The conference tournament brings the University to several major cities from Atlanta (Emory), to Cleveland (Case Western) to St. Louis (Washington U.) where they compete against Nationally ranked teams and players. The women's team has traditionally finished in the top half of this conference. The remainder of the fall and spring schedule contains schools from New England, another hot bed of Division III tennis. The team always competes in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT), the oldest and largest women's tournament in the country. The Brandeis women will look to bounce back in 2006-07 after a tough end to their 2005-06 campaign. The Judges had an outstanding fifth-place finish at the NEWITT championships, bolstered by Colleen Donnelly's '08 runner-up finish in the No. 2 singles flight, but injuries slowed the squad in the spring season and at the UAA championships. The Judges will look to get their younger members some experience in the fall season as they anticipate Donnelly's return from a semester abroad. Junior Ana Katz, a first-team All-UAA performer at No. 3 singles will take up the No. 1 slot in the fall season. The Brandeis women’s tennis program has a goal of being a top 15 team in the nation and being selected for the NCAA team tournament. We work diligently as the season progresses with our in season and our off-season workout regimen. The tennis year consists of a Fall (Sept. 1-Mid Oct.) season and a Spring (Feb. 1-late April) season, with post-season play in May. The Fall competition is based around two individual tournaments and dual matches against New England competition. The Spring season is more focused on regional dual matches, culminating in the UAA and NCAA Championships. With 12 outdoor and three indoor courts, the Judges practice all year round. We stress short but focused practices during the season, while captain's practices continue the work out of season. A typical practice usually lasts 2 hours, including a half hour of off court work, including pliometrics, weights, short sprints and hill training. Lamanna came to the Judges after spending the 2004-05 season as an assistant coach at his alma mater under head coach Paul Gastonguay. The Bates men posted an 11-5 record and reached the NCAA tournament for the fifth year in a row that season, setting a school record in the process. The Bobcats also produced the runner-up in the 2005 NCAA Division III singles tournament. The Bates women went 7-8 in 2004-05. Most recently, Lamanna also worked as a teaching pro at Far Neck Golf Club on Martha's Vineyard.
