The initialtrack was a 1/3 mile clay oval. The familiar names of the oldspeedway continued to dominate the top of the standings as somenew names krept into the line-ups that would forever change theface of local racing. While sprint cars were becoming the bigthing at Baylands, Supermodifieds that were purpose built for thedirt began to surface and by 1981 the pavement buggies wereB-Main material.  RogerBailey in the #2 Supermodified in this shot from 1981. Tom Henry's rookie season wasnt too bad. He becameone of our favorites and the car was really great looking in thebright red and yellow paint scheme. Here he runs off of turn 4during qualifying.  Nick Rescino takes the checkers during a qualifyingrun... In this pick, Mike Sargent hammers downoff of turn 2. In the background you can see the inside rail fromthe 1/2 mile track that ran the WoO events. John Viel showed up after West Capitols demise and became aregular for years. The big wing and rearview mirror were histrademark. Scott Murray was a rookie this year too and his LosGatos Body Shop\California Karts Super was always competitive. Mike Sargents blue #7 continues another run in theWillard Radiator Special that began with the 1977 championshipand went on to bag more at the fairgrounds race fans halvebeen admitted Last update: 12-26-99Page 2 |
