Suzanne Cazer, Calli Friesen, Elise McKamie, and Katie Schnarr each received the award for their excellence on the courts and in the classroom. The RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll recognizes student athletes who have earned a grade point average of 3.20 or better and are a starter or key reserve on their respective teams.

Cougars Wrap up Regular Season with Loss to Metro

Cougar TennisApril 21, 2008—The CCU men’s tennis team dropped a 1-8 decision, and the women lost 0-9 to the Metro State Roadrunners this past weekend in the regular season finale at the Cougar Tennis Courts in Lakewood, Colorado. Taylor Shade scored the lone victory for the men thanks to a Metro State default in #6 singles. Clint Walder and Mark Wray put on a strong showing in #2 doubles, but eventually dropped a 5-8 score to the fearsome duo of Angelino Fuastino and Ryan Campbell. Jessica Asper and Elise McKamie highlighted the action on the women’s side of things, remaining competitive in #1 doubles, before succumbing 6-8 to Metro’s Mitra Hirad and Alecia Jenkins. Both teams now gear up for the RMAC Championships which will be held next weekend in Kearney, Nebraska.

Cougars Fall to Billings and Kearney in Weekend Home Stand

Cougar TennisApril 15, 2008—A return to the friendly confines of the Cougars Tennis Courts failed to rejuvenate the men’s and women’s tennis teams, as both squads remained winless on the year, falling to Montana State-Billings and the University of Nebraska-Kearney this past weekend in Lakewood, Colorado. The men were highlighted by the strong doubles play of Clint Walder and Kevan Angel, who earned a 9-8 victory over Montana State-Billings in #1 doubles. Freshman sensation, Jessica Asper, improved to 3-9 on the season with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win over Nebraska-Kearney in #1 singles. Despite some tough matches, no other Cougars were able to steal a victory on the weekend, as the men ultimately dropped a 1-8 decision to Billings before falling 0-9 to UNK, while the women stumbled to a 0-9 loss to Billings and a 1-6 loss to Kearney. Both teams finish up the regular season on Friday April 18, with a home match versus the Roadrunners of Metro State College.

Cougars Swept in Tough Trip to Grand Junction

Cougar TennisApril 8, 2008—The CCU men’s and women’s tennis teams dropped all of their contests this past weekend, falling to Mesa State, CSU-Pueblo, Western New Mexico and Bethany College. The women added a late game against the College of Idaho which they also lost 0-9. Mark Carillo and Andrew Wren posted a win over CSU-Pueblo in #2 doubles, while Cole Johnson and Kevan Angel racked up victories in singles play. Clint Walder and Angel also logged a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Western New Mexico in #1 singles. On the women’s side, Ashley Sonnenberg and Suzanne Cazer earned an 8-5 win over Western New Mexico in #3 doubles. Cazer kept the momentum going, posting a 6-0, 6-1 win in #6 singles. Jessica Asper improved to 2-8 on the year by taking a three game set (3-6, 6-3, 10-7) in #1 singles versus Bethany College. The Cougars are now set to face Montana State-Billings this Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at the Cougar Tennis Courts in Lakewood, Colorado.

Tennis Falls to Both Emporia and Truman State over Weekend

Cougar TennisMarch 31, 2008—The CCU men’s and women’s tennis teams each dropped 0-9 decisions to Emporia State and Truman State this past weekend in non-conference action at the Tiger Tennis Courts in Hays, Kansas. Andy Richardson logged the best performance of the weekend, recovering from a 4-6 loss to a feisty Cody Pusateri of Truman State with a convincing 6-0 victory in the second game. Game three belonged to Pusateri however, as Richardson found himself on the wrong end of a 10-4 loss that proved to be CCU’s best shot a win against some tough competition. The women’s struggles continued, as Suzanne Cazer put up the toughest resistance in #6 singles action. Cazer came out on fire, but was ultimately unable to hang with Kirsten Ford of Emporia State, falling 6-3 and 6-2 in the final day of action. The Cougars are back on the courts this Friday when they battle the Mesa State Mavericks in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Cougar TennisMarch 24, 2008—The Portland State men’s and women’s tennis teams dropped CCU to 0-2 in spring play, as the men won a 9-0 victory and the women scored an 8-1 defeat over the Cougars this past Saturday in Lakewood, Colorado. Clint Walder and Kevan Angel dropped a heartbreaking 8-5 decision in #1 doubles action, while Angel put on the strongest showing in singles, falling 6-4 and 7-5 in the #4 spot to a determined Adam Blackner of Portland State. On the women’s side, Jessica Asper looked strong in #1 singles, but ultimately submitted a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Portland’s top-ranked Lacy Pflibsen. Suzanne Cazer was able to notch a win in #6 singles, as PSU’s Caitlin Stocking was forced to withdraw due to an injury. Each team is back in action this next weekend, as the men battle Truman State and Emporia State on Saturday, and the women take on Fort Hays State on Friday. Each of this weekend’s games will take place in Hays, Kansas.

Men and Women Fall in Season Opener at Colorado College

Cougar TennisMarch 10, 2008—The CCU men dropped a 7-2 decision and the women fell 0-9 in the spring opener at Colorado College this weekend in Colorado Springs. Clint Walder scored a 7-6, 6-4 win in #1 singles, while Andy Richardson defeated Nick Kreczko 6-1, and 6-1 in #3 singles. The women were unable to get a win on the board in the 0-9 loss, as Jessica Asper fell 6-3, 6-2 in #1 singles, while Ashley Sonnenberg and Calli Friesen put on a strong show before falling 8-6 in #2 doubles. The Cougars are back in action on March 21, when they host Portland State at 1:00 p.m.

2008 Spring Season Preview

Kevan AngelThe CCU men’s and women’s tennis teams gear up for the 2008 spring season with plenty of enthusiasm. Backed by one of the deepest and most talented rosters in years, the Cougars hope to string together some early season victories while building confidence and momentum heading into conference play. The men have added four talented newcomers to the lineup, and are returning five of last season’s top competitors - led by #1 singles player Clint Walder, and #2 singles Kevan Angel. Fabulous freshman Andy Richardson is coming off a 2-2 singles record in the fall season and rounds out an incredibly potent roster that is guaranteed to turn some heads in RMAC competition. On the women’s side of the action, an unprecedented six returning players is a cause for celebration on a team that made incredible headway one short year ago. Jessica AsperWatch for freshman phenom Jessica Asper to lead the way as the Cougars #1 singles player. A strong combination of skill and athleticism, Asper teamed with senior captain Elise McKamie to march to an impressive 3-2 record in doubles play this past fall. All in all, the women’s roster is shaping up to be every bit as stout as the men’s, and both teams believe that the pieces are in place for a breakthrough year that will once again put Cougar Tennis in the regional and national spotlight.

Cazer leads Cougars versus Colorado College

Suzanne CazerApril 23, 2007—Suzanne Cazer led a trio of Cougars who put on a strong showing Monday afternoon in a re-scheduled bout with Colorado College. The Tigers’ Anh Lai was no match for the surging Suzanne Cazer, who clobbered Lai in 3 matches. Cazer went to work early, dismissing Lai 6-1 in the first match, before falling 2-6 in the second. With all eyes glued to the decisive game three, Suzanne buckled down and summarily ended the series with an electrifying 11-9 decision. With one win under their belt and all the momentum favoring the Cougars, only rain could stand in the way of two more wins. As Calli Friesen and Ashley Sonnenberg were each marching toward certain victory, the contest was called due to a heavy downpour. The contest officially ended the 2006-07 season for the Cougar men and women, who made large strides toward the end of the year and with a little momentum heading into the off-season, have their sights set on a breakthrough 2007-08 campaign.

Early Exit for Cougars at RMAC Championships

Kevan AngelApril 21, 2007—Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams faced a first round heartbreak Saturday afternoon to regional powerhouse Western New Mexico at the RMAC Championships in Pueblo, Colorado. Entering the contest as the conference #6 seed the Cougars had an uphill battle ahead of them trying to advance past the #3 ranked Mustangs. Unfortunately, it was all WNMU all the time, as the Mustangs cruised to a decisive 9-0 win in each competition. Kevan Angel continued his strong play for the Cougars, putting on a strong show before falling 6-3 and 6-2 to Rafael Caty. Melissa Ruiz highlighted the CCU lineup in singles action, battling hard before falling 6-4 to Izelle Oliver.

Thunderwolves Too Much for Cougars

Nathan WoodringApril 15, 2007—The CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves kept the Cougar men’s and women’s tennis teams winless Saturday afternoon, downing both squads 9-0 in RMAC action. Nate Woodring and Taylor Shade continued to impress for the Cougars in #2 doubles action, displaying their strong tennis background with a wide variety of athletic and skillful maneuvers in an 8-4 loss to the RMAC powerhouse duo known only as Joyce and Eades. Kevan Angel took Ricardo Oaxala to the wire in what was arguably the afternoon’s most entertaining match, before falling 6-4, 6-4 in a thrilling display of singles action. Elise McKamie looked solid for the women, tallying a total of 5 points in two matches in her 6-2, 6-3 defeat to the always impressive Jamie Raun. You can throw the regular season record books out the door this next weekend, as the Cougars gear up for the RMAC Championship tournament on April 20th in Pueblo, Colorado.

Sonnenberg Sizzles despite Cougar Loss at Metro

Ashley SonnenbergApril 9, 2007—CCU sophomore Ashley Sonnenberg looked unstoppable at times, refusing to lose and eventually upending Metro’s Katie Reitz in a 9-7 barnburner Monday afternoon at the Auraria tennis courts. Sonnenberg proved to be the lone highlight for the Cougars, as the men fell 0-9, and the women dropped a heartbreaking 1-8 decision. Coming off her first win this past Saturday, Elise McKamie was unable to recapture the magic, suffering a 6-2, 7-6 setback against the Roadrunners. The men take the court once again this Thursday versus Sonoma State at 1:00 p.m. and the women travel to Colorado College on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. showdown.

McKamie Leads Cougars in Weekend Loss

Elise McKamieApril 8, 2007—Cougar sophomore Elise McKamie racked up her first win of the season with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Western New Mexico’s Tereza Pilatova Saturday afternoon at the Cougar tennis courts. The victory highlighted a tough weekend for both the men’s and women’s tennis team’s who fell 0-9 to Nebraska-Kearney, before dropping the 1-8 decision to the Western New Mexico Mustangs. McKamie’s victory ended the 2007 winless streak for the Cougars and also punctuated a strong Saturday for CCU, who challenged the Mustangs in both singles and doubles play. On the men’s side of the action, Nate Woodring and Taylor Shade came just short of their first doubles win of the year, battling fiercely before falling 8-4 to WNMU’s Renato Varella and Michael Ludi. CCU’s Calli Friesen nearly notched the women’s second upset of the afternoon, wowing fans with her unmatched athleticism and finely tuned skill, before letting the Mustang’s Stephanie Alarcon escape with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. With a little momentum under their belts, the Cougars now gear up for a trip to Metro State. Opening serve is slated for April 11th at 2:00 p.m.

Hawaii-Hilo Overpowers Men’s Tennis

Ryan MacleodApril 3, 2007—The Hawaii-Hilo men’s tennis team kept the Cougars winless this past weekend, by downing CCU 0-3 in doubles and 0-9 in singles competition. Kevan Angel and Ryan Macleod were defeated in doubles play by Hilo’s strong combo of Mitchell Gelina and Ross Sugiyanna. The Cougar luck did not improve on the singles side of action as Angel, Macleod and Nathan Woodring were each vanquished from competition as the men fell to 0-4 on the year. Next up for the Cougars is a 2:00 p.m. date with Nebraska-Kearney on April 6th at the Cougar Tennis Courts.
