Monday 23/06/2008 LISMORE HISTORY Another chapter was written in racing history at the meeting at Lismore last Saturday (June 21). Seventeen year old apprentice Matthew Chadwick arrived at the meeting with one win from 21 rides to his credit and a 4kg claim. He finished the meeting with four winners on the five event program and his claim down to 3kgs. It is believed to be the first time a 4kg claiming apprentice has ridden that many winners on the one day. Chadwick arrived from Hong Kong earlier in the year on loan to Gold Coast trainer Mary-Ann Thexton. He was granted a licence to ride in races on May 17 but was not allowed to ride at the Gold Coast until he had ridden in 10 races at country tracks. Thexton rarely sends horses to the country so she packed Chadwick off to Brett Bellamy at Coffs Harbour. Chadwick arrived with one win, at Beaudesert, to his name. He had three rides when he arrived at Lismore on Glenarvon Boy, Horsetails and Kazak Flyer and picked up the ride on Tommy Rainbowhorse. All four won with Kazak Flyer taking the feature, the Kyogle Cup. “That was a great day,” Chadwick said. “I rang my parents in Hong Kong and they were really excited for me but wanted to know where Kyogle was.” Chadwick is of Chinese origin and was given up for adoption at three months of age when his natural parents could not afford to keep him because their family was too large. He was adopted by an English couple living in Hong Kong, both school teachers. “Mum teaches while Dad is a headmaster,” Chadwick said. “I was doing well at school but we used to ride as a family and I loved it. “Hong Kong Jockey Club advertised for apprentices so I applied and was accepted. “Mum and Dad said if that was what I wanted to do they would support me.” Chadwick rode track work before being sent to Australia for the next stage of his education. He will be remaining with Bellamy until after the Coffs Harbour carnival then will return to Thexton but is due back in Hong Kong after Christmas where he will link with trainer Tony Cruz, the man who trained Silent Witness.  Monday 07/03/2008 SOUTHERN CROSS UNIVERSITY RACE DAY Saturday 3rd May at the Lismore Racecourse featuring the $5000 Southern Cross University Cup. Fashions on the Field Novelty events with great prizes Live Band Student / Staff packages presold at $10 available from The Uni Bar Gates open 11.30am with local racing from 1.00pm. Adults $6, Pensioners $4 and children Under 18 FREE. One of the most eagerly anticipated racedays of the year is on Saturday 3rd May. With the support of the management of the Southern Cross University, more than 1000 students and staff will descend onto Lismore Racecourse for an afternoon of fun, fashion and frivolity. On the racetrack the day will be highlighted by the $5,000 Southern Cross University Cup. Off the track the attractions will include Fashions On The Field, Novelty Games, a live band and much more. Tuesday 04/03/2008 STABLES TO LEASE - LISMORE RACE COURSE The Lismore Turf Club is inviting expressions of interest from licensed trainers to lease stables located on the racecourse grounds. A total of 4 secure stable complexes are available, each with the capacity to house a maximum of 6 horses. Each complex also has a minimum of 1 feed / gear room plus 2 day yards. The complexes have been configured so that the opportunity exists for a trainer to lease more than one block and have easy access to all boxes leased. Click here to find out more... Thursday 28/02/2008 LATEST RACING STORIES A major renovation of the stabling complex at Lismore race course is only weeks away from completion. Trainers had to move out while the roof was replaced and the stables divided in to four blocks of six boxes each. Each block, which will have two days yards, will be secured with its own fencing. New lease agreements are being drawn up with no guarantee existing trainers will automatically be offered a block. “They will be invited to apply but we are also interested in hearing from other trainers who might be looking for secure stables in a quiet environment with good training facilities,” the club’s secretary-manager, Michael Timbrell, said. “Any trainer interested in a lease must take a block of six boxes.” Changes have been made to the racing schedule at Lismore. The non TAB meeting scheduled for February 16 has been moved to June 21 while the non TAB meeting originally set down for Saturday, March 1 has been moved back a day to this Sunday, March 2 and becomes a TAB meeting.
