the year to record an impressive 40 to 12 win against the Tigers. However, the Eels will have a worrying wait on the result of an examination of Feleti Mateo's knee with the brilliant lock taken from the field with another knee injury in the final 60 seconds. Mateo was back to his best, Jarryd Hayne was simply brilliant tonight from the back and Taulima Tautai answered his critics but the Eels were great across the park tonight with good line speed and aggressive defence, hard-running and creative attack. Parramatta started well and then simply went on with it. Hayne and Joel Reddy both did superbly to keep the ball alive and then Taulima Tautai did brilliantly to brush off his opposite number and score in the corner. Inu couldn't convert but the Eels were off to a great start at four to nil. The second try came as a result of Fuifui Moimoi running off the shoulder of Feleti Mateo with Benji Marshall no hope of stopping the rampaging Eels front rower. A conversion from Inu and then a penalty goal put the Blue and Gold up 12 to nil. Parramatta stretched the lead to 18 when Jarryd Hayne leapt for a Brett Finch kick, with the ball bouncing back to Nathan Hindmarsh who dummied and dived over to score. The Eels then got a try almost identical to their first one with Jarryd Hayne offloading a great flick pass and Tautai swatting aside Marshall defending on the wing to touch down. Inu couldn't kick that one but the Eels were now up 22 to nil. Parramatta looked like they were going to go in again until a freak play suddenly gave the Tigers a slight sniff. Brett Finch put up a bomb which was grabbed by the wind and blown backward. It then took a big bounce backward to the Eels sideline and Tony Williams panicked and just tried to flick the ball back into the field of play. However, no team mate was anywhere near the ball and instead Benji Marshall picked up the pill and raced 60 metres to score. The two sides therefore went into the break at 22 to six and the Tigers would have been thinking if they scored first they would be back in the match. They did that when Todd Lowrie make a shocking attempt to field a kick from Farah and the ball landed into the arms of Chris Heighington who scored under the posts. Hodgson kicked the goal and it was now 22 to 12 and Eels fans would have been growing nervous. However, Wests knocked on from the kickoff and then Jarryd Hayne scored a try despite the suggestion of a double movement. The video referee awarded benefit of the doubt when it appeared that four Tigers managed to somehow fall off Hayne. To cap off the night Parramatta scored two late tries. Feleti Mateo showed amazing hands to grab a touched pass from Matt Keating which travelled behind him. However, he somehow pulled the ball in and went over virtually untouched. Hayne then capped off a great night with another try running off Brett Finch and the Eels had run out handsome winners in a game they will take an enormous amount of confidence from. The injury to Mateo is a worry however the initial diagnosis is an impact injury rather than a ligament strain. Indeed, after initially looking to be in some trouble Mateo was able to walk from the field with team mates not looking too concerned over the injury.Posted on 20 Aug 2008, 9:22am | 21 comments More articles...   Blogs LATESTHOTTESTRANDOMBEST EVER Piggy's facebook Status "Busy making costume for Mad Monday" Clearly Mark doesn't hold much hope we're going to affect the... 2009 signings Broncos Gains: Israel Folau (Storm) Ben Te'o (Tigers) Lagi Setu...
