Both teams were already assured of qualification for the semi-finals, but both teams knew that the winners of the game would face hosts Vietnam in the semi-finals, while the losing team would face Singapore who were perceived to be easier opposition and avoid the fuss of moving training bases from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi for the semi-final. The first half saw little action, with both teams barely making an attempt to score. During the second half both teams managed to score, partly thanks to half-hearted defending, resulting in a 2-2 scoreline after 90 minutes. Then, during injury time, Indonesian defender Mursyid Effendi deliberately kicked the ball into his own goal, despite the Thai's attempts to stop him doing so, thus handing Thailand a 3-2 victory. Both teams were fined for "violating the spirit of the game" and Mursyid Effendi was banned from football for life.In the semi-finals, Thailand lost to Vietnam, and Indonesia also lost to Singapore. In the final, the title was to elude the hosts as they went down 1-0 to unfancied Singapore in one of the competition's biggest shocks to date.[edit] SEA Games record(Under-23 Team Since 2001)SEA GamesYearRoundGPWDLGFGA 1959Runner Up------ 1961Third Place------ 1965Champions------ 1967Third Place------ 1969Runner Up------ 1971Third Place------ 1973Round 1------ 1975Champions------ 1977Runner Up------ 1979Third Place------ 1981Champions------ 1983Champions------ 1985Champions4310171 1987Third Place421173 1989Semi-Finals412153 1991Runner Up4211102 1993Champions6600186 1995Champions6510192 1997Champions6420153 1999Champions6510241 2001Champions6600142 2003Champions5410202 2005Champions5500102 2007Champions5500183TotalBest: Champions614810317730[edit] Other HonoursKing's Cup: (1976, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1994, 20002006, 2007)3 Nations in Taiwan: (1971)4 Nations Indo-China (Bangkok): (1989)Independence Cup (Indonesia): (1994)Brunei Games (1990)[edit] Top goalscorersAs of July 17, 2008PosPlayerGoalsTenure1Piyapong Piew-on1031981-19972Kiatisuk Senamuang651993-20073Niwat Srisawat551967-19794Jedsada Na Phatthalung421971-19815Vithoon Kijmongkolsak321985-19956Worrawoot Srimaka291996-19997Daoyod Dara281975-19868Sarayoot Chaikamdee262003-present9Suttha Sudsa-ard251978-unknown9Chalor Hongkajorn1979-19879Netipong Srithong-In1995-19979Therdsak Chaiman1997-200710Prapol Tantiyanon231971-unknown* The players in bold typeface are still active in football.[edit] Current squadLast Updated - 22nd June 2008 The following players were called up for the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification (against Oman on June 22, 2008).NoNameDate of Birth (Age)ClubCaps (goals)Goalkeepers1Sivaruck TedsungnoenApril 20, 1984 (1984-04-20) (age 24) BEC Tero Sasana4 (0)18Kosin HathairattanakoolMarch 23, 1982 (1982-03-23) (age 26) Chonburi31 (0)Defenders2Suttinan Phuk-homNovember 29, 1987 (1987-11-29) (age 20) Chonburi1 (0)3Natthaphong SamanaJune 29, 1984 (1984-06-29) (age 24) Chonburi11 (1)4Jetsada JitsawadAugust 5, 1980 (1980-08-05) (age 28) Thailand Tobacco Monopoly28 (0)5Prat SamakratOctober 31, 1985 (1985-10-31) (age 22) BEC Tero Sasana2 (1)6Nattaporn PhanritJanuary 11, 1982 (1982-01-11) (age 26) Chonburi25 (2)12Niweat SiriwongJuly 18, 1977 (1977-07-18) (age 31) BEC Tero Sasana84 (3)16Kiatprawut SaiwaeoJanuary 24, 1986 (1986-01-24) (age 22) Manchester City9 (1)Midfielders7Arthit SunthornpitApril 19, 1984 (1984-04-19) (age 24) Chonburi1 (0)8Chaiwut WattanaJuly 14, 1981 (1981-07-14) (age 27) TOT5 (0)10Tawan Sripan (c)December 13, 1971 (1971-12-13) (age 36) BEC Tero Sasana140 (20)14Tana ChanabutJune 6, 1984 (1984-06-06) (age 24) Coke-Bangpra8 (2)15Pichitphong ChoeichiuAugust 28, 1982 (1982-08-28) (age 26) Krung Thai Bank21 (2)Strikers9Sarayoot ChaikamdeeSeptember 24, 1981 (1981-09-24) (age 26) Krung Thai Bank35 (26)11Teerasil DangdaJune 6, 1988 (1988-06-06) (age 20) Manchester City12 (5)13Anon SangsanoiJanuary 3, 1984 (1984-01-03) (age 24) BEC Tero Sasana3 (1)17Sutee SuksomkitJune 5, 1978 (1978-06-05) (age 30) Tampines Rovers52 (12)[edit] Recent callupsNameDate of Birth (Age)ClubCaps (goals)Most recent callupGoalkeepersNarit TaweekulOctober 30, 1983 (1983-10-30) (age 24) Thailand Tobacco Monopoly3 (0)v.
